The tone of the Lord Commander’s voice was hinting at every emotion currently rushing through his system, just as expected, and when Estinien feels the heavy hand on his shoulder, he finally turns, looking at his old friend. And despite Aymeric now rising to the title of Lord Speaker, looking at him revealed that not much had changed. Aymeric de Borel was now in charge of Ishgard, responsible of leading this great nation into a peaceful future, but hidden behind all these titles and responsibilities Estinien could still see the gentleness in those blue eyes, he could still hear the slight shake in his voice as he tried not to reveal too much about the joy he felt. Looking at this man Estinien could so easily remember the first time they met even though he had been struggling to even remember the other man’s name back then, he could remember the countless times they had found comfort in one another’s company without having to say much. Nothing had changed. Just being here with Aymeric was enough to calm the wild sea of emotions in his own chest.
“I hope you don’t mind me invading your home unannounced, especially at this hour. I’ve heard your ceremony is today and I..”
Estinien awkwardly scratched the back of his head, not being quite sure what he wanted to say or how he should say it. He was not much of a talker, or at least he had not been in the past; he didn’t need to be as he had preferred to hunt dragons by himself, enjoying the solitude, or forcing himself into it, more likely.
“I am happy for you. I know you will be doing well.”
And he meant it. He had always known Aymeric was destined for greatness. In a world of coldness he had stayed warm, in a world of cruelty he had remained gentle and that was braver than facing any dragon would ever be.
Estinien puts his hand on top of Aymeric’s, giving it a short squeeze before he steps over to the table, pointing to the single bottle of wine waiting for them there.
“I brought this wine, to celebrate. The merchant said it was a fine one, really expensive, and maybe it will help you warm up a little, from the inside. You look frozen stiff.”
"Unannounced or otherwise, you're always welcome here." And Aymeric had always made a point to mention it, too. Should his dear friend have ever had a need for a place to stay, for company, for aught at all - - the doors (and windows, apparently-) were always open for him.
The mention of the ceremony, however, has his joyous mask briefly slip. He'd fought, gently, to not take on the role of Lord Speaker; he had his hands full enough with the congregation and the tail end of the war still lingering in everyone's minds. Eventually, however, he found he had no choice but to relent and thus his workload doubled, and so did the stress and the nightmares that accompanied; trauma that had sprouted over recent months that he never had the time to address.
He spoke of none of it, however.
"Ah-- thank you, my friend." He wants to mention how he doesn't want it, but he keeps such opinions and thoughts under key, deep within. It wasn't worth causing issue, it wasn't worth kicking up a fuss - he had taken a vow when he was younger to protect the city, and that had simply grown. Any life he could have lived had perished the moment that vow had been made.
The bottle of wine gestured towards was greatly appreciated, and with nary a word does he step to the other side of the room to pull two glasses out of the cabinet;
"You don't happen to have enough time to stick around for a glass, do you? Or will I be turning around to find that I am once again alone in the room?" Its half a joke, half expected; Estinien was as flighty as a bird, after all, and to find him suddenly missing was not uncommon. He hoped he would stay, if only for a little longer... how he'd missed him dearly.
For a short moment Estinien’s pale face blushed in shame when Aymeric asked if he had a moment to spare or if he would leap out of the window the moment he would turn his back on him. He could not blame his friend. Estinien had used the elusive jump to flee and avoid unpleasant conversations ever since he had become a dragoon; it was the same way he had fled the city state without so much as a goodbye once he had recovered enough from the wounds inflicted on him by Nidhogg.
Leaving his friend to worry like that wasn’t one of his finest deeds, he could admit that, but that was why he was here, wasn’t it? Making up for his mistakes, showing Aymeric he had nothing to worry about. At least not about him. And he was here so he could check on Aymeric in return.
“Ah, I guess I could stay for a glass or two”, Estinien said lamely, fumbling nervously with a button on his sleeve before finally turning to open the bottle of wine, pouring the content into the two glasses provided by the owner of the house. Then he handed one of the glasses to Aymeric before lifting his own glass to his nose, deciding that the scent of the wine was rather.. interesting? Well. So be it. Estinien raised his glass to his friend.
“To your health, Lord Speaker.”
