You Count - Advocacy

You live in your community, and in the wider world. You see the issues. Is there something you want to change? Are you passionate about a cause? (Maybe you want to save the tigers or hope to have a new biking/hiking trail built, as just a few examples.)

If you have a cause, you might want to consider engaging in advocacy. Advocacy is the act of supporting a particular cause, and it’s one way that you can try to effect change.

What does advocacy look like? Here are a few examples –

Join. Find an organization or club that focuses on the issue and join. Share. Inform others about the cause, share your involvement on social media or by word-of-mouth, wear a t-shirt with a slogan from the cause. Organize. Search for others who share your cause to form a group or take action. Take Action. Meet with local leaders, write to Congress, write a letter to the editor, lobby, hold a peaceful demonstration or rally, and more.

Newsflash: Blog Move

We've really had a lot of fun with tumblr, but unfortunately we haven't been able to get it to play nice with those filters we are required to have in the Teen areas of our libraries, so it is time to try something new!

Beginning January 1, 2016, we are moving to WordPress, which will embed our blog right onto the Sno-Isle Libraries website!  It's not up quite yet, but you can bookmark https://blog.sno-isle.org/teens/ so you don't miss out on any of our news, book gossip, volunteer opportunities, or sweet giveaways!

Weekend Book Giveaway: Hotel Ruby

I didn't have anything particularly well suited to the holidays, but none the less, this haunting thriller sounds delightful. This week we are giving away a beautiful brand new copy of Hotel Ruby by Suzanne Young.

Looking to volunteer? Check out your local hospital or senior living facility. These organizations often have information about volunteer opportunities on their websites, including specific opportunities and guidelines (like age requirements). But if they don’t have a webpage about volunteering, don’t hesitate to give them a call to ask about the possibility.

Top 3 Right Now: Brin

This week we are featuring Brin from Marysville, who has some great picks for you!

"Currently, my three favorite books are Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Garman, and An Abundance of Catherines, by John Green.

The first of the three, Fangirl is my all time favorite book. The first time I read it, sometime last January, I completely fell in love with every thing about it. It' about an eighteen year old girl named Cath. Throughout the novel she deals with college, mental illness, and family. I think the biggest part of what made me love it so much was Cathy, and how honest and relatable she is. 

The second of the three is The Ocean at the End of the Lane, by Neil Garman. This one was entrancing. It's about a young boy and his magical neighbors fighting an evil force from “The Old World”. As I read, I was completely entrapped within the story. There was just something so amazing and child-like about the story.

The last of the three, An Abundance of Katherines by John Green, is a great book about romance and friendship. The main character, Collin, is trying to formulate a theorem to predict the course of any relationship. He ends up in a new town with his best friend. In the end, he realizes that life is unpredictable and that every moment is a new adventure. I love how unique the story is, all of the characters are completely original and special."

You Count - You Tell It

Last week I read a story in the Everett Herald that made me remember why it’s so important that we have the freedom to report the news and share our opinions without censorship (http://www.heraldnet.com/article/20151212/NEWS02/151219727). I don’t know about you, but I regularly read the news online (and several blogs) so that I can be aware of what’s going on in the world. But if some organization, whether a government or some other entity, limited the information that was shared, it’d be really difficult to be informed about the world, and even more challenging to call for reform.

 Why am I sharing this with you? Because one of the ways you can make a difference is if you tell the story…if you help ensure that we know what’s going on in your communities and in the world.

How can you do this? Here are a few possibilities:

Join your school newspaper.

See if you can start a teen journalism column in your local newspaper.

Start your own newspaper.

Start a blog or vlog.

Readers’ Corner: It Happened to Me...

This week’s featured booklist is probably one of my favorites. I’ve read so many of the books on this list, and I’ve loved them all. These are all memoirs of teen experiences, and they range from very familiar stories to lives so extraordinary we can hardly comprehend them. 

These are powerful, compelling stories. Sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes hilarious, and sometimes both at the same time. I highly recommend reading something from this list and living inside someone else’s world for a while.

Tween STEAM Club: Physics 3:30 PM - Granite Falls Library

Accelerate your learning and launch your creativity with a fun mixture of physics experiments. This session is for youth with extra potential energy, we can help them convert it into cool science learning that is fun and hands-on! During this session we will discuss scientific method and explore some of the basic laws of physics concepts such as acceleration, drag, pressure, potential energy, kinetic energy, Newton's Laws, leverage and much more!

Minecraft Mondays 4:00 PM - Edmonds Library

Work together or on your own to build the best Minecraft structure. Prizes to the winners! Space is limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Star Wars Week: Fold with the Force & Star Wars Photo Booth 4:30 PM - Marysville Library

Master the Folds of origami and create your own Star Wars characters with paper and markers. We will use designs from “The Strange Case of Origami Yoda” and Tom Angleberger's other books. Come dressed as your favorite Star Wars character for our Star Wars Photo Booth. You might even have the opportunity to pose with wookies, Jedi knights, stormtroopers and other costume-wearing volunteers from the Rebel Alliance and 501st Legion, local Star Wars costuming groups. For 4th to 12th grades. Marysville Large Meeting Room. Funding by the Gellerson Memorial Programming Endowment and Friends of the Marysville Library.

Join us in the Teen Alcove for some fun with a new card game: We Didn't Playtest This At All! Learn the rules, play a few hands, and win snacks/prizes through participation. Open to students grade 6 and up. Supported by Friends of the Arlington Library.

Calling all teen writers! Looking for a supportive place to share your writing? Join the Junior Monroe Wednesday Writers and get feedback and guidance from your peers, a published author and library staff. All writers in grades 6-12 are welcome.

Rockin' Rollercoasters 6:30 PM - Lynnwood Library

Students learn about potential and kinetic energy as they engineer a rollercoaster of recycled materials and test their tracks. For tweens ages 9-13. Space is limited to 28 participants and will be filled on a first-come-first served basis.
