i mean... spn ending in a big sitcom-esque wedding episode as its finale would be the exact kind of shit-stirring, meta, painted-over insidious horror that its later seasons became known for
but when taken at face value... i can’t for a minute square the sam that walked out of the bunker one last time in 15.20 with one cheerfully entering into a hunter wedding and raising a hunter family. hell, i can’t square any version of sam post-s6 doing this. he’s existed in a limnal space for a long time now, lurching from tragedy to apocalypse to funeral to resurrection, utterly hollowed out from the life, from the demands of a relationship that first asked for then demanded penance and devotion. that he was able to leave it behind while still treasuring the memory of his brother (for however short a time before he got stuck in a heavenly time capsule for all of eternity) is still so powerful to me. the blurry!wife was never the point, and to think it is still tells me how much fandom’s view of sam is shaped by what dean thinks and approves of and honestly, kind of neatly slotting sam into some cookie-cutter future while refusing to acknowledge his history, his complexity as an individual, or his expressed desires.
