Today is Lydia’s 4th birthday. As happy as I am to see Lydia, a rescue chicken reach her 4th birthday. I am also sad. Why? Lydia is the only one of 1,000 chicken sisters celebrating this momentous birthday. Lydia and Bonnie, who sadly passed away last year, are the only two sisters to see the outside world. To feel grass on their feet. Sun on their backs. To experience life. That’s 998 hens who knew nothing but fear, pain, darkness. Not to mention their brothers. They experience nothing of life. If you buy eggs you are supporting their suffering. You are supporting their death. You may think by buying ‘free range’ eggs you are supporting a better life. Lydia was classified as ‘free range’. Today is all about Lydia. She is getting cake, attention, care, hugs, lots and lots of hugs. She matters.

They all do.

Chicken Breeds: Bekisar 

The Bekisar, or Ayam Bekisar, is the first generation hybrid offspring of a green junglefowl (Gallus varius) and domesticated chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus). The roosters have a glossy blackish green plumage and are highly prized for their loud clear calls and striking coloration, while the hens are usually dull and infertile.

Bekisars were traditionally used by the original inhabitants of the Sunda Islands as symbolic or spiritual mascots on outrigger canoes, and used for their loud, clear calls to communicate with other canoes overseas, and consequently spread over a wide area. The original hybrids are rarely fertile but backcrosses with domestic chickens are sometimes achieved and thus several landraces of Pacific chickens have some Bekisar ancestry, such as the Sumatra, Ayam Cemani, Ponape, and Rapanui/Olmec Fowl breeds

There are subcategories of Bekisar, depending on what chicken breed the Green Junglefowl was crossed with. The Bekisar Cemani or Bekicem is a cross between a male green junglefowl and an Ayam Cemani hen that is prized for its glossy violaceous feathers (last photo).