Estinien grinned and took a sip of his wine. Then he stopped. Scrunching up his nose he wiped the back of his hand over his mouth as if he could eliminate the dreadful taste from his lips.
“By Halone, what in the world is this? This tastes worse than anything I’ve ever had at the cheapest of taverns.”
Still it did not keep him from finishing the rest of his glass in one go. That was just his luck. To bring the most rotten of wines while he wanted to celebrate with Aymeric. With a sigh the dragoon let his gaze wander over Aymeric’s form almost shamelessly, taking in the details of his stunning appearance before meeting the other’s bright eyes again.
“You are not well, are you, Aymeric? I see the shadows under your eyes, the exhaustion on your face. What are these people doing to you.”
Shine bright like the stars in the night sky, my beautiful daughters.
I’m not crying, you’re crying 😢
A part of Hythlodaeus found the other’s random affection endearing, though he had to remind himself that it was caused by the alcohol currently raging through Hades’ system. Yes, Hades was not fond of social gatherings and banquets of any sort, but if Hythlodaeus’ could bring his friend even the tiniest bit of comfort he was happy to oblige. Trying to keep his own excitement in check he remained where he was, head resting on the other’s shoulder, at least until he spoke again. And with Hades’ words confusion returned to him. This was about Alexandros again. Where did the sudden interest come from? Or maybe it was not even mere interest, Hythlodaeus had seen Hades’ soul flicker and almost rage when interacting with Hythlodaeus’ possible new associate.
“I am not sure yet”, Hythlodaeus replies in all honesty. “We seem to share the interest in specific concepts and it would be interesting to see another opinion on my work.”
To him it was not a big deal, he had not witnessed the cruel words Alexandros had teased his dear friend with, he was unaware of the danger, but before he could inquire about it Hades pulls away, shrugging him off like he was nothing more than a nuisance, an inconvenience.
Hythlodaeus couldn’t help but feel hurt. The whole evening Hades had acted hot and cold, more so than usual even, first asking for his help before dismissing him. Now he had taken him to the balcony, he had held his hand, only to put distance between them once again.
Please just ask me to dance. Please just invite me to a drink, Hythlodaeus thought to himself as he watched Hades turn away from him. Please give me a reason to stay.
Eventually the lavender-haired man sighed quietly, the hand that had been held before now feeling weirdly empty and cold. He could still feel the ghost of Hades’ touch on it and he had to fight the urge to reach out once more, instead he forced a smile on his face. He didn’t have it in him to put his own needs and desires before Hades’, especially now that the other was on the verge of being completely drunk. His voice was calm and gentle when he spoke, despite the slight twinge in his chest.
“You are unwell. Would you let me walk you home?”
' I am not sure yet. '
The statement alone is enough to make Hades' heart drop deep into his stomach, and for the first time in as LONG as he can remember, he feels... uncertain. Afraid.
Alone.
Hades realizes, even through the haze of his intoxication, that he is strangely protective over Hythlodaeus. The man is grown, SMARTER than Hades as the silveret would confidently claim and contest in support of, but still, Hades finds it necessary to be the primary one fighting in his corner and making sure he was safe. That his talents and skillset were not being taken ADVANTAGE of.
" I c'n get home jus' fine. " Though, the way he was teetering on the edge of toppling over, 'tis apparent he is, in fact, NOT able to get home just fine. " I should not have come--- this has been a nightmarish waste of my time, if only b'cause of that... that MAN... you were with, and will BE with, and... "
Now, it's starting to come out. Now, as the alcohol settles within his belly more and more, the TRUTH is unearthed and laid out atop the table for all to see and gawk at.
Considering how long they had been friends Hythlodaeus always prided himself with how well he knew Hades in comparison to anyone else, but in this very moment even he was at a loss for words. None of this made sense. Not until some more or less coherent sentences spilled out of Hades’ mouth. For a moment there was silence as Hythlodaeus tried to come up with a decent reply to what Hades had just admitted; so he was indeed worried about this new potential colleague.
“Is that what you are worried about?”, he asked eventually, not understanding the tension as Alexandros had appeared to him like someone who was sincerely interested in his work and Hythlodaeus felt the urge to pry deeper into the matter, but seeing Hades so very obviously frustrated with the alcohol leaving a slight trace of pink on his cheeks, he couldn’t help but feel protective.
