Caterina is dangerous exactly because she's not only willing to gamble the lives of her family, she's willing to gamble herself with the assurance that she has groomed those boys into her most solid defense. I think when caterina finally dies that Illario and Lucanis are going to be wracked with so much grief but also relief and that will be tainted with a feeling of guilt so strong that it's going to leave them shells of themselves basically just running on autopilot for potentially weeks while they work out How to feel about that awful mix of positive and negative emotions.

No actually, I'm gonna talk about Caterina again because she literally comes out of VG in a better position than she went in and it's all due to plans on schemes on plots that she's been cooking for DECADES. Her favored heir not only returns to her but is ushered into power in such a way that completely eliminates his only rival for family power, Illario, while also discrediting Illario so badly that only fools would support any future bids for power. She solidifies her own retirement and comfort while still all but holding the reins through Lucanis, a younger man in his prime who can physically hold the chair with more stability. She simply wins, because she's such a magnificent bitch who weighted the dice so there was no way for her to lose.
