seeing people defend hitting children as a form of discipline is one of the worst things i’ve ever seen.

stop hitting your child you abusive fuck, they’re not respectful, they’re scared. and yes they fucking feel worse by being physically abused than you will ever feel after harming your child.

and if anyone brings up the “i was hit and turned out ok!” bullshit i want to remind you that if you think hitting children is a good thing and a part of parenting instead of abuse, you did not fucking turn out okay.

As someone who was spanked very frequently as I child I can say I really think it stunted my development of a sense of empathy, compassion, and understanding

Because rather than having it explained to me why I shouldn’t do something, the reason given was “because I said so and because I’ll spank you again”

Literally parenting by fear

I didn’t learn to understand actions and consequences, I just learned that some things are bad and wrong and I’m not allowed to question why (that was considered ‘backtalking’ in my house and would earn you another spanking)

I don’t mean to make my parents sound like villains but I do think they’re a product of the generation that thinks knee-jerk reactions solve every single problem in life

This is very important. I wasn’t hit but I was never explained why I got punishment (be it not being allowed to watch TV, play videogames or go play with my friends, which are fair punishments, but you still gotta tell your kid why they’re receiving them!) My parents just said “because I said so, you have no right to ask me for explanations” and I always found it weird, but I never knew why until I grew up. When I realized that I was being denied information as to why I fucked up, and how I could fix it, this led to me being very bad at solving problems because I don’t know what to do when it’s explained to me what I did wrong.

It’s very sad that our parents’ generation (parents of people older than… Let’s say, 15)  was never really taught that children need communication and information, and never a gratuitous (to them) punishment.
