Free range legally requires very little. It usually just means the chickens are kept in a giant shed or warehouse rather than in a cage, which is no better for their welfare and they are often crowded to the point of extreme stress and even suffocation. Cannibalism is common, so the vast majority of free range birds have their have their beaks cut or seared off. Free range means chickens have to have access to outdoors, but it doesn’t have to be year round and in many cases it is a 5x5 muddy patch of dirt that most of them will never even see. These labels also aren’t audited, so you’re just trusting the producers that they’re telling the truth. We have hundreds hours of undercover footage from so called “free range” farms of chickens dying by the hundreds before slaughter because they are packed too tightly, this cost is lower than what it would cost to give them more space so it is simply built into the business model as acceptable loss. This footage is always undercover, because despite the shiny happy farm images on the packaging, they rather conveniently won’t let the public see inside those windowless walls themselves.

This is the reason why huge corporations like McDonald’s could shift to free range while not charging any more for it. Legitimate welfare reforms would cost money that most of these places are unwilling to pay. Money that consumers themselves aren’t willing to pay, either. Even if these places were audited properly, welfare reforms are never meaningful since so long as an animal is being treated as commercial property, corporations will always find a way to spend as little as they possibly can on them to keep them alive just long enough to make a profit. Anything else would be considered a waste of money since death is the end goal for these birds anyway. Everyone knows this is how corporations work, but suddenly when “their” eggs or chicken is involved people are suddenly blindly trusting of large corporations and labels which they have never bothered to actually research for themselves.

None of this is a secret, or some crazed conspiracy theory, you can look up the requirements for the free range label yourself. Don’t look up what the industry itself says it means, look up what it is legally required and how it is monitored and enforced, or rather, how it is not monitored or enforced. It rose out of a desire to capitalise on the so-called compassion of “conscious consumers”, and free range gives these people what they want; the feeling that these products are somehow more humane without compromising on the food you enjoy or ever having to see for yourself. We hand these people our money to feel a little less guilty but we never look into it ourselves because if we’re really honest with ourselves; we don’t want to know.

There is no such thing as a cruelty free animal product, there are simply ones that are slightly less horrific. You cannot compassionately exploit an animal who would rather be free. You cannot humanely kill someone who does not want to die.

As individuals, unfortunately we can’t. But the good news is that none of us need to consume eggs, or any animal products, our bodies have absolutely no requirement for them. The best thing we can do is to stop funding this cruelty by not buying eggs or any other animal product, that way we reduce demand. We vote with our money, if people keep paying them, they will keep doing it. Please don’t be like the majority of people and agree that it’s cruel but do absolutely nothing about it. If you believe that this is wrong, and you want to actually live your values, then get informed and go vegan. It is inexpensive, healthy and more convenient than it has ever been. There is a whole community of us here on tumblr who would be more than happy to help, myself included.

I read this the other day and it hit me, hard. When I first got into fitness, I looked up to a lot of women who I perceived to be the essence of health, but slowly I learned that having abs does not make you healthy. Having 100k followers does not make you healthy. Working out 6x a week does not make you healthy.

The fitness industry is about fitness, and often times health is neglected for the sake of a physique (having 10% body fat year round for a woman is NOT HEALTHY). Eating only vegetables and neglecting other macronutrients is not healthy. Eating ice cream for 6 meals a day is not healthy.

I am in no way the epitome of health. I don’t eat as many vegetables as I should. I don’t do as much cardio as I should. And sometimes my brain gets sick. THATS OKAY.

Please remember that both physical and mental health are far more important for the longevity of your life than being ripped to shreds. Please remember that you have more to offer than a body. Please remember that fitness is not synonymous with health.

You know the post that talks about how you'd save X gallons of water and X emissions into the air if you went vegan. Please tell me you guys don't use anything with an engine (vehicle, train, airplane), electricity, stove, dishwashers, washing machines, facets and stuff. That is still contributing to usage of water and putting chemical emissions in the air. Plus the farm equipment to be able to grow crops and grow plant based foods. Then factories and stuff to process some of those foods.

WOW okay. This really pisses me off! So just because we drive a car and use electricity we should also contribute to the environmental destruction caused by animal agriculture?!? It’s SO easy to be vegan, not so easy to live in this world without using electricity or cars…Better question though, what do YOU do to help the planet?? Since you’re on technology yourself, and also seem to enjoy killing animals - seems a bit hyprocritical?? On more than one level.
