In Portuguese, there are actually 2 generic words for “dog”: cão (which is listed in the map) and cachorro.
Plus there’s the toddler word for it: auau (which is the onomatopoeia for the sound a dog makes). ;)
The word for dog in Latin was canis, which is why the scientific name for dogs and wolves is Canis lupus.
Ah yes, baby names! In Swedish, it’s “vovve” which is obviously also onomatopoeic.
