Charlie Dean has been named England's captain for their next three ODI matches against Ireland, after taking over for injured Nat Sciver-Brunt earlier this summer.
From Stand-In to Full-Time Charge
Dean was one of the first to come into the fray when Sciver-Brunt was absent from the white-ball vice-captaincy in England's series against New Zealand. She left enough of an impression in that role that the ECB have given her the keys to Ireland for the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026, after Sciver-Brunt missed the tournament due to a calf injury and was replaced with a very different team.
Head coach Charlotte Edwards said the appointment was a reward for a job well done this season and was a "perfect way to end the summer for the team".

A squad is in a transition.A squad is transitioning.
The series follows a hectic summer in which England suffered a shock defeat to Australia in the T20 World Cup final at Lord's before narrowly losing a one-off Test there to India. The Hundred is also in the programme, giving England the opportunity to turn to some younger faces while some of the older boys and girls get some rest.
The absence of Sciver-Brunt, as she continues to manage a troublesome injury in her left calf, and Danni Wyatt-Hodge, as she is dealing with her fitness, is yet another factor to consider. Sophie Ecclestone, Lauren Bell and Amy Jones have all missed the squad altogether and that has given the lesser experienced players a chance to put themselves forward. Alice Capsey, who was reserve wicketkeeper at the recent T20 World Cup, takes the bat in hand for Jones.
Two of those who have been in the mix for rare chances include Charis Pavely with her maiden ODI debut in mind as she is 2 in 2 in T20Is and has just made her first two appearances in the ODI format against New Zealand, and Tilly Corteen-Coleman, who has made her first two ODI appearances – also against New Zealand – and looks to add a third starting for the Lions in the 40-over format. After a year-long hiatus from the game due to a lower back injury, Ryana MacDonald-Gay is back to the fold.

There are three dates for the series, starting in Leicester on 1 September, followed by Derby on 3 September and Worcester on 6 September. England will be coming into the winter in search of their first ODI series win since Dean took charge — a sign of how the side will be geared up for the ICC Women's World Cup next year.
