@systemthinker
Hi. I'm not sure if you log on here anymore, but I like your work. I relate to your writing a lot.
Thank you! I appreciate it a lot.
Hello. I was wondering if you'd give me your thoughts on an unhealthy INTP? Like one who has depression and anxiety, and how they would go about becoming healthier
The best (fictional) example that came to my mind is dr. Spencer Reid from Criminal Minds when he's acting out of character after being abducted by Henkel.
As for how they would (ideally) cope: they would have to utilise their dominant Ti to sufficiently analyse themselves and the situation, along with their aux Ne to gather enough information about the situation, and figure out how everything is connected. Then they can consult their tert Si to see if they've ever encountered a similar situation before, and what coping strategies they might have gathered from that experience. They can use their inf Fe to connect to people (to talk their issues out) and ground themselves by way of gaining reassurance that they are cared for and not alone. However, TP types (and ITPs especially) are self-governed and very independent, so they might refrain from the latest coping mechanism.
I just read your post for Stiles mbti and an article about it (both about him being an INTJ) and I'm sitting here like am I actually an intj and not an infj. As a child and teenager I got typed as a intj and then once as an infj when I was like 22. This is so confusing. Do you know any good test or have any differentiating traits for them? Please and thanks.
Hello! Probably the easiest way to distinguish whether you're TJ or FJ is answering the following questions (taken from dr. Drenth's book, My True Type):
Imagine you are involved in a social gathering, hosted by someone else, involving six couples, three of which are new to the group. Now ask yourself the following questions:
Would I feel responsible for ensuring that the newer couples feel comfortable and at ease?
Would I go out of my way to reach out to them and help them assimilate to the group?
Is helping newcomers feel welcome and comfortable in social settings one of my natural skills?
Generally, FJs answer 'yes' to all of the above questions. However, you should familiarise yourself with the function theory in more depth, because in order for you to claim yourself to be a certain type, all of the functions should apply to you, in the right functional stack. Be sure to provide yourself examples of overarching patterns when trying to figure out your motivations behind your actions.
It's possible that you typed INTJ as a teenager and that you type INFJ in your 20s. This is because of the ego development: around age 10-12, the auxiliary function starts to develop, but if you overindulge your dominant for whatever reason, you unconsciously resist the auxiliary, as it has the potential to shatter your ego-image (it's directed in a different direction than your dominant). In the case of dom Ni, the extraverted auxiliary judging function could potentially shatter your vision of yourself, so you ignore the call of the aux judging function, which results in you utilising the tertiary (which is directed in the same direction as the dominant).
In the case of INFJs, this means that they may rationalise away their maladaptive behaviours and become reclusive (e.g. rationalising that people are stupid and they don't need anyone, whereas Fe would encourage them to connect to the others and accept outward contribution). In the case of INTJs, this results in moralising away their maladaptive behaviours (e.g. they are convinced to have the moral high-ground, even when their irrational/incompetent behaviour produces bad results, whereas Te would encourage them to correct their faults and mistakes).
It's possible that you're an INFJ who mistyped as INTJ due to lack/suppression of the development of the auxiliary J function, but it's hard to tell anything certain based on a couple lines.
Enfp lady: is my intj interested?? Started as coworkers. we talk/hang out daily. Flirty texts. He'll (actually!) tell me his emotions. But I'm confused cuz I spend the night at his house a lot watchin movies w/him in bed but he never tries anything?
I’m by no means a psychic, and what you mentioned here doesn’t necessarily qualify as him being interested in you romantically. You should learn about his motivations; maybe he just views you as a friend? views you as someone trustworthy? This isn’t enough information to come to an adequate conclusion.Generally, INTJs have a tendency to handle crushes in an awkward, clumsy manner due to tertiary Fi; they stumble when it comes to emotional matters, and even if he is interested, most likely he has no idea how to handle his attraction towards you. It is also worth to keep in mind that the way he acts will be greatly influenced by the development level of his Fi. Being a serious type, INTJs don’t easily fall for anyone, nor crush on anyone. In case it does happen to them, they will likely treat it in a serious manner, and will try to strategically flesh out the situation. Since they are most comfortable using NiTe, they will have a practical approach to courting; they will evaluate the pros and cons, will consider whether it is worth giving it a shot in regards to a most likely future outcome (”Will it work out in the long haul?”), will compare the two of you in regards to how well you fit together, etc.Immature INTJs will be most likely inactive (due to overanalysing the situation), will be defensive against their emotions/won’t be able to handle them adequately, thus they will exhibit negative behaviour towards you, etc. A mature INTJ will, on the other hand, go out of his/her way to get you to like them, e.g. talking about their personal life, listen to you regardless of what you have to say (even if they are not interested in the topic you brought up), will likely observe you to understand you better, etc. Options vary depending on the person; while one might share emotional matters with you, the other might have an aversion to do that. You should pay attention to differences he exhibits between treating you and other people. You need to be observant to be able to read between the lines of his behavioral patterns.
