Cad shrugged. “I mean, it’s all in the pursuit of justice… and Evander wasn’t really a good person anyway. It could be the lead we need to pull this conspiracy apart. But I get it if it’s too weird for you.”
“A little... But I’ll think about it.” Spencer offered up. It was the best she could do given the circumstances.
“This can not be happening.” Dawsyn muttered before switching incoherently to her native tongue. This year was going to be one boring mess.
“Are you... okay?” Spencer raised a quizzical eyebrow at the other brunette who was clearly upset about something, obvious by how she went off in Bulgarian. “Имаш ли нужда от помощ? — God, I hope I pronounced that even somewhat decently.” She muttered the last bit under her breath.
cadmus-white:
“You think the Wolf had ulterior motives for choosing Evander?” Cad frowned. “Like, they knew each other, or Evander screwed them over, or something?” It was an interesting thought, and it could lead to the Wolf’s true identity… but Cad wasn’t optimistic.
“I got no fucking clue.” Spencer shook her head. She had never really met Evander. All she knew about him was through the Gossip Column and what she’d heard in the hallways. That wasn’t really enough to go by. “Might have to be something else for us to look into... I’d say I’d hack his email and such for clues; but it feels sorta wrong hacking a dead guy’s accounts.”
cadmus-white:
“Well he attacked me and failed,” Cad shrugged. “Maybe the Wolf saw that as a failure?”
“Yeah; but that still doesn’t answer my question... Why Evander? Why have him go after you as opposed to someone else?” Spencer mused aloud. It didn’t make sense to her. She knew why the Wolf had targeted Cadmus. He was trying to take them down. That made sense. But Evander? What was his connection in all of this? “What made him so special? That’s what I don’t get.”
cadmus-white:
“Fine, fine,” Cad waved her concerns away. I mean, he was going to die anyway- he was freaked out only briefly by Evander. Obviously he was curious as to how the Wolf had managed to kill him, but it wasn’t his main concern yet. “I wonder how they did it. Kill Evander, I mean.”
Spencer didn’t want to think about what she’d heard regarding the murder at graduation last year. It was too awful. “I know all the faculty were trying to keep the details hush-hush; and I don’t blame them... You wouldn’t want it getting out that a student was murdered at your school... But my question is: why Evander?”
Spencer had been glued to the news reports covering the storm damage in Texas, especially in her hometown of Galveston and its surrounding area. And while she knew her family was safe, she was waiting for an update on their home and friends. Nothing had come via text or phone call; so she figured it was because cell service was still spotty. Checking her email, she was relieved to finally see something from her dad. She was completely focused on reading the long update from him that she didn’t even realize someone was trying to speak to her. “Hmm? Oh, uh, sorry... Did you want something?”
cadmus-white:
“That’s the plan,” Cad grinned slightly, sliding his hands into his pockets and rocking back and forth slightly. “Though we lost an ally in Alice. Still, she escaped this place, good on her. And we should be careful, since clearly the Wolf wants me dead.”
Spencer chewed at her lip. “Yeah... I, uh, I heard about that... How you holding up, Caddie?” She hadn’t gotten a chance to talk to her new friend since the events of graduation. Things had been crazy; and they were only gonna get crazier.
cadmus-white:
“Yeah, that really sucks,” Cad’s mouth moved into a sympathetic frown. “I can’t imagine what that’s like. Here we’re pretty safe from natural disasters, excluding you know who.”
“Yeah...” Spencer let out a heavy sigh. “So you and I are gonna put an end to it before my sister starts here next year, right?”
cadmus-white:
“It’s temporary,” Cad shrugged. Like me he added in his head. “And yeah, it was a pretty good Summer. How about you? Had a good few months away from all this?”
“I can honestly say, I’m glad to be back. Home’s... well you’ve heard about Harvey, right?” Spencer had been paying attention to the news more than anything the past few days. And honestly, she was scared. “My family’s safe and all. They’re staying with relatives up north; but it’s still rough. Kinda glad to not be dealing with all that right now.”
“Oh, hey, let me get that,” Cad rushed to grab the door for the other person.
Realizing who it was who rushed to get the door for her, a smiled widened across Spencer’s face. “Cadmus White. Well I’ll be damned... Summer sure did change you. Blonde, uh, suits you.” She laughed, not quite sure what to think of her friend’s choice of hair color. She’d definitely need some time to adjust to it.
cadmus-white:
“I still don’t follow,” Cad crossed his arms thoughtfully. “Why would they want revenge on kids like Alice and I? Weston and Riley?”
Spencer shrugged. “Maybe they don’t want revenge on those kids specifically. Maybe it’s Briarwood Prep as a whole.” She offered up. “They could’ve been wronged somehow before starting their column; and they use the degradation of others to cope with whatever happened. The bullied has now become the bully, so to speak.” She knew more than she was letting on, of course; but she couldn’t lead Cadmus down her trail. She had to just spew variations of the truth to potentially help with his cause.
cadmus-white:
“Crap,” Cad bit his lip. “So that’s 75% of the school we have to look into. I just don’t get what motive somebody with that much money could have for doing this… Boredom? Even if they hate the nightlife, People like Alice and I, we’re not exactly party animals.”
“Boredom could be part of it, I suppose... The Wolf could just think so lowly of themselves that they need to degrade others to feel joy.” Spencer suggested. “Or the column could be about something else entirely... Revenge?”
cadmus-white:
“Well, that wasn’t it in Alice’s case,” Cad frowned. “But you’re right. I guess they could be using multiple means. But that means they have resources- they’d have to be pretty wealthy and or powerful.”
“I’d say both.” Spencer commented. “They’ve already proved their power; and given the fact nearly 75% of the students here come from families with a net worth greater than $5.5 mil, I’d go out on a limb and say whoever is behind the column has money to burn.” In fact, she knew they did.
cadmus-white:
“Hacking our texts was eliminated because of Alice,” Cadmus mused. “Spies within the school, access to the school’s camera systems, hidden mics…” He looked up. “Anything sound plausible so far?”
Spencer raised an eyebrow. “Why was it eliminated?” She knew hacking text messages, phone calls, emails, etc. was definitely something the column was capable of and most likely was doing in some of the cases. “Why couldn’t the Wolf hack us?” She inquired, curious to know Cad’s thoughts and knowledge. “It’s just as likely a possibility as them having spies and/or bugs.”
cadmus-white:
Cad grunted, not thinking much about Gigi or Dean. “So… “ he pulled a piece of paper triumphantly from his files. “These were my theories on how the Wolf is monitoring us.”
Spencer glanced at the piece of paper in Cadmus’s hand as the boy pulled it from his files. She already knew some of the ways the gossip column got their information; but she had to admit to being quite curious to see whether or not Cad had figured any of them out. “Let’s here ‘em, Cad.” She stated, figuring she’d let him read off his list rather than take the paper from him.
