Thinking about the quote

"Shrimps are bugs" or "Shrimps is bugs" or whatever it was.

This is making me question what people consider to be a bug. Not the "True Bugs", which is a scientific thing, but in the colloquial sense.

They have exoskeletons. But so do clams, and clams aren't bugs.

They have more than four legs, but so do tardigrades and they're not bugs

It can't be everything under arthropod because barnacles are arthropods. They're not bugs.

It's not wings because arachnids are considered bugs, and it can't be the eyes because there are eyeless spiders.

dont know if this answers your question, but shrimp are considered crustaceans

the dictionary definition of bugs says thst bugs are insects, yknow the whole six legged deal— so technically that definition wouldnt fit arachnids or millipedes/centipedes etc etc but calling them bugs just rolls off the tongue better. plus theyre just as fun to observe

uhh oops anyways. all insects are crustaceans but not all crustaceans are insects— so while shrimp are more closely related to insects than arachnids, they are still considered crustaceans, or less commonly known, decapods. hope this answered your question 👍

I've since identified it as a mountain katydid (checks out on location), but I still wanted to share bc it's the first time any of us had seen one. And also, interesting 💕

Yes, it's a mountain katydid! And a female, as you said. Males are more normal-katydid-shaped. The females have a surprise under their wings!

Wow, terrifying. They flash those spooky colors if they're alarmed. If I were a predator I would not eat her.
