Description

Reginald Smee had an unfortunate upbringing that all began with the absence of his mother. She died when he was just a baby, leaving him with no proper memories of having a mother and stuck being raised by his father. His father was harsh and a drunk, lacking any warmth or empathy that Reggie desperately needed from a parent growing up. His father never talked about his mother, leaving him to assume things about her but never getting any true answers, except for one: one night when his father was drunk enough, he confessed that he was the reason his mother was dead. His father killed her. This was the beginning of the strained relationship between the two men. 

Reggie already knew his father was a killer, but this was different. He’d watched his father kill more than once before, and even helped him a couple of times, but only with strangers who seemingly deserved it: for example, a man who tried to steal from them and another man who almost crashed and destroyed their boat. That was the reason his father got away with killing so easily; they were men of the sea, always traveling on his beloved boat and never staying in one place for too long. Though Reggie craved warmth and stability, he grew fond of the ocean and the mysteries behind it. It was home — it was all he knew. 

His father’s drinking and his quick temper were eventually his downfall. One night while stopped in a random town, his father got into a bar fight that ended with both him and his opponent dead on the scene. Reggie considered it karma for killing his mother; had he had the chance, he would’ve killed his father himself one day. He had thought about it since the day he learned about his mother, but never had the right opportunity, or so he believed. Truthfully, he was probably just scared to take the initiative and do it. He’d seen what he was capable of and didn’t want to end up with the same fate as his mom and other victims. But now he was finally free. Barely 17 and only with a boat to his name, Reginald was left to fend for himself and figure out where to go from there — the world was his oyster. 

Unfortunately, the apple didn’t fall far from the tree. Killing was in his blood, and he was definitely ashamed of it. He’d helped his father kill before, and now he was continuing the cycle; drinking, making rash decisions, and ending up with blood on his hands and tears in his eyes. He was a monster, with no friends or family and guilt that ate him alive for years. It wasn’t until he was a little older that he eventually met the one person who filled that void and he felt genuine love for. Her name was Mollie, and she was everything that Reggie had been craving his entire life: warm, empathetic, and loving. She made him want to be a better man. It was a shame that, although he hated his dad for killing his mother, he essentially followed in his father’s footsteps. After mistakenly thinking Mollie had been cheating on him, he stabbed her to death. He had the love of his life’s blood on his hands, and now he was alone again. After he realized it was simply a misunderstanding, he was reminded that he was still a monster. Smee took off on his boat once again and never looked back, eventually ending up on Destiny Isle where he met Hook and his crew. Since then, he’s stayed on the isle and became Hook’s left-hand man.

Headcanons

Smee comes off so innocent and foolish that no one ever suspects him of having murdered people in his past. It’s part of what makes it so easy for him to get away with such terrible acts. 

Besides the boat, his father also left him with a knife collection

He also developed his father’s drinking habits, though he tends to be more emotional than angry when he drinks. 

Destiny Isle is probably the one place on land he’s lived at the longest, the other being when he met Mollie and stayed in her town for a few years.

He has a fear of being murdered after what happened to his father. He felt his dad received his karma, so does that mean Reggie will get the same fate someday? 

Has a tattoo on his chest in honor of his mother 

Hook is the only one in the gang who knows his true history. Smee is very loyal to him (somewhat because he respects him and somewhat because he fears him) and they both seem to understand each other despite how different they can be. He drives Hook crazy sometimes, but he knows they are practically like family. 

He has never had any proper education, which may also contribute to why so many people underestimate him.

Despite his dark past, he is a very gentle and empathetic man. He is also a known people-pleaser

“It’s the injustice of life that really does one in,” Hook concluded dejectedly. He had been ranting. He’d drunk just a few drops too many and gotten on a tangent, by the ending of which he couldn’t remember how he’d started. What he did know was that Reginald Smee was the only man who could stand to listen to his ramblings and give him understanding in return, a fact that meant his right-hand man was the only one Hook allowed himself to become this vulnerable with. Yet he wouldn’t stand to be the only one opening up like a moonflower at dusk. “Your turn,” he commanded, pointing his hook at the other man. “What injustice in your life has all but whittled you to the core?”

Smee nodded in agreement, silently wiping a tear from the corner of his eye with the hand that didn’t hold his flask. He always got weepy and emotional when he was intoxicated, a polar opposite of his father’s anger when he drank. Whether he was sober or not though, Smee was also known to be a good listener; he hadn’t been in Hook’s gang for long, but the leader trusted him enough to open up and be vulnerable like this. They had an interesting relationship from day one, which was partly what kept Smee on Destiny Isle rather than traveling through the sea more.

Reggie hadn’t expected the spotlight to be turned to himself next, watching as James’ intimidating hook pointed at him. During the short time he’s resided on the island so far, he had yet to open up about his past to Hook or the others in the gang. He was a mystery, but he felt he trusted the man enough to share his past with him while the two were alone. After all, James offered an interesting question to the shorter man, who was now thinking of all the injustices he’d personally experienced. The former sailor sniffled, reaching for a tissue with one hand and offering the flask to Hook with the other. “Injustices have plagued me since I was young,” he began, blowing his nose and tossing the used tissue in the nearby trash. “It’s how I ended up here in the first place.” There was a chance that opening up could potentially change the dynamic between the two men, but he’d had enough alcohol already to not worry about that too much. “I lost everyone close to me in my life, and only one of their deaths was justified… One of them was my own fault.” He’d never said that aloud before. “... I was an idiot and brought the final injustice upon myself.”
