I received a fan mail that, in part, asked “…one thing that worries me about transitioning is my voice, and I have no idea where to find any good resources on how to adjust it. Do you have any idea where I could look?” I figured that this is information that a lot of people look for do I thought I would answer it as a post.
Here are a couple of posts that I have found helpful:
http://alicebitland.tumblr.com/post/91597332819/finding-your-female-voice
This post has some really detailed information and also included some specific muscle groups in your neck to exercise.
http://jojomirabelle.tumblr.com/post/114731932414/pro-tips-for-training-your-voice-as-a-trans-woman
This is another good post with ways to work on your voice.

I think this video was also helpful.
I have done a number of things that have helped me out a bit, though I certainly need a lot more work! If you put your hand on your throat and speak in your male voice you can feel where your larynx vibrates. As you change your voice towards a more feminin sound, you can feel the point at which your larynx vibrates rising higher as well. This is really helpful as you try to find your voice.
One of the first things I did was sing along to the radio while in the car (trust me, you do NOT want to hear that! Lol). I would try to match the voices on the song until I found a voice that I was comfortable with. When I found that, I would feel where my larynx was vibrating and remember that for later.
Another thing I will do in the care is talk to myself out loud in that voice. Sometimes I will listen to talk radio and repeat the things that female callers would say. One thing it does is it gives me practice saying a huge variety of words and phrases - things that I might not normally think to say and words that I might not regularly use so I wouldn’t normally get any practice making those sounds
I also will use the voice recorder on my phone your voice sounds different to other people than it does in your head. The best way to see how others might hear you is to record yourself speaking and listen back to it. This is great if you remember where your larynx was vibrating while singing. You can record that exact same voice and see just how it sounds. You can also use the voice recording to make fine adjustments to your voice to get it just where you want (and not the change to where your larynx vibrates).
One last tng that I have thought about doing, but haven’t tried yet, is to make phone calls using the new voice. I’m thinking about calling someplace like a fast food restaurant or drug store and ask a simple question like what time they close or something. This would give practice interacting with people in the new voice. I think that having already spoken with people will help reduce my nerves when interacting with people face to face.
I’m certainly no expert on the subject, these are just a few things that I have tried and have helped me. I hope this helps a bit!
