Welp, I gotta make a post about this, huh
Thoughts on this:
1. If you've somehow been living under a rock and don't know what NFTs are: first of all, I envy you. Second, here's a two hour video from Dan Olson explaining the problem with NFTs and blockchain stuff in general. I'm assuming many of you have seen this before, but I'm not going to take the time to explain this shit when Dan did it better
2. Penders is absolutely 100% wording things in a way that will piss Sonic fans off and get him more attention on Twitter. "Green Knuckles." "Julie-Su AKA Shade." It's bait. Don't fall for it. Don't engage with him directly. Don't go into his mentions trying to argue copyright law with him. You are not going to win, and you're just giving him what he wants
3. One hundred thousand fucking dollars
4. I have to repeat that. One hundred thousand dollars. EACH. For a digital certificate of authenticity for a set of PNGs of some Penders art. I have to wonder if that price tag is also bait. (It's definitely got people - including me - talking about it.) However, in the insane intersection of the speculative art market and tech libertarians that NFTS exist in, that's honestly not that high of a price tag. Ancient memes like Disaster Girl and Charlie Bit My Finger have been turned into NFTs and sold for as high as $500k and $761k, respectively in the speculative market. (Of course, that's in highly volatile crypto bucks, not real money.) I wouldn't be surprised if Penders figures that, as a piece of Sonic history, he sees his work as genuinely worth that much compared to other things that have been minted as NFTs to earn a quick buck
5. Possibly most perplexing about this: Penders says that he understands peoples' concerns about NFTs and even agrees to some extent, but also that "other matters take precedence." That matter apparently isn't the money, despite appearances, and in fact he claims that his lawyers were involved in the decision making process here. I genuinely have no idea what he's getting at here, or what kind of 5-D chess he could be trying to play
6. The icing on the cake, though, is that even some of the last remaining people who had the guy's back seem to be disappointed in him for this, judging by his Twitter replies. He somehow keeps finding ways to make his public image worse and worse
Remembering when he drew me a freebie that I won from him, he pulled an excuse out of his ass that he viewed it as a political drawing... It's completely viable to presume he does this on the regular whenever he's confronted on anything to try to weasel his way out of things, even if it's thinly veiled
