Favorite Capitol Hill Happy Hours!
I decided this week to list a few of my favorite spots in and around Capitol Hill for a few happy hour drinks! As we all know, Cap Hill can be a bit pretentious, but these spots do their best to avoid that vibe while being in the shadow of the US Capitol. So, without further ado:
Tortilla Coast: Slammin' margaritas, chips and salsa, and Shiner...who can say no? Their happy hour runs from 3:30-8, making it one of the longest in the DC, where its not uncommon for HH to be one or two hours. As someone who appreciates sitting my butt on a barstool for hours on end, this is right up my alley! Their original frozen margarita runs you $6 during HH, while a Shiner Seasonal will cost you only $3.75. They also offer great appetizer specials, and FREE chips and salsa. I've always had friendly service there and its conveniently located right next to the Capitol South Metro Station on the Orange Line.
Bullfeathers: Located just a couple doors down is Bullfeathers, a classic DC watering hole. While happy hour here lasts only from 4-6pm. they offer their Bullfeathers Amber (along other beers) for $3 during this time. They have a pretty solid draft list as well, with a nice variety of beers to choose from year round. Its does get a bit crowded here around 5:30 or so, but if you can get in early and get a seat, its well worth your time.
Capitol Lounge: While Capitol Lounge doesn't have the most impressive happy hour deal at $1 off all drafts from 4-7pm, they offer additional food and drink specials each day of the week. I also love the low-key attitude of the servers and clientele here. I always get super friendly service (this is the kind of place where they know your name after just a couple visits) and the food is pretty solid for bar food. They offer a slider special on Thursdays ($2 per slider) where you can mix and match from multiple tasty varieties to make a pretty cheap and very delicious meal (I really enjoyed the Reuben slider).
Hamilton's: Hamilton's Bar and Grill makes this list for their Friday happy hour...or rather, their Happy Hours. They offer $1 Miller High Life and PBR all day each and every Friday. Now, I don't consider myself a beer snob by any means, but I think we can all agree these aren't the most impressive beers on the planet. But, people, they are $1. As many as you can want. All day. All night. Maybe in other cities a $1 beer isn't something to get so excited about, but in DC, any beer for under $3 is considered a steal. So, pull up a barstool, ditch your dignity, and suck down a few cans.
Drink the District Cherry Blossom Wine & Beer Festival
Better late than never...I am only about 3 weeks late posting this review...
I had the opportunity to attend the Drink the District Wine & Beer Festival April 5th in Downtown DC. As usual, it was a blast, with plenty of great wines and beers for everyone to enjoy!
Some highlights of the event:
-Dominion Brewing brought their very appropriate Cherry Blossom Lager (5.2% ABV). Its is conditioned on a bed of 300 pounds of Michigan cherries, but doesn't come out too sweet or overwhelming.
-I spent some time talking with Justin from 3 Stars Brewing, out of right here in DC. They provided their Saison (also available at Nats Park!) and their American Pale Ale. He provided lots of insight into the thought behind the brews and the work that goes into each and every batch. In fact, the beer we sampled was packaged only 6 days before the event, on March 31st. He stressed that 3 Stars focuses on fresh, local beer, giving those in the DMV quality brews both from their actual brewery and at local restaurants and bars.
-Talking to a few attendees, they all agreed that the price was great and lines moved amazingly fast. Most really appreciated the food truck options, and the available space to chill for awhile if desired.
Finally, District Doughnut was offering a few of their delicious wares from a cart at the event. They were kind enough to let me sample all 3 varieties they were offering. Some info on them if you aren't yet familiar:
-They will be opening their storefront in Barracks Row in July
-Their doughnuts stand out from the competition because they make specific dough for each type of doughnut they make! In other words, they aren't just tossing on a flavored glaze and calling it something else.
-All ingredients are fresh...nothing "comes from a bucket" in the words of their Executive Pastry Chef, Christine Schaefer.
All 3 varieties were fantastic, but the Dulce de Leche really blew my mind! While they do not yet have a storefront open, you can still get a taste of all the deliciousness at locations around DC. Follow on Twitter (@dcdoughnut) for their current offerings and location!
Overall, another successful event! If you haven't made it out to a Drink the District event yet, what are you waiting for?!?! Their next event is May 3rd (Derby Days) and includes....wait for it....2 mint juleps with every ticket! Not too shabby if you ask me. And you didn't, but I am sayin' it anyways. Hope you all enjoyed!
