have lunch with me on your break. you wouldn't leave a girl to eat by herself, right?
you're kind of notorious for not wanting company on your break, so he considers himself set up on a technicality. but he also considers himself a gentleman of sorts, and he really isn't supposed leave you alone—something something work something—so he complies. if only to watch your eyes light up kindly when he agrees. he tells himself it's because you like his company sometimes, your words, not his, and he wants to talk more about the essence of the shoot.
not that he gets to. any and all ideas promptly leave him when you flounce out of the changing room and link arms with him bundled in the ugliest knitted sweater he's ever seen. a baseball cap and a pair of jeans and shoes and whatever else, but the sweater is loud and words escape him. your grin is horribly pleased.
gift from a cousin. isn't it cute? she made it herself. bewildered isn't even close to whatever is brewing in his chest when you briefly let go to twirl and show off. and it's not until you stop in front of a door settled in the corner of the street does he realize not a single person cared.
greatest city in the world for a reason, he supposed. the ability to just exist here is still fresh to him even after all these years. the deli is only a few minutes of a walk away from the studio anyway. squeezing his arm gently, you push the door open with familiarity woven deep into your movements. a head pops up from behind a display of assorted meats and packaged cheeses to holler a string of words that make you laugh.
"now that's a face i haven't seen in so long." an older woman smiles when you reach the front of the store, leaning over a clear shelf full with an assortment of candies and gum. "you forget about us down here?"
he glances at you when you snort another laugh. "yeah, i only came down here to see precious."
precious turns out to be the fattest cat he's ever seen in his life. he blinks. precious throws him the nastiest mug he's ever received in his life only to purr contently when you reach over to scratch under her chin.
you nurse a medium sized iced coffee loaded on enough addons to make his head spin with the same conviction as a beer. your shoulders drop, posture loosened by a fraction, as if relief serves itself freely in caffeine and syrups. he tells you such and watches mirth spread across your face like sunlight spilling in streams across the street. you ask him how he knows with a pointed glance. he doesn't answer.
not a drinker, you offer in stead of his silence. the ice swirls around with the movements of your straw. around and around and around. so this is next best thing. isn't it hypocritical that caffeine is an acceptable addiction to have?
the sidewalk bustles with the mixed traffic of summer. children, their parents, and young adults on bikes weaving between cars. outside seating gives you reprieve from the sunlight but it warms his skin nonetheless. oil sizzles from the kitchen over muted conversation and the wind rustles through tree branches to flirt with the curls peeking underneath your hat.
silence lingers for long pauses between your conversation. not uncomfortable, but felt nonetheless. your gaze flits from passing face to passing face with an elbow propped up against the table. his lighter grows heavier next to the creased pack of smokes in his pocket.
he knows you don't mind it when he smokes. the industry is full of them, you'd once remarked with sigh and shrug one shoulder after denying his offer. you get used to it after all these years. im not that kind of purist.
the secondhand smoke? wisps of grey had curled around his mouth when he asked. hidden by the swirl, he'd watched you watch it dissipate with muted fascination. you asthmatic or somethin'?
had it terribly when i was little. it's mostly tempered now, though. your smile is fond when you utter your next words. new york isn't a city that slows down for anyone. it'll crush you if you linger for a second longer than you have to.
he'd stubbed the cigarette after long beat. then promptly flushed when you'd started to laugh. sweet, you'd called him.
he's not. really. but he sits with your conversation and coffee like a vice of his own now, wordlessly agreeing with a bite to his sandwich. new york was as unforgivingly cutthroat as it was a beacon of hope for those who needed it. in a way, you reflect both sides just as equally.
he pushes the other half of his sandwich across the table. your answering smile is confused, brows once smoothed now slightly drawn together.
tomatoes make my stomach hurt. he's unflinching when your gaze narrows at him accusingly. what? i'm serious. scout's honor.
never mind that the only connection to those troopers is buying those cookies when they're on sale by the cartload. but you didn't need to know that. you looked like you didn't even believe him, but an incredulous smile twitches at the corner of your lips so he considers it a win.
buying food knowing you won't finish it is wasteful. your fingers peel open the wrapping with a tenderness reserved only for the finest bacon-lettuce-and-tomato-with-mayo-black-pepper-and-avocado the city has to offer. just because ricky's old doesn't mean he won't hand your ass to you.
mimicking your shrug from earlier, he hides a smile into his next bite when your resounding hum is full of delight. i'll take the beating fair and square.
his fingers itch for his camera. there's mayo smudged across your nose and lettuce hanging from your lips. you're the most beautiful he's ever seen you.
