My new short film ‘Filthy but Fine’ is out today.
¡POST-CREDITS SEQUENCE (not a minute of credits, I’m not a monster)! Full screen, HD, and loud, please and thank you. Contains cartoon violence. Happy Halloween!
Not Stress Baal, but whatever. I also make stuff like this!
What’s up, Korea! Let’s smash that minion! <3 :D
Intimate Threads sent me her incredible Stress Baal crochet, so I had to get him moving a bit. Welcome to the desktop squad, buddy. And, since friends are better than money… Better than ~ten bucks a day, anyways, I’m making Stress Baal free on iOS (been free on Google Play for a long time cause there’s no fighting you pirates). Probably forever. But get it now in case I change my mind.
lml ‘OwO’ lml
BAAL OF YARN. You guys, I am flipping out. Jaime over at Intimate Threads made a little Baal!
Booj moy! Thanks, Russia! Any oligarchs want to fund an ad-driven sequel? Gazprom? That guy Putin does judo with? TATU?
Second biggest territory for SB’s latest free run is, no joke, Ukraine. Lot of stress out east, you guys.
Believe in yourself, little hero, your guts are more elastic than you imagine. Getting more emails asking where the ‘Stress Baal’ sequel ‘Fuzz Baal’ is. Still no plans, unless there’s venture capital on tumblr?
I think I may be obsessed with this app…
Yas! Fanart!
Don’t think I’ve posted this one before. And Stress Baal’s free. itunes. Google Play
Found this old .gif I never did anything with. Grumpy cat was still fresh when I was working on the game. Couldn’t quite do the math to get this whole thing working right, though.
Above, an old Baal sketch.
I’ve put this off long enough, but it’s time I addressed it. In late June, I received an email from the prospective client of an app development studio. He wanted to know what my experience had been like working with these people. Thing was, I had never heard of the company. But sure enough, they were including Stress Baal as part of their portfolio on their site (I’m omitting their name because a couple weeks ago, they removed it of their own accord).
Gallingly, the company also claimed to this prospective client that I had come to them with nothing more than the idea for a stress relieving app and they conceived of the game and even the character. No doubt they also recognize the little tributes they placed throughout the game to my indie animator friends like Julia Pott, Pat Smith, and Peter Ahern. AND to put a cherry on this sundae of bullshit, they went so far as to impersonate me on the phone to the client. He literally emailed me “I need to know if that was actually you I just spoke to on the phone.” We had not spoken. And it got creepier, but that’s an even longer story.
So, I want to lay out some things. Every single frame of Stress Baal was drawn by me, Arthur Metcalf. Every interaction was designed by me (I have the massive google spreadsheet to prove it). The game mechanic (the way the animations are strung together) was my invention. I wrote and designed the randomized about page (it’s never the same twice) and the font. Even the goddamned internal file naming conventions. I hired a company, now bankrupt, called Social Jitney (also known as Avenue Social) to do the actual coding of the game. The only thing in the game that wasn’t wholly my idea was the two finger touch gesture to return to the main menu. That was a suggestion from Social Jitney. Thanks, guys.
If you hire an app development studio off the internet, be VERY careful. Social Jitney did the job I hired them for. But I seem to have gotten extraordinarily lucky in that. Googling to see if this new studio was in any way related showed me that I seem to have dodged a bullet.
Anyways, I’m not sure what these liars were thinking. An email I personally manage is right there on the about pages for the game in both the App Store and Google Play. And the game and I are easily googled. But they lied about their role in the game and they went so far as to impersonate me to back up those lies. So, and this is the reason I’m writing all this, if anyone’s got a question about Stress Baal, hit me up here or at [email protected].
Oh, and if you ever speak to Arthur Metcalf on the phone, I should sound like this, the first voice on this video, or Baal if I’m feeling sassy. That’s me, too.
Swing and a miss! I get emails about this almost every day. Above is an idle animation from my game, Stress Baal. You can interrupt it at any time, but if you let it play out, Baal attempts to break out of his prison with a hammer, a sledgehammer, a chainsaw, and then double chainsaws, at which point there is an “error.” The error, though, is the joke. I’m not a programmer but I tried to ape some code-ish stuff I learned on a render farm and reading, but not understanding, the more esoteric xkcd’s. Essentially every gag in Stress Baal is about subverting expectation. So here, you’d expect Baal to splatter himself into some Mortal Kombat puddle with those chainsaws bouncing off the screen. Instead, I give you “itseverywhereohgodohgoditseverywhwere,” “boundariesofgoodtaste,” and “sudo mopsandbucket.” As with the other times the game “breaks” you’re meant to shake it in frustration or touch with two fingers to return to the main screen.
Anyways, sorry everybody, lesson learned! If I ever make another game, I promise not to get meta. <3!
Above: Fuzz Baal.
I’ve been getting more and more emails asking when Fuzz Baal’s going to happen, so I thought I’d post a bit explaining where things stand. Maybe a taste of the reality of app development. I did tests, worked out a better mechanic and animated a few minutes of Fuzz, but at the moment, Fuzz Baal’s probably just not going to happen (I did caveat that ‘coming soon’ with ‘provided Stress Baal’s a hit’). I animated Stress Baal and designed its structure (the spreadsheet for how the thing works is a monster), but I had to pay programmers to actually translate that to code. I think I got a pretty good deal, but the fact is that despite about two million downloads to date*, Stress Baal only sold something like 5,000 copies. That’s not even 5,000 dollars after the stores’ cuts. Didn’t come close to covering the programmers’ fee, let alone the months it took me to animate it. After a year in the app store and on Google Play, I decided to make it free. Of course, that’s when it blew up. Aside from coverage on Cartoon Brew (thanks, Amid and CC!), it never got much press and I never had any sort of marketing budget. Again, this was essentially a solo venture. I hope this doesn’t come off as bitter, cause I’m not bitter about it. Life’s still pretty great, and it’s pretty neat that two million people carry around and have played with my drawings (#actualbrag, #<3wittels). The stars say they’ve even liked them.
But for now, I have to focus my efforts on things that might lead to things that’ll pay the bills. The new short film. Pitches. Scripts. But hey, if anyone knows anyone who’d like to finance Fuzz Baal (ads next time!), send them my way.
Thanks sincerely for your support. Metcalf loves you.
*That’s legal downloads. Stress Baal did much better as a paid game on Google Play than on iOS. But, true story, within the first week that it was on Google Play for .99, at around 1500 sales, google’s top hit for the game was a pirate website showing 30,000 downloads of it. So it goes.
So jazzed about this. The first fan art I’ve ever received! Thanks, Royale!

Baal is a cute little minion devil but can there a picture/video icon to where we can pics of him or a video and maybe dress him up^^ can’t wait for more apps like this^^ but when I shake my phone he dosn’t PPP back up can you fix that.
You should be able to screencap him with your phone's screencap function (lock + menu button on iOS). As for videos, I've always hoped that it would be more fun for people to describe to their friends the funny thing they saw and then try to find it themselves. The nature of the animation (all hand-drawn) means adding clothes would mean redrawing all of that (it takes FOREVER). If you've run into a bug where shaking's not resetting, please touch with two fingers to return to the main menu and start over. Thanks for liking the game and all that!
My game Stress Baal (available for free on itunes and Google Play) broke through the highest math ever really planned for (a million) and is now on more iphones and ipads than there are numbers to count them at 1,200,000+.
Thank you all for real.
Also, if anyone knows anyone who would like to do a million of something (Cartoon Network for example, also Cartoon Network, or Cartoon Network), tell them to hit me up. I’m availz.