Think you could type me? I've learned to manipulate the test and now I'm doing it without wanting to. I know I'm an enneagram type 3.
I could help, but you should provide me with information about yourself, e.g. looping/grip behaviours, major motivations, etc.
Dylan O’Brien [ENFP]
Ne: When you listen to him talk, you’re bound to realize how much he talks in pictures. Even his choice of words is not concrete, they don’t refer to definite objects, but to an image that you have to imagine up yourself. He also uses words that he came up with; it’s almost like having a personal vocabulary on his own. Dylan is extremely playful and loves to connect with others. He uses wordplay quite a bit of times, e.g. you will hear him saying things such as, “it makes this all naturally super” instead of simply saying ‘supernatural’, or instead of expressing himself in a concrete manner like a S-type would, he says, “wolf stuff” by way of an umbrella term. He also seems to be prone to diverging during conversations, so if it weren’t for the questions he’s asked, he would be talking about five things at a time, switching between them randomly and erratically. Dylan is a hugely talented actor because he’s able to literally intuit himself into the role he has to play, thus acting the character comes naturally to him. According to him, he’s a “huge everything geek”.
Fi: Dylan is unable to stay deadpan while he’s joking. Once he was even dared not to laugh for a minute—he started to break after 7 seconds, and ended up failing the dare (he laughed twice). During acting, he can convey pretty much everything solely with his eyes like they were two infinitely deep wells of emotion. He tells without words or without doing anything what his character is thinking/going through inwardly, and you can practically hear the character’s thoughts as though they were spoken out loud. His expression of emotions is very authentic. Dylan loves people to an extreme extent, he’s genuinely kind and humble, doesn’t think high of himself at all, and his friends and family mean the world to him. He’s highly empathetic, can’t fake emotions and truly loves/adores his fans. Once at night he even drove over to a girl’s just to offer her support, because he knew she was going to have a tough night.
Te: Dylan is determined when he’s working on something, and devotes his time/energy to his project. He has a tendency for multitasking and won’t reject a job when it means something to him personally. He once said, “I just want to work with good filmmakers and do good projects that mean something to me and play interesting characters. That’s really it.” Once he’s decided on something, he will work hard to achieve that goal. He won’t let his free time activities ruin his job—he just makes time for each to satisfy both his workplace and himself.
Si: According to him, he didn’t plan on becoming an actor or even having a public role as part of his job. Dylan is very polite and can be a little conservative when it comes to impressing girls—he admitted to having stood in front of a girl’s house with a rose in between his teeth. He also said he’s naturally adept at making girls like him/connecting to them. He also adheres to his family and values everything that’s ever meant him something. He always watches the Mets play, thus he’s an expert in their scores, too.
Tyler Hoechlin [ESFP]
Se: The first thing you recognize about Hoechlin is how utterly physical he is—and by this, I’m not referring to how athletic he looks. I mean how conscious you are about all of his movements, even the small ones. While talking, he engages his whole body in the conversation or in what he’s saying, and there won’t be a moment where he’s just sitting/standing without doing much of anything else; he will either be stepping around, shifting his weight from one leg to another, move his head, smile, gesture with his arms, scratch, make wide movements, wiggle his eyebrows, etc all the time. His eyes are always wide and alert-looking, like he’s constantly scanning his environment for little clues, to suck up as many information as possible from there. He seems to be invested in his surroundings and aware of every small detail of it. He’s clearly an opportunist, willing to try out new things for the experience—according to him, at the age of 8-9, he was offered a role in a commercial and he thought, “why not, that would be fun”. His dominant Se plays a role in the way he acts/depicts characters; e.g. he unconsciously made Derek Hale’s character extremely physical, to the extent that it could be hard for typers who go for stereotypes/are inexperienced/beginners to tell apart Derek’s dom Te from his tert Se, because Hale’s character is also a very strong Se user. Hoechlin’s biggest passion has always been baseball.
