District 12
: vamos-erwin: : vamos-erwin: : The Thiefvamos-erwin:“My God Sav!” Vamos...
vamos-erwin:
"Savera then", he said it viciously, with hate in his voice, which was because his cheek still stung from the malicious slap that she had given him, and as he grabbed her wrist viciously and pulled her down to sit next to him, he continued to look at her as he told her everything. "You think I wanted to do this? I HAD TO STEAL FROM THE MAN WHO RAPED ME AS A CHILD TO SURVIVE BACK IN 6; DO YOU THINK I'D WANT TO REMEMBER THAT EVERY SINGLE DAY OF MY LIFE SAVERA PRIM? EVERY SINGLE FUCKING DAY OF MY LIFE HERE I REMEMBER HIM ABUSING ME, VIOLATING ME. AND I HAVE NEVER FELT CLEAN SINCE!" Vamos lowers his voice and pants, he has never told anyone but Sophia about this; that was a big step for him and he couldn't help feeling he'd get no sympathy off of this girl.
"So Savera - yes I steal things, so that the Capitol can assess them - keep track of people; but I always steal them back and return them, at risk of my life. And though it seems I live the life of luxury Miss Prim because I don't have to flaunt myself for people like Gunnar or face the people who watched me die every single night like you", Vamps had never figured out what Sav did for a living, "I still have to face the image of that snotty-nosed, odious, repugnant little git raping me every day. So Miss Prim, I'd like to leave now..." Vamos stood up and turned to leave, not even caring whether she was crying or not.
"GET THE FUCK OFF ME!" She screamed, waving her arms about as she tried to get him off her. She refused to sit, no matter how viciously he pulled her down, she couldn't bring herself to even look at him properly. She listened vaguely to what he had to say. Raped? She couldn't care less. He murdered her. A supposed "friend."
As he got up to leave, she stared at him. She didn't feel much other than anger. In fact, she had stayed pretty strong for this one. "Vamos..." She said, her voice instantly softer, kinder. But her voice was a lie. She stepped closer to him, smiling softly. "You're dead to me." Her expression turned malicious once again, and she turned around walking to the area where her District 13 clothes were. "Oh, and I'll be telling them it was you who stole their belongings. Because you know what?" She turned her head to look at him, a slight snigger escaping her lips. "I'm gonna' make your life hell."

vamos-erwin:
"Why are you allowed to be here and not me? We both have jobs don't we? Things we have to do.... It's not like we chose them darling - it's not like Gunnar chose his!" His voice was growing into a snarl, he had told himself he'd never act like this towards her again, but the Capitol weren't giving him medication; a corner of his mind shouted out in vehemence 'why do I always go mad around her?', only to blush and hide away once more in embarrassment, doubting itself. But he ihaled slowly and looked her squarely in the eye - "It's my job Sav... I can't tell you much more than that..."
Without thinking, her hand swung, hitting him hard across the face. His cheek went red, and in an instant she felt proud of herself for actually doing it. She tried to be civil about this whole thing, but there was something about him that wouldn't allow her to do it. She edged closer to him, her tone vicious.
"You have no right to call me 'Sav'. I thought I already told you this." She stepped backwards, the anger still clear inside of her. "It's you job, to what?" Her eyes flicked to his hands where he held something hidden. Whenever he moved, he heard it though. A rattle, of some sorts? "To steal?" The shock on her face was apparent. "You steal the personal items of people who have been through hell? That's despicable." She shook her head with disapproval, fighting the urge to hit his other cheek.
: The Thief
vamos-erwin:
"My God Sav!" Vamos turned, his heart pounding and his blood throbbing painfully in his ears; he had heard footsteps, but he had never been to this part of 13 before, so he had been looking completely the wrong way. He hadn't expected to see Sav here, which was in fact as he had been avoiding her, even in the tribute area, lately due to an appalling, odious feeling in his stomach that something else would happen to worsen the situation. This was that time. That situation.
He can sense dully that he sits, Vamos looks Sav in the eye as the shock, the terror fades and a confused feeling of mixed emotions sets in. Relief. Curiosity Vehemence. Pity. Sympathy. Confusion...
"I might ask you the same question..."