Heavy Seas Burgers & Brews
Saturday a group of us attended the Heavy Seas Burger & Brews event at their brewery in Baltimore. Included in the $40 ticket was a slider from 10 Baltimore area restaurants, beer infused ice cream from The Charmery, and unlimited Heavy Seas beers, including some specialty casks.
The 10 restaurants were:
- C&R Pub - The Manor Tavern - Koopers Tavern - Our House - Alexander’s Tavern - Heavy Seas Alehouse - Wiley Gunters - The Rowhouse Grille - T-Bonz Grille - Kloby’s Smokehouse
The Manor Tavern had a fabulous Mac & Cheese Burger, which ended up winning the prize for best burger of the day. It was composed of local beef and bison, an everything brioche bun, and cheddar. The meat was perfectly packed and flavored. And, added bonus, they had jars of homemade pickles to snack on! I would definitely make a trip out to Monkton, MD to hit up Manor Tavern after having their burger!
Kloby's Smokehouse in Fulton, Maryland also brought a winner. I'm already a HUGE fan of Kloby's and eat there at least once a month. For those even remotely close to Columbia, its well worth a visit. They make some of the best barbecue in the DC area and have a fantastic tap list as well. They brought a smokehouse burger to the event, which doesn't seem to be listed on their regular menu. I hope they add it on (hint, hint)!
Other notable burgers included C&R Pub's burger with cheddar fondue and Wiley Gunter's All-American burger with a build-your-own approach. Both had a great burger base. C&R's sharp cheddar sauce was to die for, and I appreciated the simplicity of Wiley Gunter's well flavored patty with bacon and veggie toppings available...I'm a sucker for L,T.O on my burger.
The Charmery, a local ice cream shop in the Hampden neighborhood of Baltimore brought two fantastic flavors of beer infused ice cream. Riptide White IPA with banana and cloves was creamy and sweet, with tons of fresh banana flavor and a hint of hops. The PegLeg Stout with chocolate and coffee was intensely flavored, and ohhhh so good. I hear their Old Bay Caramel flavor is quite the hit, so I'm making that my first scoop when I make it to the storefront!
Heavy Seas offered all their year-round beers and several casks. I can't say that I've every had all of the "usual" offerings, so several were new to me! Loose Cannon, which has never been one of my favorites, was smoother and much better balanced that I remember. Honestly, it has been several years since I last had one. Powder Monkey Pale Ale is a clean English style pale ale, and great for a backyard barbecue!
Of the casks, the PegLeg was a clear favorite, and I generally prefer my stouts to be served at the cask temperature anyway. I never got to try the Grapefruit Ale cask, which was disappointing...it must have been tasty, it disappeared in minutes! Siren Noire was super intense, which isn't exactly surprising as a chocolate imperial stout. It was a bit heavier than I needed after 11 sliders, but would make a great dessert pairing beer!
It was an amazing event, at an amazing value. I would definitely recommend checking out their calendar for upcoming events, as they all sell out, and some sell out quite quickly after tickets become available. While I only wrote about 2 of the 11 participating restaurants, each brought a quality sample and a great staff to the event. Thanks again to Heavy Seas for opening up their brewery for such a fun, eye opening day!

Drink the District? Why yes, yes I will!
On the 15th, several friends and I participated in Drink the District's first event of the year: The Shamrock Beer Bash!
It took place next to Nationals Park on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. For those who haven't been to a Drink the District event, it usually involves unlimited 4 oz. pours of numerous beers (and ciders) and 1-2 styles in which you can receive a full pour. This year, 50 or so breweries participated in this tasting event, with green Bud Light and not-at-all-green Dominion Oak Barrel Stout(!) as the full pours.
While the vast majority of the breweries weren't the most exciting (yes, I'm looking at you Shock Top) most tried to offer beers you may not have sampled before. I was a bit disappointed by the offerings from a couple of my favorite breweries--Tröegs offered their 2 least interesting beers in my oh-so-humble opinion (Hop Back and Dreamweaver) and Victory went with hop on top of hop for their selections. But, all in all, there was still a reasonable variety in styles and flavors for those who lean towards one end of the spectrum or another...
To list a couple of the standout beers:
Rogue came in guns a'blazin with their intense and delicious chocolate stout. Thick, with a surprising (but excellent and needed) kick of hops and a heavy chocolate finish, it walloped you even in a 4 oz. pour. That is only meant as a compliment...I may have gone back for seconds..or thirds...
Lonerider Beer, out of Raleigh, NC, brought 2 great beers, with the Sweet Josie Brown Ale and the Peacemaker Pale Ale. Both were full of flavor and perfectly balanced. I had never heard of the brewery before, but will definitely be on the lookout going forward.
