in the k-pop industry, two things are a very big portion of what makes a group successful; appearance and entertainment factor. it’s always been big factors in creating key successful groups, for example: the sweet and pink bubblegum pop sound and sight of snsd, the dark and hard hitting hip hop of early bts, the colorful individuality that hailed shinee trendsetters from debut, that’s been the foundation of every group out there. but this year, i feel k-pop has let entertainment take a backseat in favor of appearance, but only for girl groups. boy groups are still allowed to express themselves and perform to the best of their abilities day in and day out with a multitude of unique and eye-catching outfits, but i can’t say the same for girl groups. i started REALLY noticing it last year with red velvet, specifically during their red flavor era where in this stage, you can CLEARLY see irene is uncomfortable with the outfit given to her, to the point where she can’t dance comfortably for fear of exposing something that she doesn’t want seen. even since then, irene’s stated that she prefers pants rather than dresses and skirts, but her stylists STILL put her in skirts and dresses when she seems a lot more comfortable in pants, as seen here. and it’s not just red velvet, other girl groups have been given extremely short/uncomfortable/tight/revealing outfits to wear on stage, some without even safety shorts!!!!, and be expected to give a good performance when they don’t even feel comfortable in their own bodies to do so. such as blackpink’s jennie, momoland’s yeonwoo, twice’s momo, momoland’s nancy, clc’s seungyeon AND seunghee, honestly literally all of twice here, and as recently as twice’s chaeyoung in last week’s inkigayo (and today’s show champion) and these girl’s are aware of the way they’re being taken advantage of for wearing these outfits to perform, as seen here where several twice members wrap little blankets around their chest’s to prevent being photographed in perverted manners. it’s not just the outfits either, it’s the way that these girls are expected to perform and act cute and sweet, or whatever concept they’ve been given that era, when they have to struggle to make sure that they’re decent. because god forbid there’s an outfit slip, like here, and then there are tons of people talking about it as if it’s the worst thing in the world when it’s not their fault! in addition, we have camera operators focusing on other parts of their body that AREN’T their face in obscene manners that should also be called out, for example: red velvet’s joy, loona’s hi high (both the mv and live stages) and it’s not fair to those girls at all. it’s not like these girls can be dressed comfortably, look good and perform well, because we see it daily! we see it in groups like pristin, gugudan, red velvet (on a good day), april, loona, etc, and thankfully, many others! so it’s not like it’s impossible, if these girls are visibly uncomfortable in these outfits and even speak out about wanting things they can perform in better, why deny them that right? some girls don’t mind the revealing outfits and that’s fine (we love a confident girl!!!), but why subject everyone to that same thinking if it’s clear they don’t feel that way? if you let these girls at least have a louder say in the outfits they wear on stage i’m sure the appearance factor will skyrocket to pair with the entertainment factor and these girls will be even more successful.
i support the same opinion, it’s true all that you say.
