Holly Water was designed and built by @outofthevalley_ltd as a self-sufficient retreat in the heart of Devon, UK. The exterior is dominated by its single pitch roof with a generous overhang. Itâs on a Douglas fir frame that sites above the ground on cast piers that were dug during the wetter months of winter, so the builders battled the sticky clay to get them set in time. A land rover or tractor was the only way of getting to site early on in the build, so when spring came and the ground dried the build team was relieved. The exterior is clad in local Cedar sourced from a mill near the buildersâ workshop, plant based insulations were used throughout and to maintain a breathable building envelope they used a natural clay plaster internally. Clay helps to regulate humidity and temperature. The interior is open plan, an Oak kitchen occupies the back wall with a double bed and bathroom tucked into the gable elevation. The sliding doors open to reveal a cornerless cantilever and an outdoor deck with a bath.

Nick Sheehyâs âHollowsâ at Arch Enemy Arts.
Opening tonight at Arch Enemy Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is artist Nick Sheehyâs solo exhibition, âHollows.â
âHollows,â created entirely while in lockdown from the COVID19 pandemic, highlights the expected bizarro scene stills and typical misfit characters Sheehyâs known for, however these new pieces highlight a different side of his work and what the artist says was an attempt to keep things more âpainterly and atmosphericâ. Despite the overall dark palette and tone of this collection, titles like âEverything is OKâ and âV Signâ show a real effort to keep things positive through the experience of months of isolation and the emotional heaviness that inevitably went along with it.
The artist writes, âWhat started as an exploration towards a richer and darker atmosphere, ultimately turned into a series of scenes taking place in a cave-like world where various familiar and not-so-familiar characters evade, snare, hunt, and hoard. Tripping over littered fossils and stumbling past forgotten totems with forgotten meanings, our cave dwellers emerge from the shadows, and take a step into the light.â

Ermsyâs âTook It Easyâ at Thinkspace Projects.
Currently virtually on view at Thinkspace Projects in Los Angeles, California is artist Ermsyâs solo exhibition, âTook It Easy.â
Fascinated by American pop culture as a readily accessible, visual vernacular, Ermsyâs take on its beloved illustrated characters is both satirical and participatory. These adult-themed bastardizations of Garfield, Loony Tunes, The Simpsons, and the like, are simultaneously elated and anarchic in their absurd display of debauchery like tendencies. Using familiar characters provides Ermsy with a set of pre-established imaginative boundaries within which to work. Like a hot-boxed descent into an alternate universe of nostalgic psychotropic Saturday morning cartoons, his world is a playful subversion of familiar, pop cultural fodder.Â
âI love pop culture,â Ermsy explains, âand I love exploring it.â His graphic exploration of pop culture uses popular cartoons in the same way that graffiti writers use letters. âUsing well-known characters provides me with a base point, a frame to work within,â he explains. âWith graffiti, the idea is to pick some letters from the alphabet, then go crazy with them or do whatever you want. Everybody starts with the same base point, and thatâs graffiti. My starting point is to use characters in my artwork.â
