Soooo…what’s the deal here?

We’re glad you asked! Podfic is the common term for an audio recording of fanfic. Our mission is simple: We want to spread the Swan Queen goodness far and wide! Podfic helps provide access to our friends who need or prefer audio rather than visual. Plus, it’s just awesome! Going on a long car trip? Looking for a way to improve your commute? Want to listen to a good story while you kick back with a glass of wine? Podfic is there for you! The SQP team is dedicated to putting out quality Swan Queen podfics that everyone can enjoy.

Currently, the goal is to put out a podfic on the first and fifteenth of every month. (This will hopefully increase in the future, but we thought it would be best to start small while we get everything figured out.)

Can I request that you record a certain fic?

Absolutely! You can request up to three fics at a time here.

Does requesting a fic guarantee that you will record it?

No, but we will take all requests into consideration.

Can I submit my own fic for consideration?

Please don’t. A better way to put yourself on our radar is to fill out our Author Questionnaire!

Will you ask before you record an author’s fic?

Yes! We take this very seriously! The SQP team will never record a fic without first obtaining explicit permission from the author.

I don’t want SQ Podfic to record any of my fics. How do I make this known?

So you’d like to be a part of the SQ Podfic team? Wonderful! Please read on and decide which role would suit you the best!

How It Works

SQ Podfic will put out two podfics per month - one at the beginning and one in the middle.

The mod will reach out on a monthly basis, first to narrators, establishing both a fic and a narrator for each date slot. Once those have been establised, artists will be contacted the following week, asking for a volunteer to do the art for each podfic. Narrators will have a 4-6 weeks to complete their project, depending on whether they signed up for the 1st or 15th date slot. Likewise, artists will have 3-5 weeks.

When signing up to be a narrator, you have the option to only participate once (if you have a specific fic you'd like to record) or to be added to our pool of volunteers that will be contacted each month.

Artist

Would you be interested in making cover art for the fics we record? You would be required to make one art that fits the theme of the fic and submit it in a predetermined size.

Narrator

Before you proceed, please take the following into account: It takes time and effort to make a good podfic! An average full-length podfic is at least 45 minutes long, which means 3+ hours of preparation, recording, and editing. Please take this into consideration before applying!

Requirements

• Ability to read English

• Ability to speak English intelligibly

• Adherence to deadlines

• Comfortable using (or learning to use!) basic audio editing software, such as Audacity. You will be expected to edit any imperfections out of your narration (coughs, dogs barking loudly, etc.), splice together multiple files if necessary, and upload the final product as one MP3 file. We will provide tutorials and answer questions, though!

Former experience with drama/theatre/narration is nice, but it's certainly not required! We will ask for an audio sample along with your application. We do not have specific requirements for sound equipment (a perfectly normal microphone should do the trick), but we want to produce good quality podfics that everyone can enjoy! No one wants to listen to 45 minutes of something that sounds like your mom driving down the highway on speakerphone.

Do I have to be able to do an American accent to narrate?

Nope! All accents welcome! All we ask is that you can speak English clearly and intelligibly, regardless of accent.
