This piece was made for a local art show revolving around the inspiration of the European graffiti artist, Banksy.
The idea for my art actually came several years ago. I’ve always had an idea where I wanted to make an art subject where it had two censor bars: one would be on the face promoting anonymity, while the other censor bar would be somewhere else hiding an object or action. It seemed like having a censor bar over the genitals would make it work. Of course I wanted to add more shock to the audience, so I added some blood around the area. I thought it would also be interesting for the subject to have scissors in her hand to suggest self infliction. When the art show theme was announced, I felt like I finally had motivation to translate this idea into art and felt enthusiastic for the opportunity to share it with other people. I still pondered about the subject I had in mind, and I wanted to incorporate a concept that would cause more intense feeling of connection and horror toward the audience. Thus, I replaced substituted the scissor idea with a hanger instead.
I’m not going to discuss my stance on the subject of abortion. I’m just here to share my art idea. However the audience views, reacts, and interpret the art is up to the individual. I’m just giving people a trigger.
