... Family. That was a phrase that made Thera’s brain turn on end. She’d had family, two of them in fact, but they’d both been long, long ago. And then, in the ensuing years ... even among fellow immortals she felt ... different. Too ruthless, too driven, unwilling or unable to meet the unspoken terms of interaction that others seemed to find agreeable. Unwilling to allow anyone so close, unable to see why they’d value her if she did. Family was for others, and good luck; she just couldn’t understand anyone wanting her as part of theirs.

Which was why she arrived at on a doorstep in Greenwich mentally beating down the confusion and attempting to keep a neutral expression if she couldn’t manage a smile. It’ll be fine, she told herself firmly, shifting packages under one arm so she could ring the doorbell with the other, it’s Hector, for crying out loud! Hector, who she’d fought alongside for literal centuries, the wily old pirate turned hunter turned ... dad. Who somehow still wanted her around his daughter.

Thera took a breath, told herself not to be stupid, for goodness sake, and waited for one of them to answer the door.

Then he could deal with this and I’d be home sound asleep.” As if she’d actually leave him to do so instead of charging in at his side - which, despite the young woman’s steadfast faith, was almost certainly what her father would have come up with. Forthright, at the very least.

Thera took another look around the room, calculating how close she’d have to be to the men pointing the guns to reach one of them and get hold of his weapon before the others managed to shoot her. Answer … closer than she was. And preferably without Carina at her flank in the line of fire.
