One of the things I love about The Mentalist is that Jane never becomes a hero. When someone draws a gun he is visibly scared. He gets behind cops in dangerous situations the first chance he gets. He doesn't decide to put on a cape and run into a gunfight or wrestle with knives. There are times he has to step up and do it but it's not something he normally does. And it's not weakness, knowing Jane as we do, it's all down to logic. He's an untrained civilian and he knows that it's better to let the pros do what they're trained to do. Zero toxic masculity on that front

one thing I absolutely love about the mentalist (among the many things or just about everything really) is how Jane's constantly smiling at people

you don't see him be usually grumpy and arrogant like most Sherlock based characters out there, he kinda exudes so much warmth despite all the things he's been through and I get it, his previous profession required that he emulate this fake friendliness and kindness just to seem more believable and thus make more money, but as we watch him (after he's left all of that behind him) his kindness seems genuine and beautiful to look at.

he's literally such a sunshine, I love his smile so much.