Fi: Besides his physicality, his permanent full-teeth smile that could even put the Cheshire Cat to shame is what people recognize first on him. Tyler has a really nice and warm attitude to him that makes him lovable for other people. His kind nature compliments his attractive looks, which people seem to love a lot about him. He can’t hide/fake emotions—it’s really easy to spot in an interview when he would be anywhere but, or when his smile serves merely as a mask to preserve his outer image, because he knows that is what is expected of him. Hoechlin loves to get a good laugh out of his audience. He tends to have an humble attitude to him, but he’s also confident. Tyler used to have social anxiety as a child whenever he was separated from his mother. Apparently Hoechlin is adept at inspiring people with positive energy and mutual enjoyment, and he seems to have a need to share experiences with other people. Tyler is an empathetic, philanthropist individual with a tendency to put others before himself out of genuine generosity.
Te: Tyler is a very hard worker and will do anything to get things done. He realized he wanted to be an actor at the age of 13, hence during high school and the first year of college, he had a job as an actor. He has a preference for S over T, hence he’s a dominant Perceiver, but on occasion, he wants to get some kind of result out of what he’s doing/working on, however, he still prefers it when that certain activity is stimulating for his dominant Se and lives up to its expectations. Hoechlin will work on more than one project simultaneously when the situation calls for it (see: in the previously mentioned period of time he went to school, attended baseball practice, then went to work on the TV show). When he was asked to give advice to those wanting to start off their career as an actor, he went for listing practical advices instead of offering emotional support; he was also brutally honest about facts and didn’t try to sugarcoat anything.
Ni: Hoechlin is ambitious and works towards his goals with clear determination whenever needed. He had ambitions of having an acting career before the age of 13 as well, but that was the first time that his dream seemed to have actual potential, thus he started to deliberately work on it after then (this is his S-preference playing into his choice). When he’s invested in something, he sticks with it for long periods of time—this even meaning decades, or shaping his entire life in accordance to that one concept. He seems to settle for few ideas and then morph his time/life in advance to those; he has singular focus.
Notes: I don’t know him personally, so I might as well be wrong about him… but based on interviews and his habits/behaviours, this type seems to be the most plausible for Tyler.
Marilyn Manson [INTJ]
Ni: Manson obviously thinks in abstract images, and he’s fond of puns (“Why die when you can kill the father, Dad is missing an E.”) He never conveys his thoughts in concrete terms, but hints at it which later has to be analysed and then interpreted—this is why most people misunderstand him and his style. They give a whole new meaning to Manson’s entire character, which is why he’s widely known as the Satanist Antichrist, whereas according to his own words, he’s neither Satanist nor Christian. Manson is an infinitely intelligent individual, who has great knowledge, only he hides it under a mask made of a wide layer of makeup, hence most people fail to recognize the deepness he carries within. Since he is an Introverted Intuitive, the pictures made by him are much harder to interpret than if he were an Extraverted Intuitive. It is easiest for another Ni dom to get the hang of Manson’s style thanks to the NiSe frame which makes it easier for them to get what he wants to express. They can therefore analyse the apparently enigmatic pictures Manson offers in a meticulously-edited lyrics easier. He always conveys his thoughts in a literal way (“I’m a painting that’s still wet—if you touch me, I’ll be smeared you’ll be stained, stained for the rest of your life.”) One cannot interpret any of his lyrics individually, because it will make no sense—there are many and much more complexity to them, and just as many correlations with each other. The ‘grandiose picture’ in Manson’s case doesn’t mean one lyric of a song, but the whole album itself. If you treat his album as one complex symbol, you immediately have better chances of succeeding to interpret it than if you want to solve his puzzle by keeping an eye solely on its pieces alone.
Te: Manson is very logical and philosophic, even if this is unimaginable to others. He spends tremendous amounts of time just thinking, analysing things, and he isn’t afraid to share his conclusions with people. His opinions are all a result of his careful, practical thinking, observing every concept from different angles before arriving at a result, in which he will believe firmly. Manson has a matter-of-fact approach to things, even to emotions. When he questions something for having found a flaw in its logic, he gives voice to it: “When you’re taught to love everyone, to love your enemies, what value does that put on love?” (There is a reference for this in Coma Black: “I would have told her then/She was the only thing that/I could love in this dying world/But the simple word “love” itself/Already died and went away”) It isn’t uncommon for him to incorporate his philosophical threads into his lyrics either, just how I represented it in the previous sentence. Besides creating music, which he calls “the strongest form of magic”, his hobbies include painting—it allows him to sink into his thoughts and do nothing but just think, preferably in silence. He spends most of his time “alone at home”, according to his confession he has given in an interview. He also said, “It’s hard for me to make time to spend with other people.” He said, “Painting was something that if I got stuck or frustrated in creating something musically, or really just for fun if for nothing else.” Manson also likes setting up various scenarios where he can test out his theories—e.g. in his adolescence, he once hung a pinata filled with meat and said, “Don’t hit this, whatever you do”, then gave a bat to the person to see if they will be able to resist the urge. He called it “just a test in human psychology”.
