Hope you enjoyed the weekend, it’s gonna be a short week on the blog as I prepare for Thanksgiving and take care of a few things at the radio station, but for now, enjoy some facts about a brilliantly-colored mineral that’s a variety of quartz: amethyst.

The name for this mineral comes from the Ancient Greek ἀ a- (“not”) and μέθυστος méthystos (“intoxicated”), which is a reference to the stone’s ability to protect its wearer from drunkenness. 

Medieval soldiers would wear amethyst stones into battle, believing they had healing powers. Leonardo thought the stones could control evil thoughts and, according to George Frederick Kunz’s Curious Lore of Precious Stones, “quicken the intelligence, and render men shrewd in business matters.”

Hues of this gemstone can vary from light pink to deep purple and may exhibit secondary hues or red and blue. The purple color is due to irradiation, iron impurities, and other trace elements. 

While once considered one of the most precious gemstones out there, the discovery of abundant stocks of amethyst in the 18th century made the stone lose much of its value.