She stood still, arms folded, staring at the boy. She'd finally sorted herself out; she wouldn't let him ruin her again. She was much stronger than that. She stared, anger rising in her as she waited for her answer. There was no reason for him to be in here, after all.
"Oh please, don't try and get smart with me. I have a right to be in here. You, however, do not." She took a step towards him. The evil look from the day she died came back to her face as she glared at the boy. She was inches away from him, ready to strike if needs be. "Answer me." She snarled, speaking in a quiet voice.
The Thief
Vamos flitted in and out of the shadows, stepping just inside the cracked wooden door to the backstage area of the stage in the affluent part of 13; he felt himself merge into the shadows, this was his life now. This is my life now..Although it must have been broad daylight on the surface, which was somewhere he hadn’t visited, a feeling of rampancy, an odd sensation of profligacy, that he hadn’t experienced in what felt like an era, but it was pitch black in the desolate maze of corridors backstage from the stage. He could hear muffled singing through the changing rooms, all the way from the stage. It reminded him of who he used to be. He could no longer afford to be that person.
Although he at first thought 13 was a place slightly upgraded from his previous standard of living, which had entailed events Vamos couldn’t bring himself to recall lest an odious feeling of pain rise the snake in him once again, because of the pristine white walls, the clinical feel and the lack of painful feelings, he now thought entirely differently. 13 was a place of slavery. Vamos-all of the tributes -were slaves. And though Vamos considered himself one of the other tributes, his line of work was narrow, his area of expertise extremely slim indeed. Looking through the changing rooms, he removed his night vision goggles as the careening, decrepit door swing shut with multiple noises of protest behind him; the blurriness in his vision, caused by his glasses steaming up cleared, and in the dim flickering light his pupils dilated. He had a job to do…
Vamos wasn’t proud of his line of work, it wasn’t particularly prolific, considering the situation he was in, but it was something he had to do. They had given him this job based on ‘what he was good at’, and Vamos couldn’t believe he wasn’t sat in a leather, cocooning psychiatrists chair or beside an artist’s easel.”What I’m good at - pfffffft!” It was years since he’d stolen anything. According to the Capitol, he was needed to keep the public in check, yet he had to be kept in check too. This awkward, untrustworthy and shady system of reliability and responsibility was disconcerting to Vamos; but what could he do?
He saw Sav’s bag and, resisting to go near it, lunged with a pace so rapid it belied that Vamos had lost his knack for theft at the bag next to Sav’s. He missed Sav. But now was not the time for sentimentality, removing the documents from the bag, along with a rattle that his current case carried with her at all times, he went to retreat meticulously to the door when he heard footsteps. A figure was moving in the corridor, approaching from the stage. But he could still hear the music. How could he be so stupid?
She walked down the corridor back to the changing rooms where her dance teacher had asked her to get ready earlier this evening. She was so nervous to perform, but it ended up being some of the most fun Savera had had in a while. It made her feel free, and she liked that.
She reached the doors to the changing rooms and walked inside, hearing the soft patter of feet on the floor as she did so. But somehow, it still seemed eerily quiet. She slowed down her pace, walking softly so that she couldn't be heard. Peering around, she spotted the movement of a dark figure. What were they doing? She edged closer, keeping quiet still. It was a He, and he was trying to hide. Only this wasn't just any person. This was the person who had killed Savera in the arena.
"What the hell are you doing?!"
"Savera Prim!" Her head snapped up at her name. "Here, now." Her dance teacher called her over in a stern voice. She stood up slowly from the chairs at the side of the hall and walked over to the teacher, partially confused. "We need you to step in for one of the girls. We're a girl short."
"But, that's not the dance I have practised for, miss." She spoke in a quiet voice. Her dance teacher was very intimidating, and Savera always found it hard to speak properly when she was around her.
"You're the only girl who knows the whole routine." This was true. Caspar and Savera had spent most of their work day watching the dancers perform for their show at the club tonight. They needed as much space as possible for their routine, meaning it was hard for all the other dancers to practice their own. So Savera had watched them perform their routine multiple times, each dance move now replaying perfectly in her head.
"But, I-" She tried to protest but it was no use.
"No but's, Savera. The girls will run through it with you and then you must get ready for the show." With that, her teacher turned on her heel and walked off in the other direction. It was pointless arguing; she had to do this.