“My dear friend. You can not get home just fine. Let me walk you home to make it up to you for this waste of your time.”
He was slow when he reached out, but just as Hades had done before it was now Hythlodaeus who took the other’s hand in his own, carefully leading him away, past several other Amaurotines that glanced at them with curiosity, but he only shook his head at them, indicating that they had no time for more idle chatter.
Hythlodaeus wanted to protect Hades. From others that could take advantage of his vulnerable form and maybe even from his own painful thoughts. As they exited the building and walked down the garden path he suddenly could feel a gaze at the back of his neck, and when he turned he saw Alexandros stand there, a smile on his face when Hythlodaeus looked at him, but he couldn’t help but sense a bit of hostility in the other’s eyes when his gaze fell on Hades.
Quickly Hythlodaeus led his friend away with a hand on the small of his back, suddenly feeling a little anxious about this man that Hades was jealous not so fond of. What exactly had happened between the two? Hythlodaeus could not recall anyone who did not secretly like and admire Emet-Selch, but the expression in Alexandros’ eyes had been more than disdain, it had almost felt like hatred.
“I don’t know what scenario your drunken mind had conjured for you, but I am here with you, aren’t I? And is that not important?”
Deities, but just to be touched... to be held in such a way that made Aymeric feel safe, SECURE... aye, Estinien needed the comfort and reassurance far more than he did, but it would be an obvious LIE to claim he wasn't desperate for it himself. He would never admit it, nay. Never ask for it, surely never beg, but sometimes, he feels the weight of it all begin to drag him under, and once, just ONCE, he wishes someone would reach a hand out to pull him back up, dust him off, and tell him he's doing a fine job.
Estinien hasn't QUITE done all that, but he's done far more than most in just the short time they've been reunited.
" ... then stay, " he whispers, daring not move lest Estinien go leaping out the nearest window again, never to be seen for an even longer amount of time. Aymeric welcomes the touch, wholly and genuinely, their fingers slipping betwixt one another's in a perfect, fitting puzzle. Both palms rough from war, HARDSHIP, but who cares in a moment like this when it feels so very right, grounding. " You speak of forgiveness you need not earn from me, Estinien; I never once held any of this against you, and I am willing to confidently claim many see it as I do. Nay, not EVERYONE, not even the majority, but... "
It may be an ill fitting moment to chuckle, but Aymeric does. 'Tis quiet, gentle, as are most of his exhibitions of amusement, but he is quick to explain this sudden shift. " Do you remember all of those near sleepless nights we spent huddled up to one another, worn from a full day of training? I only ever managed to drift off because you would valiantly promise to PROTECT me, you know, and oft, I would awaken to a trail of DROOL slipped from betwixt my lips and nearly wither away from embarrassment... " Again, Ishgard's beloved leader chuckles, a flush of warmth blanketing his cheeks, " You never once JUDGED me, and more importantly, you never went back on your promise. You have always put everyone else above yourself, Estinien... and many remember that, and will continue to during your time here. I know this to be true. "
He lifts his head if only so he may find and meet Estinien's gaze, so that the dragoon may SEE he is resolute in his decision, with a stroke of his thumb atop the other's trembling hand as an additional means of comfort. " Stay. Please... "
Stay. For most people it would sound like an easy request, but to Estinien it was both what he wished for and feared the most. There was the aspect of guilt that obviously weighed heavily on his soul, the guilt was torturing him because how was a soul supposed to live if it could never achieve the sweet release of forgiveness.
But wanting to stay and wanting Aymeric was equally scary. There was fear of rejection, fear of making himself vulnerable, and yet it was Aymeric himself who seemed to lay his soul bare right in front of him. The little chuckle caught him off guard, but it also filled him with a comfortable warmth that nestled down inside his chest, trying to vanquish the darkness that had been controlling him for so long.
“Of course I remember”, Estinien replied as fond memories returned to him; memories of the very moments Aymeric described. Of Estinien barely sleeping as he watched over Aymeric in his sleep, holding his lance protectively over his sleeping form even when no wyrms were nearby. He had sworn to protect him and Estinien would not fail him, though at this point, did he not already break his promise? Had Nidhogg not forced his hand?
