“I know, I know…” Rose sighed, returning John’s kiss, “He’s just too big to be jumping all over Abby.”

The little girl in question simply looked thrilled, though, babbling and reaching for the disciplined Russ.  “When she’s a little bigger, they’re gonna be the best of friends.” The blonde grinned, wrapping her arms around John’s waist.

Abby waved her hands around, making a noise of frustration when Russ didn’t come running back for her. She already loved the big furry thing that insisted on bathing her feet every chance it go.

“Oh he’ll be back Abby, don’t worry.” John laughed as he kissed Rose’s head and went back to making supper. Abby wasn’t satisfied with that answer, however -- she started crying.

The Questions We Call Home || Closed

It had been two months since James turned sixteen.

Two months since he’d run away from the orphanage.

Well. “Orphanage.” They cared less about adopting kids out and more about turning them into tools for the government -- boys and girls alike. And, as horrible as it may have sounded, John wouldn’t fight for his country. Couldn’t fight for his country.

And so he ran. He ran to avoid the army. He ran to keep from dying on a battlefield.

He ran to live.

Which was what made his current situation all the more ironic.

It had been nearly a week since his last real meal at an underground shelter. Four days since he’d eaten the last of the scraps he’d found in the trash. And he was starving. Actually, literally starving. The world was spinning before his eyes as he staggered along under some misguided conception that he still had something to escape from -- he had long ago left civilization behind.

There probably wouldn’t even be anyone to find his body.

It was with that thought that he finally collapsed, curling up tight on the ground, allowing the darkness to engulf him.

Better to die free than be killed as a tool for the country.

rosetylerthevaliantchild: “What?!” Rose shouted, scurrying from the bathroom to the kitchen– where their beloved husky was jumping up to show love to their daughter. “Russ–!” As much as Abby was enjoying it, Rose scooted their dog away from the giggling child, bopping him on the noise. “Bad dog,” She frowned, before shooting an apologetic look to John.

Russ looked horribly put out as he slunk away, whimpering. He just wanted to play with the little human. John got the feeling he had been feeling a little neglected since they’d brought Abby home. He wanted to be part of the love too..

John kissed Rose with a smile. “He just wants to give her love.” But he was a big old husky and Abby was a little baby. There was too much risk of her getting hurt for them to be comfortable.

“No, no no no Russ,” John said quickly, chasing the dog away from Abby, who was sitting in her bouncy seat on the floor while John cooked. He turned away -- and was distracted again when Abby let out a shrieking giggled. He whirled back around to see Russ licking Abby’s face. “No, Russ.” He chased the dog away again, sighing. “Rose!”

A Twisted Mind

So you know what you all should do? Follow my amazing girlfriend and her amazing Rose. This is just such a unique take on a Rose -- if you're not following her you're probably missing out on something very important. Especially if you're like and enjoy twisted, torturous storylines.

"What else am I supposed to do?" Abby murmured, wiping her eyes, "Sorry, Dad... I'm scared and I'm upset and I... I don't know what to do anymore..."

"…How about some hot chocolate?" He asked desperately.

"No, Dad, it's fine..." Abby shook her head, leaving her parents' room, "Sorry I bothered you..."

"You didn’t — Abigail — damn it," John hissed as he went after her. "Abby, stop.”

"Yeah, but it is important to me." Abby muttered, standing on shaking legs, "'M just gonna go, 'cause you're not really helping me and I'd rather cry by myself in my room than listen to how wrong I am."

"Abigail please sit down," John said quietly. He wanted to help. But he also didn’t want Abby to hate her mother. "Please."

"I know... I know that but... She kept it from me. You kept it from me. How is it just one mistake if it's so shameful?" Abby murmured, "A mistake is like... Me breakin' a dish or the time you dented the car... Not... Not bein' a whore. She didn't accidentally sell sex to people. She did it on her own. She met you that way. It's not a fuckin' mistake..."

"Stop cursing," John said firmly. "I don’t care if you’re sixteen, you’re too young to be saying those words. We didn’t hide anything from you, we didn’t tell you because it didn’t matter. Because it was twenty years ago and your mother’s accomplished so much since then and that should be more important to you than something she did when she was nineteen."

Taking in that information, Abby sat on the edge of her parents' bed, tears dripping from her eyes. "Dad... I... I always wanted to grow up to be like Mum... But... I don't know if I can. I don't want blokes to treat me like that... Adam told me I was just a 'whore's kid,' that's it." Wiping her eyes, Abby wrapped her arms around herself. "...I don't wanna be like Mum."

"That was one part of your mother’s life, Abigail.” John couldn’t stand the thought of Abby losing respect for Rose. She deserved so much. “One part. Over twenty years ago. You’re not a whore’s kid, you are the daughter of a very successful woman who took a life of almost nothing and made it into something wonderful. You are the daughter of a woman who loves with all her heart, who would sacrifice her life for the people she cares about. You’re just focusing on one mistake.”

"Yeah, but that's how you met her, isn't it?" Abby spat, almost completely ignoring what her father was saying, "You paid her for sex. That's how you met. You didn't answer me the first time, so I can only assume I'm right."

"I didn’t pay her for anything." John didn’t mean to lose his temper, but he did. Just a little. "We met through her job, yes, but I didn’t have sex with her. I met her and we talked. All night. That’s it."

"I'm sixteen, I can say what I bloody want." Abby frowned, wiping away fresh tears, "And yes it does. It does 'cause you lied. You kept it from me. I looked up to Mum... I defended her to the kids in primary school... And they were /right/. She is a whore."

"She is not.” John didn’t mean to be short, but he hated it when anyone called Rose a whore, even Rose herself. Hearing Abby saying it…. “She made mistakes when she was younger. That doesn’t make any of her accomplishments since then any less. She went to school, she graduated with one of the hardest possible degrees, she’s successful, she’s a wonderful mother and wife. And she loves you more than anything in this world. More than me, even.”

"It matters to me." Abby pointed out, "Mum was... Mum was a fucking prostitute and you never told me? 'S that how you met her? 'Cause she was a whore?"

"Don’t use that language," John said firmly. "It’s your mother’s past. It doesn’t have anything to do with who she is now. It doesn’t change who she is now.”

"I just... I never thought Mum was..." Abby sat up on her own, wiping her eyes, "Adam said she was a whore. Is that true?"

Damn it damn it damn it. "Abby...it doesn't matter now. None of it matters now. It's in the past."

Abby sat cuddled in his lap for a few minutes, just crying her eyes out, soaking his shirt with her tears. Finally, though, she spoke. "...Dad? Did he really... Touch Mum like that? Did he really do that to her?"

John did his best not to react. "Sweetie please don't ask about that stuff." It was Rose's past. And Abby didn't need those images of her mother in his head.

"I know..." Abby murmured. But that didn't change the fact that it had happened... Her parents loved her and cared for her and would tear the world apart to protect her but still, she had been kidnapped. She felt like a child again, terrified of monsters under her bed. "...I'm scared, Daddy."

"I know, love." And John hated that. God he hated it so much. He wished Rose was here. She always knew exactly what to say. "It's going to be okay though. I promise."
