When does it end? When does the fear stop? When will my black brothers and sisters be comfortable to walk to the liquor store? When will my black brothers and sisters be comfortable going for a run? When will my brothers and sisters not fear law enforcement? As tired as I am, I can’t fathom what it’s like to be a black man or woman in this country. As a designer, as a human I have a responsibility to speak up on injustices. As a designer I have a job to use my platform to bring awareness and help in anyway I can. The world is looking at us, and they are appalled at what we have done and continue to do. When will people simply empathize with what’s going on? Is it so hard to be selfless? To look beyond yourself and look in the eyes of a mother who lost her child, a wife losing her husband, a brother or sister losing their sibling... the pain, the hurt. How can it be dismissed? I can not teach those who refuse to learn. I can’t not show someone who is willfully blind. I can not speak to someone who has their ears closed. What I can do, what we can ALL do is vote, protest, yell, and make our voices heard. We can research the folks running for local, county, state and federal office the way we would as if we were hiring someone. Protest, we see so many peaceful protests by the thousands speaking the demands they are looking for. Yell the names of those lives lost, don’t let their names be in vain. We need change in our justice system. Police reform to how the law is carried out to the prison system. We need to change how the economy only placates to certain demographics, we need everyone to benefit from a good economy, not just the rich. Our education system needs to benefit all. We need a government that works for all people as hard it can be, the majority need to be taken care of, not just those in certain zip codes. Go out into the world, inspire the youth, be kind to one another. Stop evil when you see it. Call out bigotry, racism, and sexism. There will be a day where my black brothers and sisters won’t need to fight wars at all ends, and I have confidence change is coming. Those are my thoughts.