Fi: Manson himself said that he has never thought of himself as a potential Antichrist, but since a lot of people have told him that he must be one, he has accepted the thought that maybe they are right about him. When he connects to people on an emotional level, he does so on a very strong one: he has also admitted to fearing getting close to someone because of being terrified that that person would leave him in some way. He has mentioned a paradox in connection with himself according to which, “I fall in love with everything, I also hate everything. It’s very hard to be a misanthrope and a romantic.” He himself said, “Hopefully, I’ll be remembered as the person who brought an end to Christianity”, because he believes that he would do good for humanity by that, because religion takes away the uniqueness of individuals. He wrote this into one of his textbooks during ethics class: “Fools aren’t born. They are watered and grown like weeds by institutions such as Christianity.” Manson is forever stressing the importance of being our own Gods in a world where restrained rules, dogmas and straining fears are trying to take away our individuality piece by piece—this life philosophy being presented by himself. “There’s nothing like the feeling of knowing that you’ve made a difference in someone’s life, even if that difference is a lifetime of nightmares and a fortune in therapy bills.” Manson has an humble attitude to him. Since his parents have retired, he’s been taking care of them. It makes him happiest to know that there are people around him who care about him.
Se: Manson takes serious care of his appearance. He picks out his clothes with meticulous detail, which is majorly to serve his dominant Ni’s fanatic symbolism—that is what determines his personality in the first place after all. His outfit is part of his personal symbolism, too. He’s encountered the so-called grip experience before—he was completely lost in the here-and-now and in the momentary pleasures. The lyrics he wrote during that period make little to no sense, because the inferior Se unhealthily overwrote the dominant Ni. (If you want an example for this, go ahead and check out the lyrics of This is the New Shit. At the same time, there are explicitly visual records of an INxJ being in the grip; for that, you may want to watch the video clip he made for sAINT. An INxJ in the grip reduces into someone who couldn’t even be the shadow of their real self.) Manson has become a symbol—and symbols never die.
Notes: I’m aware that the widely accepted type for Marilyn is INFJ, but I see TeFi dynamics in his case, not FeTi; he seems to feel responsible to take action (Te) to maintain/improve the well-being of others (TeFi), which he does through his music/lyrics. Also, I don’t see any sign of him being interested in social dynamics (Fe) at all, but more in individual characteristics (Fi) and in universal facts/truths (Te), for which he will do experiments, too. (A brief note for those who think Manson is INFP: he wrote a book full of complicated, personalized symbols, which is related to Ni, not Ne. More so, inf Se suits him, not inf Te.)
I could be pasting tons of quotes/lyrics from him to further prove my point, but I think I’ve already been clear enough. In the end, everyone will judge as they see fit, but I’m confident in my typing of him.
If you want a brief insight into the complexity of Manson’s lyrics I wrote about, go ahead and read the Notes section of this post.
Dr. Spencer Reid [INTP]
Ti: Reid has a seemingly neverending thirst for knowledge. He sucks up as many facts as he possibly can about anything he finds interesting. His intelligence cannot be questioned, and although he isn’t loud about his brains, he asserts his reputation as the smartest one in the room pretty quickly, even without intending to. Hotchner said about Reid, “Reid’s intellect is a shield, which protects him from his emotions”. Reid will find the irrationality in whatever he comes across—e.g. when Prentiss tells him the story of the star puzzle, Reid’s first reaction is, “That doesn’t make any sense”. When Prentiss angrily snaps, “What do you mean?” Reid sets off into an explanation how one cannot possibly catch a shooting star, because it burns up in the atmosphere. When Prentiss fights back with, “But it’s a fable”, Reid simply says, “But there’s no moral. Fables have morals”. He’s constantly stating facts, oblivious to other people’s possible discomfort with them. Reid always thinks fast and in silence, only sharing the result of his thought process instead of opting to engage himself in a brainstorming session.
Ne: Reid has become an expert in many things; one of them being the case of Jack the Ripper—his Si has matured to an extent that it urges him to ground himself in details, to be thorough, to dig deeply into a topic and not just scratch the surface of it like his Ne would do it if it would be getting its own way. While Derek is the one to imagine himself in the killer’s shoes, Reid’s resort is to connect all the individual (and seemingly unrelated) pieces together to find clues and draw conclusions (Ti) from what his Ne has noticed. He bonds with Garcia through their Extraverted Intuition, and with Derek (his shadow) through Intuition and Thinking. The two boys enjoy each other’s company so much because they are a constant intellectual stimulation for each other. However, Derek admits to being inferior to Reid when it comes to mental skills; once Gideon asked Derek if he’d ever experienced what it feels like to be reminded about his own incompetence, to which Derek’s response was a gesture towards the oblivious (silently thinking) Reid, saying, “Every single day.”