***
Her body trembled violently as she stood in line with the other girls on stage. The lights were dim, but they'd be up in any minute. The soft chattering of the people at the club were apparent, and by all the different voices she could hear, Savera knew that there would be a lot of eyes on the dancers tonight.
The lights went up. Savera kept her head down but managed to flick her eyes up to look at the awaiting audience. Almost all of the tables were full, and people were stood around in small groups. The music began to ease in. Come on Savera, you can do this. She inhaled deeply to calm herself, but she knew it was no use. Stay calm, Savera. And then they started.
She started off extremely shaky at first, and at one point she thought she was going to fall over. But she forced herself to keep straight and keep going. After a moment though, her movements began to leave her more fluidly, her graceful twists causing the brightly coloured lights to dance around her. She stopped shaking, a whole new confidence formed in her as she continued the dance. In a way, she felt free.
Her hands moved through the air in front of her graceful patterns, skirt swishing as she twisted round. She felt cheerful and calm. She felt as if in some way, dancing was a way to escape any of her bad thoughts.
Savera had left the canteen with her heart racing slightly. She was on her way to her job for the first time, and being the shy and awkward girl she was she knew she wouldn't be able to cope. She followed the signs down a few long, grey corridors, finally ending up in a big dance hall with many other people. People she didn't recognize. People that she was afraid of getting to know.
She stood completely still, staring blankly ahead of her. A tall woman with vibrant yellow hair stood in front of them, blurting instructions out non-stop. Her mind was unable to process what exactly this woman was saying; the fear rising up in her body. Why were they putting her through this? Savera didn't know what to do; she didn't know what to say to people.
"Savera Prim!" Finally paying attention, Savera's eyes darted towards the woman. "Here, now. You're partnered with Caspar." She stared for a moment, finally pushing her feet forward and walking towards the woman. A boy around the same age as Savera stood next to her, blonde curly locks flopping in his face. He nodded in her direction as she shuffled over, Savera allowing herself to give him a small smile back.
He led her into a space and they stood in silence for a moment. "Okay, stand ready!" shouted the Capitol tutor, voice stern. Savera stood into position, body still slightly rigid from fear. The woman turned some blaring music on, chanting numbers as a way to get them all ready. And then they began. Left foot, slide. Right foot, slide. Spin, 1, 2. Remember it Savera.
"Not bad for someone who's just started." A quiet, male voice rung through her ears. She looked up from the floor to see Caspar looking at her, a slight smile at his lips.
"Thank you." She replied, voice quiet. They continued to dance in silence, listening carefully to the music to keep in time. She finally broke the silence. "How long have you been here for?" She asked curiously. Maybe what she needed now was a friend, and the only way she would know is if she tried to make one.
"About 2 years. It's hell." He replied with a slight sigh. Savera nodded slightly, understanding exactly what he meant, even though she hadn't been here as long. "But I suppose it's better than being dead." He said with a smile, trying to lighten the mood.
"Indeed it is." She said, smiling back. Left 1, 2. Right, slide. "But I know what you mean. I've been here a few days and already it's hit me." She said, chuckling slightly.
"Yeah, it's pretty morbid here ain't it? I just gotta' remember to not go insane." "I think I already am." "Then you gotta' stay positive. Trust me, I went through a hard time here once and it makes this place even worse. Stay positive and you'll be just fine." He smiled reassuringly at her. It went silent once again as she thought about what he said. Maybe if she tried to stay positive, if she made friends, if she actually enjoyed herself, maybe then she wouldn't be so... different. The way she had been lately wasn't who she usually was, and she needed to change this.
From behind them they heard the angry shouting of the Capitol tutor, cursing at a pair for messing up the dance steps. "Woah is she always this bad?" Savera asked, turning her head to look at the woman. The pair were cowering in front of her, the fear they felt could easily be seen from their expressions.
"Not always this bad. She obviously just doesn't like you, Savera." He said, nudging her arm gently with a laugh. Savera pretended to look shocked, but then started to laugh slightly herself.
"Please, we all know she's jealous of me." She said, smirking.
"Obviously. We're all jealous of you." He said, smiling back at her.
Maybe a new friend is all I need.
