The “Scrap” table is shipping to TN today! I made this table from scrap pieces of wood I had kept in my shop - maple, pine, barnwood, poplar, walnut, and cedar - turned out really cool! www.creeknuts.com #creeknuts #flytying #flytyingtables #flytyingbenches #trout #flyfishing #royalcoachman
From The Tying Bench: Intruder Style Flies
In addition to tying tube flies, I’ve also been tying up intruder style flies using shanks with stinger hooks, and various color combinations of marabou.

Although I love the look of these flies, I find myself gravitating more to tube flies due to the flexibility in sizing, weighting, etc.
From the tying bench: DIY Tube Flies
Wanted to try my hand at tying tube flies but didn’t want to invest in all the materials and tools in case I didn’t like it.

The DIY approach entailed using qtip tubes and cutting down a bicycle wheel spoke as the tube holder for my vice.
Conclusion: I’m getting the proper tube holder and tube materials to do it right.
First tube fly for Steelhead
My first tube fly. Discovered a low cost way of at least trying out the tying style. A Qtip tube cut to length and an old bicycle wheel spoke as the mandrill to hold in place on my vice while tying.
I think I’m hooked on tying the style of fly in addition to intruder style flies on a shank over tying on traditional up eye salmon hooks.
Tying an Intruder for Steelhead
The rains have started here in Oregon and the rivers are on the rise. I have yet to experience my first steelhead encounter and figured I’d try and improve my chances by fishing some intruder style patterns.
I’ve heard purple and black are a deadly combination for steelhead so I figured why not.
We shall see…
I've heard it said that catching a steelhead is a religious experience... So far I haven't found religion....
Orange Heron size 3/0
Syd Glasso’s Orange Heron is a fly that I will never tire of. I’ve posted it here before, and I’m sure I’ll post another, probably sooner than later!
Pink and Blue
Here’s a somewhat fancy hairwing tied mainly with materials that were given to me.
