This scene Casey and I had a 20 minute argument/discussion over whether he should pat Lucas on the shoulder or not. Which was in a way a culmination of our whole professional relationship in this movie. There’s a scene coming up where he has a dream his daughters are talking to him and we shot that scene first […] And the scene with the daughters upset me so much that when we’ve gone on this discussion, Casey wanted to pat him on the shoulder and I said, “I don’t think he should” and Casey argued and argued not aggressively, but just persistently until I actually broke down and started crying. Casey said, “Okay, okay, I won’t pat him on the shoulder! I won’t! I won’t!” I said, “No, it’s not that! It’s the other scene we shot just freaked me out.” And then Lucas came running over, “What’s the matter? What’s the matter?” and Casey said, “I made him cry!” but that’s the kind of discussion we had pretty much every day, that one was a little more elaborate than usual. -Kenneth Lonergan
