   Siegfried and Fafnir from Norse mythology and Richard Rogers opera, Siegfried, oil on canvas by Ferdinand Leeke, German, 1859-1925.

   Leeke was famous for scenes from Wagnerian operas. Here Fafnir has been transformed by magic into a dragon to guard a massive treasure hidden in a cave and is killed by Siegfried.

   Remnants of an Army, 1879, oil on canvas by Elizabeth Southerden Thompson, Lady Butler, British, 1846-1933. Tate Britain, London, England.

   This painting shows William Brydon at the gates of Jalalabad. He was the last of 16,500 men evacuated from Kabul in the retreat of 1842.

   Elizabeth Thompson was one of the few female artists to gain fame for her history paintings and especially military battle scenes.

  Cromwell Reads a Letter Found in Charles’s Cabinet after Naseby, oil on canvas by Charles Landseer, British, 1799-1879. Alte Nationalgalerie, Berlin, Germany.

  Landseer was meticulous in his attention to historic detail and accuracy of accessories and details in his paintings. Here he includes the civilians killed in the conquest of the English Civil War.

  Naseby was a decisive battle in that war in 1645 which was fought between the Royalist Army of King Charles I and Parliamentarian New Model Army commanded by Thomas Fairfax and Oliver Cromwell.

  The letter was captured from the king’s personal baggage and victory was partly due to the contents of war plans which had fallen into the hands of the Parliamentarians.

   Home: The Return from the Crimea, 1859, oil on panel by Sir Joseph Noel Paton, Scottish, 1821-1901. Royal Collection, Windsor, England.

   Paton’s paintings were characterized by a meticulous style using a thin application of paint and a somewhat bleached coloring. His work was admired by Queen Victoria.

  A London Jo -- The End of the Day, 1884, oil on canvas by Augustus Edwin Mulready, English genre artist, 1844-1904. Bonham’s international auction house.

  While Charles Dickens sketched the plight of the poor of London with his pen, Mulready used paint. Mulready did as much to bring attention to the problem of distressed children as did Dickens.

  Daumier was a printmaker, caricaturist, painter, and sculptor who commented on the social life in France in the 1800s.

   The Ecstasy of St. Francis, 1601, oil on canvas by Giovanni Baglione Italian, 1566-1643. Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois, USA.

  A late Mannerist and early Baroque artist, Baglione was also a historian who wrote about other artists. While being influenced by Caravaggio, he was critical of Caravaggio’s life and later work.

    Wonderland, print based on a watercolor by Adelaide Claxton, 1840-1900, British painter, illustrator, and inventor. Cover illustration for the 2012 edition of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

    Claxton was one of the first British women to make a major part of her living through the commercial press. 

     Alice certainly has her hands full with the image under her chair of what seems to be a knight, a very unhappy black cat, and a ghost wafting up from the candle smoke.

  The Creation, circa 1896/1902, gouache on board by James Tissot, French artist and illustrator, 1836-1902. Jewish Museum, New York City, New York.

  Tissot was a successful artist in Paris society where he had studied and had become famous for his beautifully dressed ladies.

  Doyle drew the first cover for the first issue of Punch magazine published in London and designed its masthead which was used for a half century.

  Skulls. Pencil and chalk drawings attributed to Charles Landseer, British, 1799-1879. Wellcome Images. Wellcome Trust, a global charitable foundation based in the United Kingdom.

   Landseer was from a family of artists and was a student of Henry Fuseli at the Royal Academy of Art in London, England.  Charles Landseer made many sketches and drawings of anatomy and painted scenes of history.
