Cyprianic Road Opening Spell.
Inspired from traditional and contemporary sources under the guidance of the sorcerer turned saint, Cyprian of Antioch, this spell takes the form of a novena – a traditional form of Catholic devotion which takes place over the course of nine days either leading up to the saint’s feast day or offered in making petition to a particular saint.
In New World folk magic this technique has on many different magical forms either remaining dedicated to a saint or simply dedicated to a specific cause. This particular novena is designed to “open the roads” to greater success or overcome a difficult situation or situations by calling upon Saint Cyprian to assist you in your aims.
While this novena can simply be done by lighting a candle next to a glass of water offered to the saint, what will be described is the more formal version that I’ve historically found useful and am presently undergoing. The imagery follows the journey of Cyprian from pagan sorcerer to Christian perfection and his eventual sainthood by martyrdom.
For this ritual you will need:
A purple, glass encased candle (preferably with the saint’s image on it as found in botanicas or online)
Three limes
Three oranges
A bottle of either Saint Cyprian Oil or Road Opening Oil
Salt
Honey
A piece of paper with your petition written on it
A glass of water
and a plate
Although ritual timing is important, this spell can be commenced at any time of need although starting on a Saturday or at the New Moon would be ideal.
1. Arrange the plate in a place where it will not be disturbed along with the candle and petition folded underneath it.
2. Put a few drops of the chosen oil in the mouth of the candle and rub some around the lip of the candle. Not much is needed for this.
3. Arrange the limes around the candle and cut a cross in them and pour salt in the opening.
4. Next, arrange the oranges in a similar way but in their cross pour honey. The oranges and limes should be alternating.
5. When you are ready, set out the glass of water and knock nine times on the table calling out the name of Saint Cyprian, each time after calling out his name, make the Sign of the Cross. Other than the prayers, this is the only step repeated each day.
6. After calling out the novena cycle begins as described.
OPENING PRAYER (said on each day)
St. Cyprian, patron of Sorcerers and Magicians, I beseech you that you preserve me from all evil intents, arts, and perfidies. May they be full of confusion, those who attempt against my life. May my enemies be confused and scattered to the winds.
Guard my vision and my thoughts that I may understand the secret doctrines without error. Assist me to grow in power and wisdom that I may serve the good of mankind.
Grant me the power to intervene on behalf of those that come to me for help. Assist me in serving those who are bound by hexes, bewitching, and possessed of evil, so that the rabid wolf shall have dominion over them no longer.
CLOSING PRAYER (said on each day)
In the name of Cyprian and his seven candles, on behalf of his black dog and his seven gold coins. In the name of Cyprian and his silver dagger. In the name of Cyprian and his holy mountain. In the name of the tree of the zephyrs and the great oak. I ask and shall be answered, by the seven churches of Rome, the seven lamps of Jerusalem, the seven golden candles of Egypt. Amen.

After the novena period is concluded a number of options are possible for disposal, but most traditional would be to dispose of them in a paper bag at a crossroads or respectfully buried.
Although this may cause some consternation among more environmentally aware people, it is symbolic of the pseudo-sacramental quality the items used take on a holy quality and require a natural disposal. While I have personally not done this personally, I wouldn’t imagine it out of the realm of possibility to dispose of the organic materials in an organic waste bin or in nature and the rest recycled.