Si: No matter the topic, Reid will be able to come up with any kind of random fact that can be related in a way. He tends to be awkward and clumsy, and he will not reciprocate when someone extends his hand for a shake to him. Using his wide knowledge in various fields, he can be the substitute anthropologist/coroner/ballistic/etc. of the BAU when needed, in which case he will inspect the evidences with a hawk’s eye to catch on to anything odd. Reid sticks to traditions (especially the ones he set up for himself, e.g. visiting his mother in the asylum), and he enjoys engaging in national events, like Halloween (his Ne loves the creativity that lies within). Reid isn’t good with anything physical-related.
Fe: When he was stressed out after having been kidnapped by the man with Dissociative Personality Disorder, he temporarily fell into the grip of his inferior function—he was prone to randomly snapping at people, even when they didn’t deserve it; it was just Reid feeling alienated and irritable, while at the same time not being able to figure out his own emotions, or what he was going through internally, which caused an even bigger frustration building up in him. He got a grasp of his higher functions again when he said, “I will not miss another plain” to Gideon. Under healthy functioning, Reid’s Fe cares deeply for other people’s well being.
Notes: Please take notice that I didn’t mention his IQ of 187, his ability to read 20,000 words/minute, his photographic memory nor that he has three PhDs and three BAs, deliberately, because they have nothing to do with his thought process.
Derek Morgan [ENTJ]
Te: Derek has a rational approach to the world, preferring logic to feelings whenever he has to make a choice. When they get a call or they are provided new information about the case, he’s among the first ones to react, wanting to take decisive action to find a solution, not out of mere impulsiveness. He wants to cut to the core of things and solve things as fast as possible, no matter the cost. He gets impatient when they were mislead or when the investigation is stuck, because it makes him feel ineffective, and there are not many things that could frustrate strong Te users more than inefficiency. Derek wants to find the quickest solution to get rid of the problem as soon as possible. He can be blunt when it comes to stating facts, but since his Fi has developed over the years, Derek knows when to shut up and keep his inspections to himself.
Ni: On a crime scene, Derek is the one to start saying, “I am the killer. I want _____, and in order to do that, I have to ______”. This is the same what Will Graham does, but not to that insane extent, hence Derek won’t be driven crazy by this skill. He reanimates the scenario, walking around, feeling his way through it (Se) to get a holistic comprehension of what must have happened, all the while also seeing what he’s talking about in front of his mind’s eyes. He doesn’t care about exploring possibilities, rather his priority is shutting out every unlikely theory to reach the one ultimate truth. He never fails to catch on to Garcia’s jokes and come up with a witty response on his own. Derek always has a plan, but him acting on them is viewed as impulsiveness by his teammates at times.
Se: Derek is a very strong Se user—he will notice every detail that doesn’t fit, anything that’s odd and is a potential evidence to catch the murderer. He can handle weaponry very well, and has an eye to tell what bullet caused the wound. Derek loves sports—he was a star player back at high school, and he got admitted to tertiary education with a football scholarship. (He had to quit when his knee got injured.) He has great spatial vision, making it child’s play for him to find his way even in unknown areas, such as a forest. His primary focus (stemming from Te) can make him impulsive at times and thus, foil his Ni. After losing his father, Derek started exhibiting behavioral problems, earning himself a juvenile record—he fell into a loop.
Fi: His career choice may have been based on his unconsciously operating inferior function, which makes him eager to help people. Derek hates to cry in front of his friends (even before those to whom he’s close), and he shows discomfort when the others dig into his past, ignoring Derek’s protests to leave his private life alone. He can always sympathize with the victims’ alive relatives/friends—Derek will do anything to comfort them in a way, e.g. staying for the funeral of a father. In this case, he had direct personal experience; he lost his father in early childhood, too (witnessing as he was shot to death), just like the little kid shown at the end of the episode.