“Oh, do you really?” He asked, his eyebrows raised as he moved the three plates away from him. Resting his elbow on the table, he looked at her, shaking his head slightly. “You’re meant to say that I’m a sexy bitch and all that girlfriend-y stuff.” He grinned waggling his eyebrows.
“I’m as happy as always, miss Prim.” He pulled his plate back towards him and continued to eat. He then looked over at her. “You sure you aren’t gonna eat?” He asked, looking at the plate and then back to her.
She nodded her head, holding back the smirk on her lips. "Oh I'm sorry... But I don't quite see it myself." She said with a wink, finally letting the smirk play at her lips. She sat back in her chair playing with the tips of her hair once again.
She looked at him, quickly flicking her eyes down to the food and back up to him. She shook her head, a disgusted look on her face. "I'm sure I can last a bit longer without eating." She said to him.
She stayed silent for a moment, keeping her hands running through the ends of her hair. She turned in her seat to look at him, her eyebrows raised slightly. "Just outta' curiosity, why don't you have clothes on?"
“Why would I be embarrassed?” He asked, trying to look genuinely confused. “You gotta admit, I look pretty sexy right now.” He grinned, watching her as she sat back down and started to look down at the table again. He pulled her plate towards him, finishing off the last bit of his before starting on hers.
“You get used to it when it’s the only thing to eat, darling.” He said, taking another bite and turning to face her properly. “How are you today?” He ran his fingers through his hair, his expression turning soft. Then he started to laugh. He couldn’t even take himself seriously at this point.
She rolled her eyes, a smirk at her lips. "I beg to differ." She said, nudging his arm playfully. She moved her head up to look around them again. Everybody had stopped staring, but from the way most of them huddled together, she could tell that they were gossiping.
She turned to face him, trying to hold back her laugh. "I'm okay." She said quietly with a smile. "How are you?" She asked in return, running her fingers through the tips of her hair. She smirked slightly, already knowing the answer.
He looked at her for a moment, then started to laugh. “Are you embarrassed, miss Prim?” He asked, raising his eyebrows. “You shouldn’t be, you know.” He started to laugh again, twisting slightly before pulling her onto his lap. “I’m the Gunnar Overwhill. You should be thankful you’re in my selected few.”
His teasing was apparent, but just to make sure he kissed her playfully, wrapping an arm around her. He then looked around again, winking at a large group of people who were whispering quietly and looking over at the three of them.
She laughed as she shook her head. "How are you not embarrassed?" She said before being pulled to sit on his lap. She saw all of the people judging them as they all twisted in their seats to stare. She moved her head to face the floor, her hair covering her face as she blushed slightly.
She moved herself off his lap and back into her chair, eyes staring blankly at the table in front of her. She laughed slightly as he asked Hadrian about her food. She slid her own plate in front of him, still keeping her eyes focused on the table. "Have mine." She turned to look at him, eyebrows raised slightly. "How do you even keep it down? It's vile."
For a guy, Gunnar had to admit, he was pretty good at strutting. He did exactly this as he barged into the large room, getting a series of funny looks as he grabbed a plate. The smell of the food didn’t get to him any more, which could only be a good thing. He looked around, waving at a few of the people who gave him funny looks before noticing Sav, sitting alone with a red headed girl who could only be Hadrian.
He grinned, sauntering over to them, narrowly avoiding a boy at least half his size. He placed his plate down looking at them both and sitting down. “People need to get used to seeing me in my underwear.” He said matter-of-factly, before taking a bite of his food and grinning at them both once more.
Savera heard the noise of the canteen doors swinging open. She moved her head away from Hadrian towards the doors, looking to see what was happening. There she saw Gunnar strutting into the canteen as happy as ever in just his underwear. "Speaking of Gunnar..." She said to Hadrian, shaking her head slightly, groaning. She rested her elbows on the table, putting her head into her hands.
She heard him sit down, sighing as she moved her hands away to look up at him. "Everybody is staring." She said quietly, shaking her head once again. She looked around to see everybody staring over at the three of them, shocked and puzzled looks on all of their faces.
She raised an eyebrow at her answer. “Dance? Hmm, wouldn’t have expected that out of you. Not that that’s a bad thing.” She smirked a bit. It felt good to be somewhat happy again, after all the pain and torture in the Arena. “God knows what they’ll give me. Probably some boring job.”
