He probably spent more time than was necessary sleeping at Kara’s apartment. It was cozy and warm and he didn’t feel nearly as lonely curled up on the floor next to her bed as he did at his own apartment, plus he liked Donna a lot and as an added bonus their upstairs neighbors didn’t constantly stomp around at three in the morning so all in all it was just better than sleeping alone. They said a prayer together before she turned out the light and Lar felt more at peace than he had in a very, very long time.
Still, his eyes fluttered open when he heard a soft whimpering and he flew to his feet when he heard the tell-tale sounds of someone thrashing around in bed. His first thought was that there was an intruder, though he had to admit he felt bad for whoever decided this particular apartment was the right one to try and break into, but as he glanced toward Kara’s bed he realized that it was just her having what he assumed to be a nightmare.
And a particularly violent one at that.
He bit his lip, unsure if he should go get Donna but looking closer he could see tears streaming from her closed eyes and it broke his heart. He moved to sit on her bed as gently as he could as he gently shook her shoulder, his voice soft as he spoke. “Kara, Kara, hey. It’s just a dream. You’re alright.”
That seemed to do it, and she blinked up blearily at him as he wiped his thumb over her cheek softly. He shuffled closer, adjusting himself until she was tucked under his chin and he was staring at the ceiling. With a final glance down at her he pressed his lips to her hairline before resting his cheek there, remembering all of the times his mother had done the same to him when he couldn’t sleep.
“I’m right here.” He said, and then, much to his own surprise, an old lullaby from his childhood began to play in his head. One he hadn’t thought of in years.