Dr. Lisa Cuddy [ENTJ]
Te: Cuddy herself said she was successful when it came to career and school, but failed when it came to living her life. She’s a pro in organizing everything, be it her own life, her hospital, or House. Cuddy is logical and a great leader, which is evidenced by the way she’s managing the life of Princeton Plainsboro. When we got a glimpse into a day in her life, she was shown as an organized woman with habits which will make her efficient in her everyday life—she does yoga in the morning, takes a shower, puts her clothes on which she had already decided on wearing the night prior, then waits for the babysitter to arrive, etc. Whenever she gets an idea, her second thought is how to implement it in practice—it is the cooperation of Te and Ni (which is why this isn’t only true for ENTJs, but INTJs as well). Superior Te-users (especially xNTJs) commonly have a hardship letting go of their duties and enjoy life as it is, without any bounds, because they constantly focus on what they will have to do next, and can’t help but constantly plan ahead.
Ni: Cuddy figured out early on what she wants to become when she grows up. She knew she wanted to attend a medical university, hence she shaped her life to fit into that one future goal, which is also the reason why she curbed the time she could have spent painting the town red with her peers. She’s also blessed with a quick quirk, so she can throw a comeback at House whenever needed, and is able to keep up with House’s wacky speaking habits easily.
Se: Due to her TeSe, Cuddy is all about doing things. Whenever a problem emerges on the horizon, she’s immediately trying to find a solution, which will hopefully eliminate the problem once and for all. She also has a great taste in picking out outfits for herself.
Fi: Cuddy is always logical, except for when she’s emotionally involved. In 5×11, she loses all sense, because she knows exactly what House’s new patient goes through emotionally. At first, she doesn’t realize the whys of this connection she immediately develops toward the girl, for what it is, but it can be etched to her aux Ni, which was already aware of the whole picture by the little signs which the Team and she were permanently supplied with—which was the fact that the girl had been pregnant just a while ago, and it had also been just a few weeks since Cuddy’s failed attempt at adoption. She also admitted she was late to realize the urge in herself for nurturing a child.
Dr. Robert Chase [ESTP]
Se: Chase is attracted to the present and wants to live life to its fullest. He craves to enjoy every moment of life, which is also partly the reason why he loves sex so much. Chase is confident and cares about his looks, he is vain when it comes to his appearance, but to a healthy extent only. Chase also likes working with House because of the thrill of each case. He is the best surgeon in Princeton-Plainsboro, thanks to his excellent motor skills. He is fast to react to any occurrence without giving much thought to it. For instance, he once killed a politician. And the future? Damn the consequences, Cameron thought he would be better off dead, and I agree, then why should I not do it when I have the guts?
Ti: Chase is extremely logical, and his auxiliary function bounds his bubbly, out-of-control dominant Se. His Ti also allows him to analyse House’s vague hints and puns, and he wants to know the reason behind everything instead of having the drive to control his environment.
Fe: His tertiary function gives him the ability to connect to people on an emotional level, which is probably the easiest way to most people’s heart. Chase is an exceptionally charming individual, who can be sympathetic with anyone. He is considerate when it comes to other people’s emotions, but since this is an inferior function and thus, is quite weak, he can’t always do it. Also, House’s Fi has an influence on him, too. At his worst, he isn’t afraid to use this ability of his to manipulate people emotionally when he needs something, either.
Ni: Chase seldom gets good ideas out of the blue, which can be etched to his gut instincts. He focuses on one case at a time, and is pretty ambitious. When he has an aim, he knows how to accomplish it due to his inferior Ni, although he has struggles figuring out these inevitable steps, since this function is the weakest in him.
Dr. Gregory House [INTJ]
Ni: House is the best known doctor for his ability to solve anything he comes across. At the end of the episodes, his Ni does the so-called ‘thinking without thinking’ to get to the solution, which later his Te rationalizes and logically organizes the thought process of which his Ni is already aware. He has extensive knowledge of pretty much anything, and reads up on other philosophers’ works. He clearly thinks in abstract images, not actual words, and he seeks closure—he can’t afford not being able to get the one and true answer to his cases, which is another Ni trait, because it wants to see the whole picture. House also uses the whiteboard for the sake of his Ni (just how Stiles uses his own colour system). House also values quality, which is why he was so careful to choose who will be granted membership in his Team.
Te: House clearly needs the brainstorming part. Even in 4×1, Cuddy tells him so. House was left without his team, and he used a janitor at first to have a conversation with. House set up a rhetorical situation for him, and he translated the janitor’s ideas into ones he could use for his case. He is very outspoken, and wants others to acknowledge the facts, even if it means shattering their beliefs (especially religious ones), or hurting their feelings. He wants everyone to accept the truth as it is, even if it’s sour.