A bit more local, Baltimore's Union Craft Brewing brought the winner of the day within our group: The Blackwing Lager. It certainly impressed, with a crisp, balanced malt flavor. Labeled as a Schwarzbier, it did the style proud. It was much more similar to the Schwarzbiers I had in Germany and the Czech Republic than most varieties I've had stateside. It was very drinkable, but had plenty of flavor and a rich dark brown color. Added bonus: It can be found in cans in the DC area!
To sum it all up, I've always had a good time at the Drink the District events, and this time was no exception. The price is great, the lines move quickly, and while not all the beers excite, there are always plenty that do!
*For those who may want a little more info on some of the beers that were available, I will be posting pictures of some "tasting sheets" that a few of us attempted to fill out during the event. Can't say that we remained focused on details and legibility much longer than about 20 minutes in....oops.

Very disappointing Prix Fixe Dinner at the Mandalay
Of course, since I started the blog by saying most posts would be about cheaper eats, one of the first posts will be about quite the opposite. But come on, it was Valentine's Day, so I decided to try an up-and-coming Prix Fixe reservation-only meal--Mandalay, a Burmese Restaurant in the Shaw neighborhood.
As their website states, "The Mandalay Building currently features 'The Tower' a 7 course dining experience on our second floor available by reservation only, for $70 per person." The chef decides on the menu the evening before and shops that morning for the ingredients. Sounded interesting, and I certainly love Asian food, so we decided to give it a go. We also decided to include the $30 4-course cocktail pairing option.
At first glance, the restaurant seemed a bit more like a lounge than I would have expected, but we were seated immediately and greeted by our very friendly server. We were 2 of only 4 people on the entire upstairs floor, which maybe should have given us pause.
All 7 courses were tasty, but were not worth the price. Each was definitely "tasting" sized and offered no original flavors. After reading such good reviews on the interesting offerings, it was quite a disappointment to receive dishes that can be ordered at the take-out version of Mandalay in Silver Spring. Bean curd cakes (our first course) were crisp and delicious, but are $5.50 at the take out location. The Gyinn Thoke (Ginger Salad) we had for our second course is $7.50. And, while the 4 cocktail pairings were well thought out and original, neither one of us felt they were worth the $30 charge. We also received all 7 courses within one hour of arriving, making our fancy dinner out a very quick affair. It all came off as very strange.
Perhaps they went all out on Valentine's Day itself, leaving the day-after crowd with the leftovers. Either way, both of us diners agreed we felt absolutely cheated with the $220 bill at the end of the night. At most, this particular meal was worth $60 a person, including the pairings. The highlight of the meal was the attentive service we received from our very friendly server.
While I hate to give such a terrible review to a local restaurant trying something different in an up-and-coming neighborhood, I would not recommend the tasting dinner to anyone. I certainly hope we had an off night, but lesson learned yet again: Prix Fixe meals are rarely worth the price.
Evil Twin “Imperial Biscotti Break”
96 A+
This Imperial Stout is available in 22 oz. bombers year-round. Aromas are like biscotti dipped in espresso, balanced evenly by dark chocolate, sweet caramel, cookie dough, and vanilla to round things out. The palate begins with a fruity, blackberry flavor, followed immediately by sweet caramel and chocolate syrup. As sweetness backs down, dark roasted coffee washes in with rich mocha flavor. Light herbal notes surface, followed by a modest bitterness that helps provide a shifting balance. Finishing notes remind me of vanilla blended with almond butter. Mouthfeel is a little thick, slightly sticky, lightly carbonated (wet), with just a drop of oil. Alcohol is fairly well-hidden, departing with a delayed warmth.
Overall, I think this is a pretty stellar Double Stout with a delectable aroma and delicious palate. A slow-rising body of flavor is quick to decay, mellowing out a bit more abruptly than I would have wished for. Chocolate and coffee stand on equal ground, leading to some seriously delectable mocha flavors that any double stout lover would love. This is worth a repeat purchase, because I like what this beer has to offer. Once again, Evil Twin have proven themselves worthy. I recommend it.

If you have never had a Czech beer, this is your chance to try one of the best! I have never had such amazing beer as those we sampled in Prague. Most kegs are trucked in DAILY from the breweries and as such are unpasturized, giving them better, cleaner flavors and an amazing, thick head. And while I doubt it will taste quite the same shipped over here to America, being able to sample the first Czechvar Tmavé (dark) keg in the U.S. will be awesome! Jedno pivo prosim!
