Would you still follow SJ if they used AI? Every group is doing it.
I wouldn't just drop the group entirely especially since that would be an issue stemming from SM regardless of what the members thought of AI. But I would not be supporting or streaming the MV if it used generative AI. If AI was used in the lyrics or used in the album design, I would not be purchasing the album. I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw that Express Mode's MV had no AI at all and it was just really well-done CGI.
Unfortunately, however, on a personal level, basically all the SJ members as millennial men in South Korea seem to really like it. And yes, I acknowledge that the majority of the world has no problem with AI, without really grasping its devastating effects on the environment or the fact it steals from actual human-made art and content that the AI is trained off of. SJ just happen to be one of them. If I recall correctly the only member who hasn't used it in a positive way is EH, though some members have used it more than others. I just hope the use of AI for SJ doesn't go beyond personal use and posting on their social media.
And on the topic of SJ and AI, I hope ELF stop trying to set them up by creating AI "fanart" and tagging the members so they repost it on their social media and then call other ELF "woke" when they call the members and the fans out on it and speak over fans trying to educate the members on AI.
I would not support any release using GenAI in any way. Idk if I’d drop the group as a whole, probably not unless they consistently started using AI every comeback. But I wouldn’t listen to their new releases as long as they kept using AI for them.
There’s just a thin line between CGI and AI. AI simply sped up the process. But CGIs have been used in movies and music videos for so long, and we never had a problem with it. It’s seen as a technological advancement rather than a blasphemy to real artists.
I know AI pushed the desecration even further—I’m a hobbyist-artist myself. But I’m also a realist. You cannot stop technological advancement. You simply flow with it and explore other uncharted territories where such advancement can be used to further one’s artistry.
So, to your answer --- I will only stop supporting Super Junior if Heechul retires or goes back to his old flame, whose fandom brought nothing but chaos and backlash to his reputation—and to us, Petals.
~ CGI wasn’t trained upon the stolen works of artists who didn’t give consent to their art being used this way, I don’t think we can consider CGI and GenAI equivalent at all.
I definitely wouldn’t stream the MV, but then I have only ever done that for this comeback anyway. I think ELF generally would kick up a fuss on Bubble etc if they got wind of it. Definitely hope D&E wouldn’t do that but I can also see how as a small company there might be a financial consideration for them.
According to the KOMCA, you can't register a song for copyright, if AI was used at any point in the creative process. So, either lyrics or music is off limit if you want to make money.
However the music video (and also teaser images) is fair game and plenty of companies have been using AI in them for the past year already. SM, the Black Label and YG all have an "AI Artist" credited for some of their music videos.
Personally, I will always call this out, if I notice it, but despite everyone always talking about how shitty it is, fans always show up to argue that the AI actually had a purpose and is useful for this one exception and frankly, we shouldn't settle for mediocrity.
I don't really care, if they wanna use AI for their creative process then whatever I'm not against it. Ai has been here and will continue to be here for a very long time, it's how it's used that's important. I believe it can be utilised positively for human creation if done properly, example: An artist I follow took the AI glass fruit ASMR trend and turned it into a real thing link I think AI is fine when it's used like this 😊 of course 100% AI slop I am against, like the aforementioned glass fruit videos in its original form but when it's used to assist humans then it's okay in my book.
Tbh I've been out of the fandom for more than a decade right now. Part of the reason for that is that I can't support people like Siwon without opposing the things I believe and trust in. The fact that most fans are fine with just ignoring "that side of him" (it's his core beliefs really, the it is what makes him who he is and he wants it to be that way) goes to show with how shallow the industry and fandoms in general are.
I'm not okay with fascism, I'm not okay with racism, I'm not okay with homophobia and transphobia and I won't interact with people who are. The people who Siwon believes have less worth than others don't have that luxury, and I choose to side with them over some asshole in his fourties who refuses them basic human sympathy. And to be honest I think it doesn't get more unchristian than that.