Fi: House has a very underdeveloped Fi, which makes him an immature (and thus, a stereotypical) INTJ. He lives according to his own principles, doesn’t wear the trademark white gown, doesn’t give a crap about the hospital’s rules, and has strong beliefs—”Everybody lies” is probably the first sentence that pops up in everyone’s mind. He always hurts other people, because his Fi hasn’t realized it should partially filter the bluntness of his Te. House was also in love with Cuddy, but he acted as though he was afraid of his own emotions, because he didn’t want to acknowledge them for what they were; he appeared to be afraid of them. Also, in 3×24, he says “I think I’m fine”, which suggests a poor connection to his feelings.
Se: House is a great inspector—he misses no detail and whatever his Se picks up feeds his Ni to come to the right conclusion (so much how Sherlock works). He isn’t unfamiliar to loosing himself in physical pleasures, be it by Vicodine or sex. He can play several instruments exquisitely. He has a tendency to act recklessly, and wants to enjoy life. He also knows how to paint the town red (he organized Chase’s stag party), and he has been in a grip. His insane idea to set up his own death just so he can escape being dragged back to prison and spend the little time he had left with Wilson can also be etched to his NiSe. He wanted to keep his promise he made for Wilson, who has been his one and only true friend in his entire life.
Dean Winchester [ESTJ]
Te: Dean’s most obvious function. He always wants to follow a well-known pattern, as though he was solving all cases ‘by the book’. Dean always makes a detailed plan, which he uses later to catch the thing he and his brother are chasing. He rationally structures the world around him, all the while concentrating on efficiency. He also likes to control his environment, which he also did even back when he was a little child—he would always tell Sam what to do, how to behave, what to believe, etc. Dean is also popular for his sarcastic nature.
Si: His auxiliary function urges him to stick to his own traditions, memories, and well-known methods. The reason he is so absorbed with continuing where John left off is also etched to his aux Si. He doesn’t want to leave the ‘family business’, and this is also the reason why he and Sam would argue so much. Dean would always come up with their dad’s point of views, while Sam would always debate with things like following his own dreams. The stark difference between their Ni and Si is the root of the majority of their fights.
Ne: Dean is always the one to look for a new job. He sees the potential in all of the possibilities, and he always seeks excitement when he’s searching. The rarer the case, the better, because it brings him brand new things to deal with. He wants to try out new things, but since his Si is superior, he does so within an already well-known area—which is his job. This may appear as Se to most people, but in reality, this is SiNe: Ne accumulates the new experiences so that Si will have more and more things to compare to.
Fi: Probably his inferior Fi is the other function of his which is ridiculously obvious. Dean fiercely protects his feelings, and never talks about them, he instead just says “nah, I’m fine”. Since Sam reeks of Fe, he always easily annoys his bother when trying to get him to have a pep-talk with him. For instance, remember when John died and they talked about dealing with the loss? Sam suggested they talked about it openly, but instead of doing so, Dean opted to destroy a car with a metal stick. It shows that he has very intense emotions, but he has a hardship dealing with them.
Sam Winchester [INFJ]
Ni: Sam is the one to do all the researches, and it’s partially because his Ni makes him patient enough to dig deeply enough to get the desired amount of information and to also distinguish the needed details. He has premonitions/impressions which help him foresee the future. For instance, he sensed something was off in Home, when he insisted they stayed there in front of their childhood house to see if something would happen even after purging (and he was right about the premonition). Sam also struggled throughout his childhood, especially when he hit his teens, due to his strong aim to which he stuck strictly. It was also the reason why he didn’t get on well with the rest of his family.
Fe: I honestly don’t think it needs much explanation. Sam always considers what the others are feeling (except for when he was lacking his soul—at that time, he was a sociopath), and he always craves harmony in his environment. Sam is always the one to take care of the victims, to calm them down and assure them everything will be fine. He tends to give up arguments against Dean, just so it will end, and he always makes an attempt to urge Dean to have pep-talks with him. He firmly believes they need to talk about their feelings to each other, but his brother refuses, non-negotiable.
Ti: Sam trusts his inner logic no matter what. He doesn’t make structures nor plans, he just analyses everything and, with his Ni, searches for the interconnections and correlations between things. He gets into the depths of something, and whatever he’s come across during research, doesn’t fail to look at it from various angles. He lacks the drive to control his surroundings, too. Just like Bobby, he always comes up with the end result, not the thought process.
Se: Sometimes Sam becomes overwhelmed by his environment, hence he gets overstimulated and needs a little solitude. He is extremely insightful, and inspects the place they arrived at for any evidence. He tends to notice more details than Dean does, which is because Sam is more aware of his environment.
