In the process of running this blog and looking for sheet music for my own purposes, I’ve amassed a pretty big collection of sources for sheet music, and I thought I’d share them with you all. i know I’m forgetting a ton of sites but oh well
* - free
# - subscription
$ - buy individual songs
• (*) my blog - cello music + the occasional orchestra arrangement
• (*/# optional) musescore - user created sheet music for any instrument or combination of instruments. there are some really amazing compositions and arrangements that I’ve found on here (this is also the notation software I use because it’s really nice and it’s free. you can also buy a pro account on here but that’s really for posting because it’ll only let you post five scores without a pro account)
• (*/# optional) scribd - not primarily for sheet music, but there’s a ton on here anyway (note: technically it requires a subscription, which does cost money, but it also gives you a free download for everything you upload so just upload random pdfs if you don’t wanna pay)
• (*) chromatik - official, legal sheet music for a ton of instruments that’s completely free. you can’t download, but you can just screenshot it if you need to save it
• (*/# optional) 8notes - lots of instruments, but not a huge selection of music, especially non-classical. no download without subscription but you can screenshot
• (*) imslp - free, legal archive of classical music. if you want classical music, this is the place to go. they have recordings, arrangements, conductor’s scores, individual parts, everything.
• ($) musicnotes - pretty much everything is on here. there isn’t a ton of classical music though
• ($) sheetmusicplus - even larger selection than musicnotes, also has more classical music
• ($) jwpepper - every music teacher i’ve ever known uses this site. if you need to buy a book of sheet music or an piece for an orchestra, choir, or band, this is the place to go.
• (# with free trial) sheetmusicarchive - classical music
• ($) amazon - i mean, it’s amazon. what can’t you get on amazon.
• (*) ifthesepianosheetswerestates - not active anymore, but there’s a ton of sheet music for piano here
• (*) duke university’s online archives - classical string quartets, historic american music
• (*) master post of twenty one pilots piano music
• (*) noteflight - very similar to musescore, but they don’t have as many scores
• (*) jellynote - mostly guitar tabs but there’s also a fair bit of sheet music. like musescore and noteflight, it’s all user created.
• ($) thepianoguys - buy sheet music for the piano guys (it’s kinda expensive tho)
• finale - most professional composers use either finale or sibelius. however, they’re both pretty expensive (although finale is much more expensive - $600 compared to $120) so i don’t really recommend them that much
• sibelius
• musescore - what i personally use. all or almost all the capabilities of finale or sibelius, but it’s free.
• noteflight
other random music related resources:
• midomi - can’t remember the name of a song? sing or hum part of it and this site will find it
• shazam - similar to midomi
onchord - finds songs in the same key, that contain the same chords, or use the same progressions
• chordify - tells you the chord patterns of any song using youtube (this one doesn’t usually work for me but i think it’s because i’m using a school computer)
• teoria - practice music theory (THIS SITE SAVED MY LIFE WHILE TAKING AP MUSIC THEORY. IT IS THE REASON I GOT A FIVE. USE IT. GET YOUR TEACHER TO SET UP OFFICIAL ACCOUNTS.)
• ap music theory masterpost
• thenostalgiamachine - enter a year and listen to popular music from that year
• complete lists of artists’ music: ed sheeran lana del rey the 1975 charli xcx
• sites that you enter an artist/song/genre and it suggests things musicroamer liveplasma tastekid
• all the music you’ve ever reblogged
• retroj.am - put in your date of birth and it’ll give you a specific playlist for every year you were in school
• tunefind - find any song that played in an episode of a tv show
• infinite jukebox
