“Waves of Loneliness” by Sergio Hernandez

A girl of unknown age is laying on a bed with flowers in her hand. We can’t see her face but by the curled up laying I would assume that she is in a sad mood. Her hand holding onto her arm also implies to me that she is in a weak state whether that be physically or mentally. I also sense some loneliness because of the empty space around her on the bed. The color black is often paired with the idea of loss so this could imply a death of someone close to her because she has the flowers that she could be bringing to a funeral.  She is holding the flowers lightly and facing down like she doesn’t want face her reality.

“A World Plagued by Waste” by Ryan Deno, May 2022

The young girl in the photo is holding up a crushed soda can with a grab tool. The girl has a disturbed and disappointed look on her face which makes you wonder why she feels this way. Perhaps she is an environmentalist or someone who goes on hikes and enjoys nature since she is wearing clothes that would be worn for going on a run. The very fact that she has a grab tool with her must mean she is out there for the reason of picking up trash. It seems like this is taking place in a forest because of the large amount of trees. Also this seems to be a place for picnics because we can see benches in the background. One can assume the soda can was found next to one of these tables probably left by someone having a meal in the woods.

“Peaceful Princess” by Ryan Deno, May 2022

I was attempting to give her a royal but rebellious personality. Although she is wearing a dress which is by nature formal, it is covered by a range of colors which could be interpreted as an attempt to counter formality. She has a relaxed and tranquil expression on her face. She looks as though she comes to this place to get away from the formal and uptight life she is forced to live. I think it is believable because the expression on her face looks natural and the location fits the persona she is given.

“Warrior” by Ryan Deno, April 2022

The main subject is a young girl with a flowing, patterned, maroon scarf draped around her head. She has serious and focused expression on her face like she is ready for anything that comes at her. The scarf flows in the breeze giving a heroic feeling to the scene. This picture was really improvised in the second that it happened. She had the scarf completely wrapped around her head and it slipped off. She was about to fix it and I quickly told her not to. I ended up making her look like a warrior ready to fight or go on an adventure. It gives off a vibe similar to the movie Dune. The flowing scarf really made this photo come alive.

This is my sister Cassidy. I decided to photograph her because she is someone i’m very familiar with and she is always accessible to take pictures. Also after taking these photos I have found that she is a really good actress who is able to take on a variety of personalities. I composed the picture in a way that the light would highlight her face in profile. The light and her facial expression give the photo a mysterious tone.

“Rocks of the Woodland” by Ryan Deno, April 2022

I was walking around the forest and came across a log that was laying on the path I was on. The log was elevated and I saw a rocks scattered across the ground around it. I decided to start stacking the rocks to make a nice little arch. I wanted to make the arch imperfect so I used different sized rocks. By creating this structure it gave the photo a subject when there wouldn't have been before. The structure also makes the scene more interesting and kind of mysterious.

“Cloud Gazing” by Ryan Deno, April 2022

I created this panorama by taking 5 photos. After each photo I moved a couple of steps to the right. I made sure to stay at the same camera level and did not change any of the exposure settings. After taking the photos I edited it in Lightroom. In Lightroom I selected the 5 photos and merged them together to form the panorama. I had the photo auto crop since it wasn't completely straight and had blank space around it.

“The Prickly Prairie” by Ryan Deno, March 2022

The subjects are three prickly Cut-leaf Teasels. These prickly plants are coned shaped at the very end. The cones are sharp in texture and spikes protrude from the middle of the cones. Directly underneath the cones are spikes that jut out and look like they are holding and protecting it. The stems of the teasels are lined with sharp thorn-like bumps. Behind the main subject the landscape is blurred but you can see that there is a pack of these plants that populate the prairie. Some of these background plants are so tall that they are in line with the sky really giving them a surface to pop out on. The sky is a warm blue with mist like clouds. The clouds are the type of clouds that are not really in form but streak along the sky like the contrails created from a plane. There is a golden light that is shone on the plants that really make them gleam with energy. This beautiful light really gives the plants the look of pure happiness and joy. If it had been earlier in the day the scene would have looked a lot more harsh and dry but with the sun going down it makes the scene look warm and cozy.