Estinien wanted this. He wanted this more than anything in his sorry existence. It was time to make a move of his own. When Aymeric tilts his head to look at Estinien, he mirrored the action to slightly look down and therefore meet the other’s eyes. Those gentle eyes that always looked at him like he saw him as something more than just a weapon. The dragoon swallowed hard.
“Do you remember how I struggled to remember your name because I was so convinced I had no room for anything but vengeance in my heart?”, Estinien whispered, his voice barely audible as he lifts his hand to gently grab Aymeric’s chin, holding him there so he could keep gazing into his bright blue eyes.
“And yet here you are…”
For a short moment Estinien leaned in until their noses almost brushed against one another and he realized what he was doing. Immediately he took a step back, rubbing his hands over his face to hide the slight blush before he crouched down to pick up one of the random blankets on the ground.
“If I stay I will need a place to sleep, no? I think it is time you finish this blanket fort with me, Lord Commander.”

Heavensward Estinien putting on his armour
@tenebriism sent: Aymeric is just going to... shyly run his fingers through Estinien's hair, just to see if he is welcome to go further.
There was not much to do. Except to give his body the time to heal. Waking up alive after begging the Warrior of Light to kill him on the Steps of Faith was nothing less than a miracle to him, but having young Lord Alphinaud cry and mewl like a cat at his bedside had been even more of a surprise. Why would anyone shed tears for him after the things he had done. Or the things Nidhogg had made him do? Coming to terms with the fact that he was alive was just as difficult as accepting the sins he had committed under the great wyrm‘s control. How was he supposed to live with his sins? How was he supposed to atone for them? Those were questions that kept the injured dragoon awake day and night while it should have been better to allow himself to rest and recuperate.
Slowly lifting the bowl of soup to his lips he took a sip of the hot broth and swallowed hard. Soup. It was all he could stomach after being injured so gravely, but Estinien was not one to complain, he would accept and endure, it’s what he always did.
And yet a part of him yearned for someone, anyone to rest a hand on his shoulder and tell him it was okay to rest. That the war was over and he could lay down his burden. That salvation would come in the form of his dearest friend was something he never would have dared to hope, but as Aymeric sat on the chair next to his sickbed, Estinien barely dared looking at him. After almost losing his life Aymeric looked even more like an angel sent by Halone, here to guide and save him. It had been his dear friend who had carried him all the way back to Ishgard, was it not?
When suddenly a hand reached out and slender fingers started running through his hair Estinien froze. It was by no means unpleasant, it was the simply surprise of realising that this was exactly what he needed. A shiver ran down his spine and for a moment the dragoon trembled where he sat, and without saying anything Estinien simply shifted to the side, leaning his head slightly against Aymeric‘s hand, a silent invitation for him to continue.
Eliane begins braiding Estinien's hair.
Estinien hummed quietly as soon as he felt long fingers find their way into his hair. It was not the first time they shared a quiet moment of peacefulness and it certainly would not be the last. In a way it still felt strange, to share such a peaceful moment with Eliane. After losing Haurchefant it had seemed that revenge would be all they would be after for the rest of their lives. To avenge a soul as precious as his was no easy feat and he could never be replaced, yet to see Eliane allow herself to heal slowly but surely was inspiring to him. Maybe Estinien would be able to earn forgiveness too one day.
“Do you have experience with braiding hair?”, the dragoon asked casually, wondering where her sudden desire to be close to him was coming from, but he was enjoying the fingers running through his hair and slightly tugging on it more than he should.
T'aiyo will braid Estinien's hair. "How often do you wash this?"
Estinien stays still when the Miqo’te moves to stand behind him. There was a feeling of mutual trust and respect after all the adventures they had survived together, but still there was a moment of anticipation. What was T'aiyo about to do? Then suddenly there was the feeling of clawed fingers carefully gathering his long hair before braiding it. It had been quite a while until someone had done that for him and the sudden closeness made the Elezen shiver ever so slightly, not knowing if he should allow himself this indulgence or pull away. Yet he remained still. He was curious if the Miqo’te would braid his hair in a specific manner, but the question almost made him choke.
“What is that supposed to mean? Did you find any dried blood in my hair? As long as it’s not mine it should not be of concern.”
just gonna make a tiny promo to put myself out there since i've been inactive, so, if you want, please like and reblog this post if you want to interact with an RP blog for gaius van baelsar from ffxiv!
