Why do people think it’s weird to go caroling? It’s Christmas and this is when you can go door-to-door and sing whatever song you wanna because it’s fun and feels good. Plus there’s that bit about good cheer and whatever else is in that Carol of the Bells song. 

What I’m trying to say is are you gonna come with or should I go alone ‘round the neighborhood?

Marley nodded with a small smile. “Thanks, Sam. Really it’s no big deal.” But it was such a huge deal, and Marley was a sweet girl and wanted nothing but to get along and try to fit in for once at school, but she should have known better than to set her expectations and hopes so high. Taking the shirt from Sam, she began wiping off the leftover slushie from her face, feeling terrible for using his shirt but it was such a nice gesture of him to offer it up. “It can’t be any worse than the last one I’ve had, which was a few weeks ago. I thought I was holding out for a record there for a second.” After most of the beverage was wiped off she held out the shirt wanting to give it back but also stopped in mid air realizing that his shirt was now slushied. “Umm, how about I take this home and wash it for you? The least I can do after you giving it up for me to use.”

“I mean If you wanna. Then sure. Go for it. But I got pretty good at washing these things out.” He didn’t hold his hand out because he didn’t want to take away Marley’s offer to wash it. He knew how ti was like to want to do things and then people tell him not to worry ‘bout things. “None of it got in your eyes?” These drinks stung something fierce and one time he was convinced his eye turned blue because of it. But it was only because it got stuck in his eyelashes. 

Sam reached over and did catch some which was sliding down the side of her eyebrow, wiping it on the shirt in her hands. Might as well keep using it, right? “You able to go home know or you have something happening?” He’d hate to go about his day feeling like the sticky aftermath of an ice cream fight. Which was another cold mess he didn’t want to imagine hitting his face. But it’d be more of a milkshake than getting pelted by balls of ice cream and why the hell was he still thinking about this? “No rush to get it back to me. I got plenty of plaid laying about at home.”

Friendly encounter || Tara + Sam

Tara fumed silently, her tongue pressed between her cheek and teeth. She could not believe the way he was speaking to her. She could not believe that way he was treating her. She’d done nothing wrong. She’d invited her sister over for dinner which meant James had had to fend for himself. Apparently, in his book, that was unacceptable. Fine. FINE! She didn’t want to mother him anyway. 

“Stop the car. I want out. Stop the car right now.” She hadn’t been paying attention to where they were. The only thing she cared about was the idea of getting away from this absolute asshole. Which, thankfully, he obliged allowing.

She stepped out of the car, much to the driver’s protests and slammed the door in his face. “We’re through,” she said, her words carrying over his protests and begging. She was not getting back in that car she would walk home and that would be the end of that. “Goodbye James.” Her voice was hard, no emotion beyond anger in it. His voice was pleading, begging her to get back in the car they could work it out, but no. No they couldn’t and she didn’t want to. 

She looked up when she heard someone speak. It was a voice she’d never heard before but it was a welcome change from James’ groveling. James looked over at the guy and glared before peeling out and racing off, leaving Tara standing there by herself. She turned to the blonde, her face not nearly as composed now that her ex was driving off. “Um… I don’t know. Where the hell am I?”

Whatever Sam jogged into felt heavy and he checked the woman immediately to make sure she was okay. Instinct was to go ‘round the driver side door and yank it open to pin this guy against the car until he was sure she was okay but that opportunity peeled away and left him standing in a stench of car exhaust. Sam tried not to breathe too deep and walked to the woman. “Did he try to hurt you?” This wasn’t the type of question someone asked at first meeting but this wasn’t the usual scenario one to walk into. 

Sam pointed at the sign next to the parking lot and said, “This is a high school. McKinley. Home of the Titans and the driest hash browns imaginable.” He tossed as an afterthought as it was his go-to to crack a joke if someone was upset or uncomfortable. One of those many u words which meant something was wrong. “Do you need to call someone?”

Mercedes looked up swallowing hard, she was face to face with the one man she still couldn’t get out of her mind. She had heard he was teaching but she didn’t think that she would see him like this. Her hair blew in the wind as she stood with a smile on her face. “I mean I could have but then you might have kept walking, we all know Sam Evans can always be found when there is a damsel in distress.” she teased him still in shock that she saw him. 

She looked at him and chewed her bottom lip tilting her head to the side as she handed the jack over to him. “You do remember my dad taught me how to change a tire when I was like 12 right? I can do it.” She placed her hair behind her ears shaking her head. “You look good Sam, stop.” Leaning against the car she sighed. “I meant to text you I just got into town last night and today I have been running around. I am going to be here for a while helping out the family. Tour can wait my family can’t.” She said glancing at him.

“You know my weakness and here you go poking at it,” Gosh he missed those small teases, the ones they used to dish with each other all the time when they were together. Now they were hundreds of miles apart they had to come in the form of texts and sometimes he didn’t do so good with reading the context. Except now they were more along the lines of a hundred centimeters apart, which was a helluva lot better than before. “Lets be clear about one thing. You’re no damsel. No way. But I do like bein’ able to help whenever I can.” He gave her one of his infamous, warm smiles and took hold of the jack. 

Sam dropped to his knees and set to work, not worried about a skirt threatening to ride up too high to flash the world his goods. “Yeah. I remember. But you also remember I don’t mind getting my hands a little dirty.” With a small grimace, he loosened one bolt and went to the next. He kept going around and the last one was a stubborn son of a gun which required more elbow grease than the others. “I read somethin’ about your tour getting postponed. I thought you might’ve needed a break or maybe you laying down new tracks for an album.” Finally, the sucker turned and he set everything inside the hubcap before laying on his side to find the sweet spot for the jack.