She looked around once again, just to make sure. No sign of Spens. She looked down at her response, but then smiled a bit at the latter. At least she had seen Gunnar around. She rolled her eyes. “I’m sure he is.” She thought about what job he could do. Weapons? God knows what that boy could do.
She sighed and looked at the table. “A day or two. He died the day before me.” She pursed her lips, still looking at the table. “Well, if you see Spens, tell him I’m dea- here. I’m here.” She smiled. “Same for Gunnar.” She then looked over at the food that Savera had been eating. It looked like a bunch of goop, and it just generally looked gross. “Is this what they serve every day?”
She chuckled slightly. "No, not many people would. But believe it or not, I was a rather outgoing person around people I knew in District 12." She ran her fingers through the ends of her hair, eyes moving back down towards the table. "Nowadays... not so much." Her voice went quieter once again.
Her eyes flicked back up to Hadrian, a reassuring smile on her face. "Yeah I'll tell them if I see them, but I'm sure you'll see Spens before me." She followed Hadrians eyes to the tray on the table, a similar look of disgust on her own face. "Pretty much; I've still not learnt how to stomach it yet though." She picked up her fork, using it to prod the food in front of her. "I genuinely have no idea what it is, though." She laughed slightly as she spoke. "This place is hell."
She nodded as she spoke. Work? She had only worked once in her lifetime, cleaning up a store for little money. She knew they weren’t getting paid, though. She’d have to stay here and work until she died. She sighed at the thought.
She crossed her arms, then laughed a little at her last statement. “I don’t think anyone here is, including me.” She looked around the room again for reassurance. Everyone looked so sad, so depressed. Some of these people must have been here for years. She didn’t get how anyone stayed sane here.
“So…if we all get jobs, what do you do?” Then, for some reason, her mind wandered to Spens. Spens. He was here! She knew he wasn’t in this room, though, she would have recognized him by now. She also knew how big this place was, and how that it’s impossible just to call someone up and ask how they are. She’d have to actually search for him.
“Oh, uh, also, have you seen Spens around? Or Gunnar?”
She froze as she asked the question, but then sighed. People would find out anyway; what was the point in being shy about it? She laughed slightly as she spoke. "I, uh, I dance." She looked at Hadrian, a smirk at her lips. She stayed silent for a moment. "I didn't ask for that job. In fact, I hate it. But they test you on the things you're good at and then you basically get given a job."
She looked at the people around her once again, looking through the crowds to see if there was anybody she recognized; preferably Spens for Hadrian. "I've not seen Spens, sorry. But I have seen Gunnar. I was just with him; he's quite... popular in this place." She thought back to the Arena for a moment. How long had Savera been in District 13 for? And who else was here who she knew? Her mind seemed to be completely oblivious to the things that were happening in the world, and only seemed to be focused on tearing Savera apart. "How long has Spens been here for?" She asked Hadrian.
She looked around her surroundings. Honestly, right now she’d rather be in the Arena- with the tall trees and blue sky. Everything here is just so dull and boring. From the looks on the people’s faces, they know this, too. She looked back up at Savera as she spoke.
“Yeah, I’ve been here around ten minutes and I feel like I’m in prison.” She chucked a bit, but then looked back down. She was still as confused as ever, as the nurse she had didn’t answer any questions. She wanted to know why they were there, and what she had to do. Maybe Savera knew. At least she hoped.
“Do you…do you know why we’re here?” She looked back up at her. “Like, why we’re not dead, and what we’re supposed to do?”
She laughed slightly, still keeping her eyes fixed on the table. It was like a prison. "I feel the same." She said, voice still quiet, her mind not making sense of anything. She moved her head to face Hadrian again as she spoke, keeping quiet in thought. She shook her head slightly. She'd never really thought about it since being there; she was just happy that she was alive.
"Maybe it's to work, I don't know." She said, shrugging her shoulders as she pushed her tray over to the other side of the table. She couldn't stomach any more of that... mess. "We're all given a job, and then we work. I've never really thought about it in all honesty." She pursed her lips slightly. "Let's just say that my mind isn't at its best at the moment." Her voice became a whisper as she spoke to the red-headed girl.
