Woman Reading. Rik Wouters (Fauvism, Belgian, 1882-1916).
Wouters, a painter, sculptor, draughtsman and printmaker, became a pupil at the Academie des Beaux-Arts. There he met Hélène Duerinckx (Nel) who was to become his wife and favourite model.
Wouters focused on studies of light. He chose to depict interiors and stillifes, painted with a spatula and showing an abundant use of colour laid down on cardboard. In 1911 Wouters changed his style, abandoning the use of the spatula and opting for the brush. In order to obtain a maximum of transparency the painter diluted his colours and used absorbing canvases. It resulted in a reduced scale of warm tones and a diminished brilliancy of colours.
The influence of impressionist painters was reflected in his own work where colours gained the illusion of shimmering light.

TETRIS: prototypes and early versions.
If I say “Tetris music”, does it get stuck in your head then?

Just some weird & wonderful plants doing cool stuff:
A native of Australia, fiery red blooms emerge from this Eucalyptus macrocarpa after its tiny pointed cap (known as a calyx) pops off. See it blooming in the Australia Garden.
You can’t miss the brilliant turquoise flowers and hot pink stalks produced by the Puya—see three different varieties ( Puya alpestris, Puya venusta, and Puya coerulea var. violacea) blooming now in the Desert Garden.
Did you know that cool spring weather can affect the shape of rose petals? In varieties like ‘Mellow Yellow’ and ‘Easy Does It II,’ found in our Rose Garden, the flowers produce frilly petals only during the first bloom cycle of early spring.
Chorisia insignis, also known as the silk floss tree, palo borracho, samu'ũ, paineira, or toborochi, is native to Argentina and part of the baobab family. After flowering in the winter, it disperses seeds within balls of fluffy, fibrous matter, similar to wool or cotton. See it fluffing near the Huntington Art Gallery.
Today, we’re celebrating Earth Day by sharing this incredible photo of the first untethered spacewalk, conducted by NASA astronaut Bruce McCandless on February 7, 1984. Captured by his fellow crew members aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger, this photo shows McCandless approaching his maximum distance from the vehicle. Following the walk, when asked to describe the panorama with the Earth below him, McCandless remarked: “It really is beautiful.”

Check out the dendritic drainage patterns on this small bay in Prince Frederick Harbour, Western Australia. Dendritic literally means branched, as in resembling the pattern of a tree. This shape develops when streams move across relatively flat and uniform rock or over a surface that resists erosion.

Dendritic drainage systems are seen around the Shadegan Lagoon by Musa Bay in Iran. The word ‘dendritic’ refers to the pools’ resemblance to the branches of a tree, and this pattern develops when streams move across relatively flat and uniform rocks, or over a surface that resists erosion.