Diiiing. Finally, the last bell of the day had rung and Marley managed to shove her way past crowds. Of course that didn’t help much considering the massive amounts of people kept pushing her back, she was far too nice to say anything so when she did manage to say an ‘excuse me’ it was like almost like a small mouse had squeaked. No one heard her, and if they did no one bothered to care about her.

When Marley arrived at the cafeteria to see her mom, she shoved her off to go home and have fun. It was the weekend and Marley needed to be hanging out with her friends, but little did her mother know she hadn’t really made many plans tonight. There was a sleepover that Kitty invited her to but their friendship–if one were to really call it that–was a complicated one.

None the less she followed her mother’s orders and skipped right out of the cafeteria and out the halls of McKinley High, feeling the warm sunlight upon her face and a—flavored ice as well? “Hey nerd!” before Marley could say anything else she saw some tall jock looking guy with a cup in his hand, which was then directly thrown at her face. All the girl could do was stand there; confusion and embarrassment flushed through her entire body.

The boy had ran off and Marley swore she heard another voice in the distance, it was hard to tell but she could sort of make out a figure in front of her, The slushie was covered all over her face and clothes, it dripped down to the ground and she wiped off most of it to get a better image of who was standing before her and it was Sam Evans; great this day couldn’t get any more worse, she just got slushied and now a cute boy was standing in front of her. “I’m fine, thank you Sam.” Marley managed to say, holding back tears. “I honestly should be use to it by now, right?” She tried hard to laugh but it was hard when she was choking back tears.

He had his fair share of slushies to the face after joining the glee crew but no matter how many you got you never got used to how cold it was or the way it seemed to get everywhere. Even when he went to the gas station he’d cringe at the sight of one. Which sucked because he loved them on the rare splurge day. “You sure, Marls? This one looks pretty bad.” Sam peeled off his plaid overshirt and used it as a towel. The fabric went around his hand and he raised it, though there was initial hesitation before he lowered his hand and moved brought his other hand over to make it look like he balled up the shirt for her to use. He didn’t want to cross any lines or anything like that with her. Not when she was still a student and he helping Mr. Schue with running things while he took on responsibilities with other clubs. “Here you go. It’s not a towel but it oughtta work ‘bout the same.”

This day just wouldn’t end, Mercedes had spent most of her day in running around trying to set everything up for her niece to start school in the new year and this was the only time she had. Her sister was in no position to take care of her teenage daughter and Mercedes stepped up like she always did. So she took some much needed time off from touring and came to the small town they grew up in to step up for her family. 

Walking through the halls of her high school was an interested recap of her life. She and her friends had so much time and in that place her dreams were realized. it took a couple of hours but she was able to register her niece and get all of her school books together. She only met a few of the young girls teachers but would meet the rest once school started.

Going to her car she was horrified to see she had a flat. And not just some ride on it until you get home flat tire the kind where you were literally driving on the rim if you moved it. Going to her trunk she looked down to her pencil skirt, heels and silk purple blouse. This was going to be horrible. Pulling out her spare tire, the tire iron and jack, she moved into place and put the items down. Eyeing the tire for a long while she finally threw her hair up into a messy bun and lifted her skirt above her thighs so she could squat down. Hearing someone ask if she needed a hand, she stood saying a thankful prayer. “Hi, yes please I have a flat.”

Before Sam rounded the car his heels skidded to a stop; practically leaving marks in the cement. Okay. Maybe not but he did stop real quick because he knew that voice. The thing was why was she here? “Look, if you wanted to get my attention you could have done it without orchestratin’ a flat.” He said as he looked down at the one and only Mercedes Jones. The woman who captured his heart what felt like centuries ago by this point. His hand casually laid on the trunk of the car and took in not only she with a jack in her hand but the fact she was actually in Lima. 

“Come on. Hand that over. I’ll take care of the tire while you tell me why you’re here and why you didn’t text me. I would’ve worn something better if I’d known we’d be seeing each other.” It wasn’t as if he had rags on but it wasn’t his most flattering shirt or best jeans. Sam slipped his hand from the car and he held a hand out, waiting for her to either hand the jack over; or her hand. He’d much prefer the latter but things had been kept on the platonic end of the spectrum and as much as he wished she’d come round he respected her wishes.

The day dragged but why wouldn’t it? It was Friday and time had a way of working backward when you were itching to get a start on the weekend. Sam did everything he could to keep from pushing the last kid outta the choir room but he an entire free weekend ahead of him ‘cause his housemate would be off on some trip to somewhere. He probably should’ve paid attention in case things went south and he had to go rescue him...

Sam’s thoughts distracted him long enough to realize he was alone in the room and hurried out, slapping the light switch and using his phone while he walked down the hallway. He jogged down the way to get to his car but as he raised his eyes to make sure he wasn’t about to run into a reversing car or just anyone in general; Sam noticed something happening a short ways away in the visitor parking area in front of the school. 

Now he was at a crossroads with what to do. One one hand he wanted to pick up the pizza he was seconds away from ordering but he also wanted to see if the person needed help. Sam weighed the options, going back and forth and the goodness of his heart won out and he sighed. His pizza and The Punisher will have to wait til later. Sam stuffed his phone into his jeans and hurried across the teacher’s parking lot and went towards the car. “Hey,” he called out, giving the person a head’s up he was near. “Need a hand?”
