2. What movie have you watched most recently? What did you think of it?

I rewatched Blazing Saddles today. Fuckin love that movie. Absolutely would not get made today - I would bet $20,000 that Mel Brooks, Gene Wilder, and the entire cast would have been canceled for the movie if it had been - but I think that's a travesty, considering it's message (which does exist, of standing up against racists, bullies, and corrupt authorities is so applicable today.

As for movies I hadn't watched before...the last new one I remember watching is Dodgeball. I'm not normally a fan of modern day comedies - TV shows or movies; a lot of them just have really cringey humor and try too hard to be funny instead of being organically or situationally funny - but I really enjoyed it. Definitely would recommend it.

And then...not exactly new and I've watched it once before, Titan A.E. It has the same animation style as Treasure Planet, and a very similar vibe. And the story is really well written. Very fun, very good movie.

How about 003 for the ask thing? - Valjean, Fantine, Marius, Cosette, Eponine

Aw, this is gonna be kind of hard…. Really, it depends on the adaptation as the characters can be vastly different in the way they’re written, but I’ll try to keep this short.Valjean: I mean, who doesn’t love this guy? He’s such a sweetheart in every adaptation… except maybe the BBC version….

Fantine: Also one that’s almost always a favorite of mine.

Cosette: I haven’t finished the book yet, so I can’t judge her very much from that, but I love Young Cosette. I’m not much of a fan of her when she’s older in the musical, but I really like her in the anime.

Eponine: I have pretty much opposite feelings towards Eponine than I have towards Cosette. I really don’t like her as a child (I mean, I know she was just following her parents’ leads, but geez), but I do have some pity for her when she’s an adult.

Marius: I find him extremely annoying, but he’s not at least as bad in the anime (most of the time), and I absolutely love Michael Ball’s Marius (his is the only one I actually look forward to seeing and listening to), and I actually find him quite adorable (I mean, duh. It’s Michael Ball. Of course he’s adorable.)

Character ask: Yue?

I'll be honest, really wasn't expecting to get an ask about Yue any time soon. Admittedly I don't think about Yue much (usually I'm thinking about Sokka or one of the Fire Nation kids), but I really like Yue; she's pretty cool. So I'm definitely happy about it.

character: hate them | don’t really care | like them | LOVE them | THEY ARE MY PRECIOUS (I really like Yue, but she's kind of a flat character, realistically? She's really cool, she's just not one of my favorites.)

ship with: Sokka is pretty much it. She's cute with Katara, too (I've read one or two Yuetara fics and really enjoyed them; if anyone has any fic recs I’d definitely be interested). I don't read many fics where Yue gets featured because so many of them are just...heartbreaking (I say this having written one of said fics😅)

general opinions: Yue was brave, very brave, and she should never have been asked to give her life (none of the kids in ATLA should have been put in that situation, though). Sometimes, I wish she would have survived, if only because she died far, far too young. And I really wish we'd gotten to see more of her - whether because her story started earlier or ended later, I just wish we'd gotten to learn more about her. She's kind of a flat character (she only appeared in 3 episodes which didn't help), but out of flat characters, her story is intriguing and heartbreaking.

Film/series ask 39?

39. Favorite scene

Oh, boy, favorite scene? There are...so many contenders.

I always have, and always will, love the Charge of the Rohirrim from Return of the King because that scene is just epic (and seriously, if you tell me that scene doesn't make you want to hop on a horse and go run over an Orcish face, I won't believe you). Another of my favorite scenes is Boromir's stand from Fellowship of the Ring, because that's also an incredibly well done, and very, very sad scene.

#8 and 23?

8. What’s a new piece of media that you found and loved this year?

Trailer Park Boys. Yeah, it's not actually a new piece of media, but it was new to me; my friends and I watched it during breaks and meals at work, and we spent so much time laughing at it. It's such a stupid show, but it's hilarious, too.

23. What’s the best advice you received this year?

If you have to tell someone bad news or something upsetting or about a problem, don't try and sugarcoat. Don't try and tell a story. Don't try and make excuses.

Just say what happened in the plainest, most honest way you possibly can, and what you're doing about it (if there is something you can do about it). Will it make the fact that something bad happened any better? No, not really. But the person you're telling will appreciate the fact that you told them about it, and that you're at least trying to fix it, or figure out why it happened. It's not going to feel good, but you'll live through it - and the day after, you'll have another chance to learn, and to try again. And again. And again, until you get it right.

Fic bingo: but one cup of sake?

I really enjoyed writing this one. It was a fun one, and it gave me an opportunity to use one of my favorite quotes (Uesegi Kenshin's death poem). But, at the same time, looking back, I can see the flaws and the places where I left ideas hanging. I suppose that's the norm for most fics, but I can really see it for this one. I still like this one, though.

Summer asks: Alcove and Jam?

Alcove: do you like going to the beach or do you prefer the pool?

Beach. Every time. I love the waves and the surf. (My family has a pool but I really don't use it? Not sure why.)

Jam: what’s your favorite type of ice cream or sweet treat?

I really like coffee or cheesecake flavored ice cream. Those are my go-to ice cream flavors.
