Journal Entry 5!

 As I have said in my previous blog posts, my character is Jordan Baker. Though it is not blankly stated in the novel Jordan's American Dream is to find someone she is happy with and get married, but she will not sell herself short. She knows she is capeable of finding the right person, so she isn't going out of her way to get him. She will let it happen when it does and wants a mate for reasons besides how wealthy they are. She doesn't seem to think like most girls would at the time, throwing themseleves arounf for money. My American Dream is to get married and have a nice family with a good job, house and education. In the aspect of getting married I relate a lot to Jordan. I am not like most teenagers who want a boyfriend or search for someone. For me, I will let it happen when it does and I do not want to force anything to happen. True love will find it's way to me, I don't want to waste my time hunting it. I also think that I would like to find a person set up to my standards and I have yet to find that person. Just like Jordan I won't lower my standards to marry someone just because they are wealthy or have a good job, but will marry them because I care for them and we understand eachother. Compatibility is the most important thing for both Jordan and I, so I would have to say that we have a similar dream in the aspect of love.

Journal Entry 4

   The theme of duality I decided to address in this journal entry was the idea prohibition. The fact of the matter in The Great Gatsby is that the rich don't have to obey the laws because they have enough money to do so. When something such as alcohol is illegal, bootleggers start to sell it under the table for a stealthier price. The only people who could afford to buy it at this point are the rich. That is why I created my meme with the picture of this man, commonly known as 'The Most Interesting Man in the World', because he is dressed well and has a beer next to him and comes across as being wealthy. I then decided to use the words "I don't always get the right to drink" because prohibition was law that applied to everyone in the United States at the time. On the bottom I added "But even when I don't, I still drink." which clearly shows the duality in what I explained before of the rich getting to drink while the poor don't.

Journal Entry 2

What I Will Be Adressing Today:

The upper-class East and West Egg residents seem to be trying to drown their insecurities and hollowness in extravagance and spending. Find a picture that represents something that Americans today are trying to escape and write a paragraph that explains the relationship between the picture you chose and what you think Americans are trying to escape.

My picture is done by one of my all time favorite artists Banksy, this piece being one of my favorites by his. With the economy being down and the rate of homelessness increasing I think Americans are trying to deal with the lower class. The lower class, people who are working so hard to make enough money to feed there kids and try their hardest to make sure they can atleast uphold a roof over their childrens heads. In high income communities we want to get rid of the homeless people we see, the families that are asking around for spare change. I feel like the middle class and high class communities are not approaching this issue correctly. We say we want to help people and want to see change happen. I always think to myself "why are there so many homes taken from families by banks that are left empty?" It irratates to me think how selfish we are as a human race. These families you are putting out on the street, where will they go? Do you even care? If you asked the bankers they would say "of course we do!" because that's what all humans would say. We have good intentions and in human nature we never would want to see bad, then why do we create it. We need to take the lower class and cut them some slack, help them out. I'm sure there lives are hard as it is, a little help wouldn't hurt anyone. This picture is the perfect representation of this idea. The homeless man is holding a sign that says "Keep your coins... I want CHANGE." A few cents would help sure, but that won't change his situation. A dollar from a stranger won't give him a house. We all have a heart, so lets find it in all of us to help these people. Lets help the lower class, who need the help.

Journal Entry 1

The questions I will be adressing:

Which character in The Great Gatsby do you identify with an why?

After researching the characters in The Great Gatsby, I feel as though I identify myself with Jordan Baker. I found out that she is a very competitive, classified as a ”new women” of the 20’s, who is also cynical and self centered and also will do anything to stay on top. Though I don’t necessarly find myself falling under all these characteristics I do belive I have some of the same ones in common such  as being competitive, self centered (to an extent), and find myself thinking really similarly to the “new women” of the 1920’s. I guess the only characteristic I don’t find myself embodying is that I won’t do anything to stay on top. I don’t really classify myself as being self centered but more over confident like I don’t care when people say something to me like “you’re ugly” or “you’re dumb” because I know I am not anything near that. I am simply not hurt by others’ words. I know though that I will not hurt anyone to be the best, I don't agree with pushing people down to be on top. I think if we all work together then we can all be at the top together and we won't have that much jealousy and betrayal and hurt in the world.

Do/have you ever pushed away a person who loves you for selfish reasons like Myrtle? Why do you think you/Myrtle chose to do this? Is it your right as a person to look for and do whatever will make you most happy (so long as it doesn’t harm others)?

I think I find myself doing this a lot I think for the same reasons Myrtle does. I'm afraid of opening up and then getting hurt in the end. I think everyone is aware that teenagers are over dramatic and that the little things hurt them so I don't want to deal with heart ache. I don't want to waste my time fighting with someone I care about so I would rather not hurt them by keeping them away from me. It's obvious when someone likes you by how they act around you, talk to you, just everything they do. By pushing them away you keep them from liking you and in turn hurting them. I don't want to have someone that will depend on me and need me all the time because that will get in my way of my dreams. When I have my mind set on doing something it will get done and love will just be a road block I don't need in my way. I think as a person it is my right to do what will make me the most happy but there are also priorties in life. There is a time for everything and sometimes you have to put things on hold in your life to take on one thing you've been wanting to do. I think that I don't want waste my time on something that is more or less temporary hapiness and focus it on something that will benefit me in the future and will be worthwhile. In the future there will be time for love, but for right now I don't need to worry about it.
