House Update: We’ll be 90% finished with painting today! The last 10% will be a gradual process of caulking and touch-ups. Next, we’ll install our pocket door hardware, officially get all of our electric ready for action, and install our bathroom fixtures! We were hoping to use vintage pink and green toilets, but might change gears to prioritize lower water usage. This Fall we milled 3000 feet of cedar for our siding. The lumber was a little rough and had varying thicknesses + widths, so we put every single board through our wide belt, jointer, and table saw. Yes, labor intensive, but worth every dang splinter. This is what 1000 ft of white oak looks like. Milling our floors has been labor intensive. It’s the repetition that gets me, but I see the light at the end of the white oak tunnel. Win and I have been holding down the fort while Ivy recovers from kidney stone surgery. Yesterday, I milled white oak for our flooring and started painting the guest room. For the floors, I’m using a variety of widths. This is primarily an aesthetic choice that requires quite a bit of planning and organizing, but it’s also a way to reduce waste. I miss Ivy in the shop. So much to be thankful for ... despite Ivy waking up at 6am with kidney stone pain, rushing to the ER, and I couldn’t be with her because of COVID lockdown. So, I went home to twiddle my thumbs and wait for a phone update. She’s home with me now, and hoping to sleep it off. What a morning! We’re incredibly lucky and thankful to have family in our tight COVID bubble. We’ll see ya when we see ya, maybe on today, maybe for leftovers tomorrow. House Update: siding is nearly finished (we’ve had to take breaks for bad weather and shop work), drywall is finished, and we’re ready for paint! When we started Siosi in 2012, we supplemented our income by painting houses. After eight and a half years of woodworking full time, I finally made us a proper work bench. And on that bench are the coolest Elm boards I’ve ever seen + a record box in the works. We’ve always just made do with what we’ve had around: second hand tables, quick benches made of 2x4’s, or even working on the floor. We’re thinking about making a live edge dining table for our home (if we can squeak it into the budget) ... looking back on pics of our Set Table has me excited. @gobywalnut The hope is that our home will be a showroom of sorts. Anything that’s round, we shape by hand. Sharp tools get ‘er done faster, and leave behind a perfectly smooth, subtle texture. This morning I prioritized time at my computer to put this little video together.