“The Afternoon Moon” by Ryan Deno, March 2022

I discovered Tampier Lake in Illinois by searching through Google Maps for an area to take photos. I wanted to go somewhere where I had never been before. I hopped in the car and started scouting the area to find the best places to shoot. While walking around I came across this group of trees that lined up perfectly with the moon in the sky. Two large trees on the side and a small one in the middle next to the lake. In front of them, two other small trees lined up in front of the large ones. The tips of the top branches of the large trees have red stems that are highlighted in front of the cerulean blue sky. Since the sky has this vibrant shade of blue it allowed for the moon to be seen extremely clearly. The moon adds a focal point that your eyes wander up to on what would otherwise be a pretty vanilla photo. The lake’s reflection helps give the middle of the photo a variety of colors and textures. It was around 5 pm so the sun was about an hour away from setting and I was able to get some of that nice golden brown light. It was a very clear day so if I had shot this earlier in the day the light would not have looked as good since the light would have caused a sun bleach color on the ground and trees.

“Isolation” by Ryan Deno, March 2022

Immediately in the foreground you are met with a tiny barren tree. The baby tree is isolated by itself with no other wooded objects directly around it. There are long straws of grass directly behind the tree surrounding it that look to be flowing in the wind. The ground around the tree looks dead and dry from the winter. The dark line of the ground moves your attention away from the foreground and to the right where there are a couple trees which are equally as barren. In the mid-ground there is a dark and dense line of straw grass that separates the front of the prairie from the back of it. The background field has a much more vibrant and alive orange compared to the front. The horizon is a little above the middle and is defined by a dark line of trees. The ghastly sky is very moody and gives off an uneasy vibe. The clouds are very defined in front of the mildly blue sky. It almost feels like the weather that would be present before a tornado occurs.

“Swig on the Snow Covered Sea” by Ryan Deno, February 2022

One thing I did to make this ordinary object creative is I got it dirty and placed it in a really empty space. By making it dirty and using a shallow depth of field it made this regular bottle look much more interesting. I learned that placement, light, and shadows are key in making a picture interesting.

“Feed Your Brain” by Ryan Deno, February 2022

There is a powdery lavender chalk that spells out “Feed your Brain” on top of the metal cover that pops out next to the clear glass bottle. Also on the metal cover there are splatters of green, orange, pink and blue chalk that are scattered throughout. The metal cover looks smooth but feels grainy because of the chalk. The foundation rock that the cover is laid on has a very rough and rocky texture. On the rock foundation there is a little bit of red spray paint. Underneath the rock foundation there are shards of rock and leaves. On the right side of the photo you can see the chains links that are used to keep the cover on. At the very bottom of the picture you see the

“Wedge in the Edge” by Ryan Deno, February 2022

I used F5.6 to make to make the background out of focus so the ice-wedge and sewer were the main subjects. Also, I increased the shutter speed by a lot to underexpose to give the photo a gritty look. I wanted the texture of the ice shard pieces to be in focus as well so I made sure to have my camera focus on that point. This simple ice shard and sewer look mystifying with the dark theme

“Sewer Slogging” by Ryan Deno, February 2022

I was assigned to take photos with a sewer as the subject. I found that it was very difficult to make an ordinary thing such as a sewer really interesting. However after going through some trial and error I found some this that worked. In this picture in particular I used shapes to really tie the composition together. The boot is used as a an object to not only get your attention but it also creates some shapes of its own by cutting off the yellow line and making a triangle. The boot also gives some contrast to the sewer underneath it. The reflection of water inside the sewer also gives the picture another level of detail and depth.

Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico by Ansel Adams, 1941

The title is Moonrise, Hernandez because it was taken in the  town of Hernandez, New Mexico and it was taken just before sunset. You can clearly see the moon rising in the background. I think the photo’s purpose was to show the glow of the moon shine onto the town in the foreground. Also I think it was about the overall look of the landscape with the moon rising over the mountains. What made this photo famous was the amazing job Adams’ did at developing the photo to make the picture have the prefect look. Also the entire composition of the photo to get the town, mountains, and moon in was phenomenal.
