The internet could change next week, and not in a good way
You may have heard about the efforts in Europe to reform copyright law. The debate has been ongoing in the European Parliament for months.Ā If approved next week, these new regulations would require us to automatically filter and block content that you upload without meaningful consideration of your right to free expression.Ā
We respect the copyrights and trademarks of others, and we take all reports seriously to ensure that your creative expression is protected. We make this clear in our Community Guidelines.Ā Thereās already a legal framework that works and is fair: TodayĀ we take down posts and media that contain allegedly infringing content when we receive a valid DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) takedown request. We also provide clear-cut ways for people to fight back if they believe their removed content was not a true violation. These instances are monitored and reported and live in our biannualĀ transparency report.Ā
The suggestion to use automated filters for issues of copyright is short-sighted at best and harmful at worst. Automated filters are unable to determine whether a use should be considered āfair useā under the law and are unable to determine whether a use is authorized by a license agreement. They are unable to distinguish legitimate parody, satire, or even your own personal pictures that could be matched with similar photographs that have been protected by someone else. We donāt believe that technology should replace human judgment. Tumblr is and always has been a place for creative expression, and these new regulations would only make it harder for you to express yourself with the freedom and clarity you do so now.Ā

āCan I tell you a secret? You donāt have to be in a relationship. I mean it. I know they force it down your throat until you choke on it. Girls arenāt pretty unless theyāre wanted. Boys arenāt men unless theyāre having sex with someone. People arenāt lovable until theyāre dating someone. But a relationship wonāt always make you happy, and as wonderful as romance is, it isnāt the only love that exists. I have seen friendships that are deeper and more pure than couples who swear itās forever - and yet the friendship is the one people ignore. I have heard so often ānobody loves meā out of the mouths of people who are single. And it kills me because if you ask them: where are your parents, your teachers, your classmates, your pets - they say, yes, okay, but it doesnāt count. Of course it counts, love doesnāt diminish just because someone doesnāt want to have sex with you. In fact, doesnāt it sort of make that love more real that they want nothing - not even a date - out of you? It is pretty to be in love. Itās magical, Iām sure. But itās also wonderful to stop for ice cream in your prom dress with six other girls. Itās also wonderful to go visit the world with nothing but a bunch of buddies who are really excited about learning. The problem is: weāve made everything about āthe oneā. But maybe āthe oneā is just you, loving yourself, having fun, and being happy. Maybe instead of looking for our other halves, we should be piecing ourselves together. Maybe I wasnāt born unfinished. Maybe I am the one who makes myself better.ā

As artists, we can often feel like weāve plateaued on our progress because of lack of time, or resources. Not every artist has the time to go to art classes, and not every artist has the money to attend art-school and receive a proper critique.Ā
Thatās why Iāve created this blog! Introducing theā¦Ā
The Redline Station is a blog that is dedicated to helping artists. If an artist is struggling with anatomy, or would like a critique on their art, they can submit the art using the SUBMIT YOUR ART button. Then, one of our moderator artists will pick up their piece and do a redline of it to help them better see the places that need fixing.
Whatās a redline?
Good question!Ā A redline is when an artist will draw directly over a piece of art in order to show what the mistakes in anatomy are. By seeing the comparison of the art itself (at a lower opacity) and of the more accurate anatomical example, the artist can more quickly improve their drawing.
Our artists will take your submitted drawing and give you a redline. They will then post it to the blog alongside the original to help you compare the two and easily see what needs to be done. Itāll look somewhat like this!
Q: Can I submit anything?Ā
A: Yes! Any type of art, human or animal is okay! The only thing thatās not okay is gore and pornography. The posts will need to be PG-13. (Kissing and suggestive scenes are okay, however.)
Q: Will you redline if the drawing is in my style?Ā
A: Yes! Anime style, cartoony style drawings are also okay. The idea isnāt to fix the drawing to look more like ārealismā, but to fix it to make it look more believable within the frame of style itās already in.
Q: How many drawings can I submit for redlining?
A: For the time being, Iām the only one running the blogā¦ In order to keep my sanity, I will accept only one submission per person and only keep submissions open for a limited time until I get more help. Which brings us to our next pointā¦Ā
