If you really want to secure truth about the natural world, forget tradition, ignore authority, be skeptical of what others say, and wander the fields alone with your eyes open

my pooch en route to a hike (by wardenclyfe)
A man walking across a field encounters a tiger. He fled, the tiger chasing after him. Coming to a cliff, he caught hold of a wild vine and swung himself over the edge. The tiger sniffed at him from above. Terrified, the man looked down to where, far below, another tiger had come, waiting to eat him. Two mice, one white and one black, little by little began to gnaw away at the vine. The man saw a luscious strawberry near him. Grasping the vine in one hand, he plucked the strawberry with the other. How sweet it tasted!

(27 Feb 2004) A February Head of the Charles? This winter's frigid temperatures hold their own against the winter of 1977. Along the eastern seaboard, the record-breaking mercury drop forced school and business closures (Wheeling Jesuit University in West Virginia suspended classes for a month); a blizzard hit Buffalo, N.Y., with thunder, lightning, snow, and 69-mph wind gusts resulting in drifts so high that plow blades broke trying to clear them. But such chilled-to-the-bone conditions didn't stop former gold-medal Olympian and crew coach Hugh Foley from testing the mettle of his 16-member crew team at a mock practice on a frozen Charles River. Boston Globe photographer Joseph Dennehy snapped the picture, which was later shown on national news outlets. Photo courtesy of the Boston Globe (source)
...I was a Flower of the mountain yes when I put the rose in my hair like the Andalusian girls used or shall I wear a red yes and how he kissed me under the Moorish wall and I thought well as well him as another and then I asked him with my eyes to ask again yes and then he asked me would I yes to say yes my mountain flower and first I put my arms around him yes and drew him down to me so he could feel my breasts all perfume yes and his heart was going like mad and yes I said yes I will Yes.

"I met a solid rowing friend and asked about the Race. How fared it with the wind," I said, "When stroke increased the pace? You swung it forward mightily, you heaved it greatly back. Your muscles rose in knotted lumps, I almost heard the crack. And while we roared and rattled too, your eyes were fixed like glue. What went flying through your mind, how fared it, Five, with you?" But Five made answer solemnly, "I heard them fire a gun, No other mortal thing I heard until the Race was done."
