Sho broke eye contact as he decided how much he wanted to divulge to Joshua regarding his time away.

"Someone had to gather data while you and your co-factors were all flipping each other's bits. My search algorithm just happened to take me away from the origin."

“With everything that’s gone wrong for us, I feel like something’s gonna ruin this too. And that’s the last thing I want. She deserves something good for once.”

Opening up like this wasn’t exactly something he’d wanted to do, but he didn’t really have anyone else to talk to. He knew Uzuki was nervous and stressed, and he didn’t want to put more on her.

“Uzuki’s mom is helping out, and my mom is too. I, uh… I get to see her again now. Long story.” One hell of a long story how we all got to this point. “I’ll have to introduce you. We’re all just trying to do our best, but I don’t know what I’m doing. I know Uzuki doesn’t. I just want things to go right for once.”

He’s trying to keep himself from rambling on about how much he just wants her to be happy. He decides to change the topic slightly.

“We’ve got all the kids invited, Joshua, a few friends from the UG…” There’s a pause. “Oh yeah, a friend of the kids is gonna be there, someone else that was stuck in Shiba’s shitshow. And, uh… Said friend is also actually my cousin.” There’s an awkward laugh. “I keep too many secrets sometimes, huh?”

“Sounds like you’re using every parameter in your domain to optimize this thing. I’m confident that it will be a memorable day-- for the right reasons.” Sho imagined the kind of person who would try to ruin Uzuki and Kariya’s wedding, and the consequences they’d face for attempting such a foolish thing. “I pity any zeptogram who tries to rain on your parade.”

Sho was certainly surprised to hear that Kariya had a relative in the three-year Game; the Reaper could undoubtedly see him look off into the middle distance as he tried to deduce who it was. “You keep people at arm’s length to protect them. We’re practically congruent in that dimension.” Although he’s learned a lot, especially from the two of them.

“It’ll be a hell of a set union, that’s for sure. Still, even Joshua knows how to be a good boy when he needs to.” Sho laughed to himself, slapping a palm on the table and causing a small tidal wave in his bowl of noodles. “You may have found the one thing that everyone in Shibuya can be on the same side of the equation for.”

There’s a chuckle as Sho insists he’d behave, but that quickly turns into a frown.

“Hell no, I haven’t changed my mind.” The answer was quick, maybe too quick, but he would never change his mind about this, about being with Uzuki like this. “I’m just…”

He sighs. He doesn’t want to admit it, but finally, he quietly does.

“…I’m just nervous as hell, alright?” He looks embarrassed as he says it, and he has to glance away. “I want everything to be perfect for her. And there’s this dumb part of me that’s scared she’ll change her mind. Like she might decide this is too much and call it off at the last minute. Can’t really say I’d blame her. All I’ve done is cause her extra stress by doing this, and it ain’t like I’m anyone special. Wouldn’t surprise me if she changed her mind.”

He’s quiet again for a moment. He doesn’t want to start rambling about how badly he wants to do all this. To marry her, to just be with her, forever, for however long they manage to stick around in the UG.

“…I just love her too damn much.”

Hearing Kariya admit to being nervous was a surprise to say the least. In the time Sho had known him, he wasn’t one to show concern about much, let alone anxiety. Still, Uzuki had always been the exception to that rule, and he had heard that weddings can be a stressful time for everyone involved.

He let Kariya finish gathering his thoughts before he responded. “Perfection is an admirable goal, but if I’ve learned anything down here, it’s that achieving it is like counting to infinity. It’s a limit you just can’t reach.” Sho puts a hand on Kariya’s shoulder, making sure he catches his friend’s eye as he continues. “What you two are doing isn’t easy. I’m sure she’s equivalently worried about all the things that might go wrong. But there’s no way to debug every error that might occur.”

Sho takes his hand off of Kariya, shrugging as he goes back into a more relaxed slump in the restaurant booth. “The optimal solution to this problem is for you two to be there for each other in the event that something does go wrong. And in the meantime, just keep loving each other. It’s been a successful strategy so far.”

Kariya had more or less kept his nervousness about the wedding to himself, only confiding in Uzuki. And he’d only done that because he knew how nervous she was. He thought it might help both of them feel better, knowing just how nervous they both were.

But now that it was so close to happening, he was getting more nervous by the day.

There had been no getting out of hanging out with Sho. He didn’t mind it, not really. It’s not like he didn’t want to. But he really didn’t want to admit to him how nervous he was.

“You still planning on showing up to the wedding?” he asks, grinning. He knew that he would, but he has to keep things light somehow. “You better not bail on us, ‘cuz Uzuki might give you hell if you do.”

There’s a laugh, though it’s a bit forced, as he wants to pretend he’s not secretly just as nervous as Uzuki is.

Sho and Kariya hadn’t seen each other in a while, and the mathematician wanted to catch up with his friend before the wedding. As soon as he arrived at “Glutton 4 Gluten”, however, Sho could tell something was off. He had been around Kariya long enough to know when he was trying to downplay his emotions, especially after everything that happened with the Shinjuku crew.

“I wouldn’t dare miss it. And you can tell her that my behavior parameters will be optimal; she won’t have to worry about me causing any destructive interference.” He returned Kariya’s smile, but his head tilted as he tried to get a read on what was going on inside his friend’s head. “That being said, I of course have a plan for every contingency. Just because I don’t intend to cause trouble doesn’t mean I’ll be unprepared. I even have an escape protocol for you, if you change your mind last minute.”

Sho leaned forward, his analytic mind overclocking as he examined Kariya’s face. “Is that what’s going on, Koki? Have you changed your mind?”

There's an envelope addressed to Sho, with an invitation to Uzuki and Kariya's wedding inside, along with a handwritten note.

"We both know you'll be there, but here's an invite anyway. You're a pretty cool dude once you get past the math and the trash, you know that? Thanks for all the help. And hey, you owe it to us to show up after some of the stuff you've pulled. ;)"

The handwriting switches at this point, from Kariya's to Uzuki's.

"I don't really know how we all ended up as friends, considering everything, but... I'm glad we are. I know you'll be there, but it really does mean a lot. Thank you for everything, and for being our friend."

Sho's smile grows wider as he reads through Kariya's portion of the note. "Did he really terminate his written statement with an emoticon?" As the handwriting switches, so too does Sho's expression; there's still a smile, but it's less mirthful and more heartfelt. He folds the letter back up and places it in a pocket in the lining of his jacket.

"...Dammit, now I have to get them a gift."
