“You’re tryin’ to convince me of something, and I don’t like it.” Danny finally decided. He didn’t speak up much, but when it came to the people he cared about? He wouldn’t stand to hear a thing against them, even when it came to themselves. “All of these words just to try and convince me of the same thing. I might’ve believed you, once.”

Danny shook his head, and before he could have the chance to overthink his actions, his hands reached to cup Hosea’s face. “I know who you are, Hosea. I know what you’ve told me you’ve done, what you’ve told me you’ve seen--not one of it will convince me that you...you aren’t good.”

“I know you can’t stay. You don’t need to say it. Just...remember to come back, sometimes. You’re safe here. With me.”

"I'd like to state for the record that you're the one that called yourself old, not me." Molly reaches over, stealing his biscuit from his plate and scampering back before he can retrieve it. She takes an unrepentant bite from it, tempted to shove the entirety of it into her mouth before it can be salvaged. Childish? Naturally. He started it. "Besides," She manages around the bite, but she at least has the decency to bring a hand up to cover her mouth as she speaks, "What else am I supposed to do for fun around here if I can't contradict and disrespect old men? That's the real tragedy."

“I can’t help but notice that none of y’all have even so much as taken a knee to start.” Molly was breathless, but still sauntered back to the little group with an insufferable swagger. She was smirking--more than smirking, she was all but glowing.

With their target’s horses running free (and the target off and shouting after them), it seemed they would have just about all the time they liked. Flopping down onto the front steps, Molly crossed her legs at the ankles. “There we are, boys--don’t worry, just kiss the boots.”

“Stop shouting at me--let go!” Danny wrenched himself away from Hosea, his heart racing in his throat. “I’m trying to keep anybody from getting killed! These guns and this violence ain’t done any man any good, Hosea.”

Then, in final desperation, Danny’s tone turned pleading. “He’s my brother, Hosea. He’s my brother, I can’t...I can’t let this happen. Not without trying. Please...please, just let me talk to him.”

Honestly, if you asked Danny at the beginning of their interaction what he found attractive, i don’t think he’d have an answer. That’s not to say that he doesn’t find anything attractive, it’s just...fuck, he doesn’t know. Maybe it’s the way Hosea drawls when he’s being snarky. Maybe it’s the way he puts his hands behind his head and stretches out into infinity with those long legs.

Nope, nevermind. I could tell you for hours about how much he loves the way Hosea speaks, his eyes--but honestly, it’s the hands. The HANDS, y’all. They can do so much or so little and Danny tells you that first hand.

“Yeah, but it sounds better comin’ from me.” Molly replied, and clapped the older man on the back as she wandered around him toward her horse. Friday, basically a dog with hooves, nickered and snorted and shifted in eagerness to get going.

“Don’t be so sour, Hosea! You get the pleasure of escorting yours truly to, ah...” She paused in her preparation, “Where the hell are we headin’ again?”

Unwilling to lift his head just yet, Danny merely mumbled against Hosea’s chest. He had so little time with him, there didn’t seem a point wasting it talking about himself. Eventually, however, Danny did lift his head--just enough to look where Hosea’s hand wandered.

“...ain’t nothing.” He finally replied, and immediately resumed his earlier position, all but wrapped around Hosea. There was no point in dwelling on the unpleasant things that happened when he wasn’t around. Hosea couldn’t be everywhere at once...and Danny was determined to prove he was just as tough. Just as deserving of him.

It wasn't the first time he'd shown up there these past couple weeks, drunk as all hell. The first couple times, he'd pickpocketed the patrons: gone back to taking anything he could get off them, whether it had value or not. Now, though--now he just stood slumped in the doorway, waiting for Danny to come and--and fix him, maybe. Do /something/. "McKie," he called, half-drawling. "Would you do me the kindness of givin' me a drink? Somethin' strong."

In the beginning, Danny might have been happy to see him. In a way, Danny still was, but whatever happiness he felt at Hosea’s visits was quickly dashed the moment he realized the fair-haired bandit had all but drowned himself in booze. It wasn’t a visit for him; it was a means to an end. Danny did his best to keep from taking it personally--after all, to lose one’s wife was likely to be a terrible thing to bear. He could only imagine how it hurt. Perhaps what was worse than Hosea coming for comfort was not knowing how to fix it.

Hearing Hosea’s voice in the entryway drew a small sigh from the innkeeper, and for a moment, Danny merely braced his hands on the counter, and equally braced himself for what he was about to face.

“The only strong drink you’re gettin’ here, Matthews, is bitter coffee, and plenty of it.” Danny finally replied as he rounded the corner, and folded his arms. Jerking his head, he motioned for Hosea to follow him. “I don’t need my guests hearin’ you caterwaul to the heavens--you’ll get your coffee in the kitchen where I can keep an eye on you.”
