Okay let’s get controversial again, I guess! My personal headcanons about Joseph, the voice, and his prophecies. This is mostly based in Joseph’s recollection of his childhood in The Book of Joseph. As always, I don’t expect other people to adopt this as their own headcanon unless they want to. I won’t hold anyone else’s portrayal of Joseph to my own personal headcanons.

CWs for: religious trauma, hallucinations and dissociation, child abuse

I don’t have a specific diagnosis for Joseph, but I don’t think he’s hearing the voice of god. I don’t think he’s making it up though; he does hear a voice, and he does believe that it’s god speaking to him. I think Joseph is having auditory hallucinations in tandem with dissociative episodes, all of this formed/triggered by his trauma stemming from childhood abuse. It seems to me in the FC6 DLC, Collapse, that Greg Bryk voices Joseph and the Voice, so it isn’t an external voice of god that he hears but an internal one. Joseph experiences this as an external voice, but it isn’t actually coming from a source other than his own mind. I think this voice has been shaped by his abusive upbringing, one that utilized religion (specifically Christianity) to justify itself. This is, as far as I’m aware, what Joseph recalls in The Book of Joseph that was published with collector’s editions of FC5. His abusive father would beat him and his siblings and drunkenly shout Bible verses at them. Joseph first hears the voice when he’s being physically assaulted and abused by his father, and the voice later tells him that he and his brothers have a destiny and a future . After a long period of silence, he hears the voice again after being assaulted on his way to work. When he hears the voice, there seems to be some external event that triggers it. Because of this I think the voice is an auditory hallucination Joseph experiences in connection with a form of dissociation during high stress events, particularly violent and abusive ones. This is, of course, arm chair psychology. I’m not an expert and Joseph Seed isn’t a real person, but this is to the best of my knowledge a rough idea of what I think is happening when Joseph hears the voice. 

Joseph interprets his auditory hallucinations through a religious lens because that is what he is familiar with; it’s a framework he already uses and understands, so when his mind creates the voice, it does so through this framework. I can’t find the specific term for this phenomenon, but I’ll use a similar concept to explain some of my thinking: apparently, when you imagine a face or see a person in a dream, that face/person is an amalgamation of people you’ve already seen because the brain isn’t capable of forming a totally new face/person without any references. I think a similar phenomenon is occurring with Joseph and the voice. He doesn’t have a frame of reference for mental health or mental illness, for hallucination or dissociation. Like many people who experience these symptoms Joseph is not fully capable of understanding that what he’s hearing isn’t real but an illusion created by his own mind without some intervention and psychiatric care.

one thing i think the rpc generally but especially the fc5 rpc NEEDS to understand is that the concepts of bodily autonomy and consent don’t begin and end within the confines of sex and sexuality. torture is ALSO a violation of consent and bodily autonomy! drugging people is ALSO a violation of consent and bodily autonomy! denying people the right to choose what happens to their bodies, denying people the right to say no to ANY action done to their body or ignoring when they say no, those are violations of consent and bodily autonomy. the far cry series is chalk full of this and whatever your personal opinions are on the relative bad-ness of certain actions, that doesn’t change the fundamentals of what bodily autonomy and consent are.

ive had a pretty stressful few days but hopefully my muse will come back and ill have time to write. ill probably be a bit busy, since the foster-to-adopt cat we have just had a kitten, so we’ll need to help care for them both. im gonna be more active on my oc multi, @cerasiium , if you wanna follow/find me there while my brain recovers from being chronically on fire <3
