people will look at classic dystopian sci-fi like "wow how did the author predict this would happen" and the answer is they didn't. they hoped and hoped this wouldn't happen. (some of them, the lucky few perhaps, even died believing the worst had been averted.) these writers took a look at terrible things happening around them, and imagined a future where these terrible things dominated and warped reality, and they held it up to the audience and said "see? does this future not appall you??? it has already begun."

Like imagine you find a 7 year old in the woods and she’s like my mom is gonna kill me because I’m prettier than her and she’s not kidding. You know this queen is that sort of person. So you and your roommates adopt the kid and tell her don’t talk to strangers. And she keeps talking to strangers and getting poison combs stuck in her hair and whatnot.

Like yeah that’s kinda stupid but also she’s seven. She likes apples.

Also imagine it from the hunter’s perspective. The queen tells you this bitch is prettier than me I need you to take her out in the woods and kill her. And then you see who you’re supposed to kill and it’s a 2nd grader. Like how are you supposed to react to that sort of situation? Kill a human child? No. Because you’re not a brainless evil minion you’re just some guy dealing with a cartoonishly evil monarch. Of course you let her go.

He did cause the evil queen to dance to death in red hot shoes though. That was kinda cool.

See, I think that still works.

You are the guardsman assigned to protect the eight-year-old Prince. You are currently in the middle of the forest because he absolutely had his heart set on "going hunting", and the royal second-grader should definitely not be traipsing around the woods on his own. You let him go a little on ahead and he comes running back talking about how there's a dead girl in the clearing and there's no-one else around and he wants to take her home because she's really pretty, Hans, and she's all alone!

You let him drag you to said clearing and okay, that is one angelic-looking dead child alright, and on the one hand the quality of her clothes and the craftsmanship on the coffin (who builds a see-through coffin?) speak to potential Consequences if you simply carry her off, but also for the amount of vines that have grown on the coffin she looks extraordinarily un-decayed, so you should probably get the court alchemist's opinion on that, and there's no way he's going to come all the way out here in his embroidered velvet curly-shoes. And also this kid is technically assigned by God as your natural superior, or something.

So fine. You hoist the coffin onto your shoulder (it's not like the Prince can do it. He's eight.) and head back toward the castle, Prince chattering blithely all the way. And then you turn your ankle on a rock and suddenly there's a thump and a cough and a lot of shouting from inside the coffin and you have now become a key player in a tense political incident with the next kingdom over.

You should probably ask for a raise.

The thing about Harry in the books, and how he notices Malfoy so much, is that like.. the tone of it is just so different to how he notices other characters that he (actually) doesn’t like.

For example, we get much more of a sense of Harry’s reluctance to be near Lockhart, his distaste and distrust of Lockhart, any time he has to interact with him. And Harry even notices that Lockhart is good looking, but he notices it in more of a sense that it’s not something he’s personally drawn to. Kind of similar to how he notices the Veela at the World Cup. He recognises it in passing, because it’s objectively noticeable.

And yet the tone of how he notices Malfoy is so different. His gaze is constantly drawn to Malfoy. He notices Malfoy anytime he’s around - whether it’s across the hall (surrounded by literally HUNDREDS of other students) or in the busy thoroughfare of Diagon Alley. And he’s not noticing Malfoy’s looks in a kind of.. dismissive, passing way. He’s hyper focused on Malfoy’s expressions, his underlying mood, the way he’s carrying himself. He’s always noticing how he looks, his pointy features, the flash of his hair. He recognises him instantly even from a distance.. even though I’m sure there were plenty of other blonde students at Hogwarts. He’s constantly drawn to him, in a way that Harry is not drawn towards other people he actively dislikes or hates. THAT’s the difference. Harry wants absolutely nothing to do with anyone else he dislikes; but with Malfoy, he’s completely drawn in, even when Malfoy is doing his best to avoid being noticed.

OMG ok so Harry is glamoured for some reason and bumps into Draco and it Piques™️ his interest so he keeps going to meet w Draco until they get closer and closer.

Then one day Draco’s like “Goodness, am I glad I met you, Thomas. I don’t think there’s anyone else I’d rather be with right now.”

Harry’s sweating as he adjusts his collar when he says, “Really? Nobody?”

Draco shakes his head. “And Thomas is such a superb name. Draco and Thomas. It flows so fantastically, don’t you think? I thank the stars that you were named Thomas.”

“Uh. But what if I wasn’t? Called Thomas, I mean. What if I had a different name?”

Draco blinks at him. “Is this some sort of philosophical question? Because if so, I shan’t indulge. Now, pick up my bags, we haven’t finished in Madam Griddles yet.”

Harry reluctantly does as he’s told as he lowkey thinks Draco only specifically wants to date Thomas’. In reality, Draco’s known it was Harry all along, he’d be able to pick his mannerisms out from a crowd away, and Harry also sucks at acting. But he’s keeping it up for the bit until Harry can pussy up and reveal himself.
