Jessica: My mother gave birth at the age of fifteen. After a week she ran away from the hospital. A month later, after I recovered my grandma took me home to take care of me.

Mario: Recovered?

Jessica: Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome – experienced by babies born with addictions to different substances. In my case – heroin. That’s why she had run away – as far as I know, the treatment program includes observed withdrawing of both mother and child and I guess she couldn’t have borne it. The abstinence is a hard process itself, on top of postpartum depression, on top of a constantly crying baby. You already know how I roll, you’ve been putting up with me for the last few weeks. Heh.

Mario: Jess, all babies cry a lot!

Jessica: It’s different. NAS ones experience tremors and seizures and sleeping problems so uncontrollable high-pitched crying is due. It’s not the same as when sweet pink bundles of joy are crying because hungry or just want to be kissed and cuddled.
