Ceramics for the Self RISD News

When grad student Soe Yu Nwe MFA 15 CR presented her latest pieces of ceramics at a crit last week, it was clear that she has hit her stride. Her breathtaking new body of work includes recent experiments with organic materials cast in glass – snake bones, a rose, a lock of her own hair – along with porcelain she saggar-fires with wood chips to create a range of gradated grays. The work “explores interiority as a feminine aesthetic,” the artist explains.

“It’s all in the air – visual depth, clarity and simplicity,” exclaims Professor Larry Bush (shown with Nwe in the top photo). 

The second-year grad student also showed intricate, layered drawings; a visual poem made of branch-like porcelain sticks (bottom photo) and dense porcelain sculpture (top photo).

“There’s a lot of fire in this work,” notes Associate Professor and Department Head Katy Schimert. “You’ve begun developing a new language.”

Art major Soe Yu Nwe, '13, adds to her string of undergraduate achievements with the Michigan Ceramic Art Association's 2012 Scholarship Award. The statewide competition, intended to encourage serious students of ceramics, included a $1,000 prize.

Soe Yu Nwe's journey from her home country of Burma, (also known as Myanmar) to the United States in 2009 brought her to Albion College, a liberal arts college in southern Michigan. Like many Burmese students, Nwe (who goes by the nickname Joy) came to the U.S. to study biology. She found her true calling, she says, when she took a ceramics class in her first semester.