Lydia Martin [ENTJ]
Te: Lydia is the doer type of person. She’s in full charge of her environment, she’s able to organize people, to make them do whatever she needs, and she also has great leadership abilities, which the creators of the show didn’t take advantage of. She has a logical approach to the world surrounding her, and loathes it when someone is idle. Lydia always aims for results, which is why she got annoyed with Scott when he was reluctant to be a substitution for Jackson, because she knew the team had no chance to win without either of them. People could say it is etched to her supposed Si, because she cares for the reputation of the school, but she merely focused on herself all the while: she said she wasn’t intend to date a loser, and if the lacrosse team failed, the leader would have become a loser according to her standards. She couldn’t have allowed that, because she wants the best for herself.
Ni: Lydia is great at figuring other people out, hence she knew how to convince Scott to attend the match and be a replacement for Jackson, and she knew how much of her raging intellect can she allow to be shown to make sure Jackson won’t leave her due to differences between them in mental capacities. The fact that she reads up on a lot of things which interest her and dig deep into them is also a typical Ni trait. (Ne can do this, too, but it is by no way as obsessed with things as Ni is.) Lydia can work together with Stiles so efficiently and seamlessly, because both of them are superior Ni users—both are xNTJs in fact. They have a great understanding of each other, which Lydia figured out right after she opted to let Stiles closer to her after never talking to and ignoring the boy.
Se: Lydia chooses the details of her outfit meticulously, she wouldn’t let even a touch of dust to take her shine away. She cares about her appearance, and obviously takes joy in momentary physical pleasures. Also, with an Si, she would have had more hardship letting go of Jackson, but she got over him fairly easily. Lydia also took pride in her bruise after she was almost strangled, and chose not to hide it, because it was a sign of her being alive still. She said, “Why would I? I don’t need to hide that.”
Fi: Lydia shows her emotions once in a blue moon. She never opens up to anyone, and hates to be seen in her weak moments—remember when Stiles found her crying alone in her car? She tried to shoo him away, but when she realized Stiles was insistent and seriously wanted to offer help, she agreed to have a pep-talk (which had to be postponed in the end due to Stiles’ job which he promised to do). Even later, Stiles remained the only person with whom she shared her concerns, because she knew she could trust him and have faith in him.
Jackson Whittemore [ESTP]
Se: Jackson is extremely vain. He drives a Porsche, he’s captain of BHHS’s lacrosse team, he’s the boyfriend of the Lydia Martin, queen bee in charge, which makes them the dream couple of their high school, etc. He has standards when it comes to appearance, and if someone happens to fail them, and doesn’t reach up to them, Jackson will instantly think of them as unworthy beings, just how much he’s always bugging Stiles and Scott as the stereotypical jock he is. He needs the constant physical stimuli, which is also why he joined the lacrosse team of the school. Since he was active, and proved he was good enough, he was chosen to be the captain. Jackson is extremely aware of his environment, and misses no detail, of which he then makes conclusions.
Ti: Jackson promised to figure out Scott’s secret, which he managed to do with the generous aid of his SeTi stack—whatever detail his Se spotted his Ti used to logically fit them into the mental puzzle he was slowly building up piece by piece. It didn’t matter that he had no empirical evidence; since everything made sense if he merely accepted the seemingly impossible fact that werewolves exist, he could easily confide in his conclusion, which was that Scott was turned into a werewolf at some point in the near past.
Fe: All of Jackson’s feelings are written on his face (especially fear whenever he was confronted by werewolves), which helped Chris Argent, too, because it gave him a direct reason to interrogate Stiles and Jackson. The manifestation of Fe is negative in him, because it urges him to destroy everyone in order to be at the top of the social hierarchy alone (with Lydia, whenever he took her into account, too). No matter how hard he tries to deny and hide it, and appear to be independent, he does need the acceptance and acknowledgment of his environment. He uses logic rather than feelings, though, so his tertiary function was hardly-ever shown in the series.
Ni: Jackson is ambitious, and has his fair share of inner struggle, which is connected to the loss of his parents. He doesn’t fit the ESTP-stereotype with his good grades, but this is because one of his major goals is to do his best whatever comes in his way, be it his studies, lacrosse, cars, anything. He wants to prove his worth to everyone, especially to his in-law parents. When he was practicing lacrosse at night on his own, and was aiming at a spot he hung on a tree, he got frustrated when he constantly failed to hit it with the ball. He never missed the tree, but the spot, and that wasn’t good enough. Jackson was outrageous when Scott was chosen to be co-captain with him, because from his point of view, Scott did nothing, just got bitten, which was cheating compared to how hard he’s always been working in his life. He wanted to get the bite, too, because he wanted to be even better by gaining supernatural skills.
