Dashboard Stuff: Trim Reblogs

Desktop only. Trim reblogs is the one and essential tool if you want to try threads, the usual form of interacting in the rpc and recently popping up in FakeVz, too!

XKit-Rewritten is required. Scroll down to Installation to download. To access the settings visit the Extension Manager Menu of your browser. Toggle on "Trim Reblogs".

The reason why you want to use this is because reblog chains are endless by default and as soon as there are three or more posts in a thread things get messy. The goal is to always have two posts per interaction, your partner's last post and your latest reply. You don't want to trim away your partner's last post. It's considered a bit rude and also if you leave it there you can later read the whole novel on your own blog instead of having to browse your partner's blog for their replies. Sounds confusing at first? It will make perfect sense as soon as you get used to this style of formatting and have some writing going on.

Click on Reblog under the post you want to reply to. If it's a first original post it requires no trimming, you type your reply and are good to go. Let's get right to the trimming part. Again, click on reblog under the post you want to reply to. Save as draft. This is important! This step will look something like this:

Go to your drafts and click on the pencil symbol to edit the post. Type your reply and save as draft again. Your finished draft contains three posts now and looks like this.

Now click on the scissors symbol next to the pencil to open a context menu. Usually it's set to trim away the oldest item in the trail but double check if unsure. It should look like this.

Remember: You don't want to trim your partner's posts away. And that's basically it. Have fun and happy writing!

Some dashboard stuff

So, I'm a bit bored and still find myself in a massive creative slump at the moment. Anyways, I wanted to make something. Since Tumblr fucked up its layout a while ago here's how I fixed my dashboard to make it still enjoyable. If you're a veteran you can skip this I guess but if you're newer you might wanna have a look at this (long post under the cut).

The dashboard unfucker is outdated and not working anymore!

Basic settings Access tumblr settings from the account manager drop down menu.

Account tab enable show on all community labels if you wish to see all content. disable Hide additional potentially mature content.

Dashboard tab disable Best Stuff First to make the timeline chronological.

Extensions I'm using Firefox (for one particular plug-in, but the rest should work in any browser).

Dashboard Unfucker This little tool saved my life. You'll need a userscript manager like Tampermonkey. Install it to your browser. Then get the Dashboard Unfucker made by this goated person. Reload the dashboard to make the settings appear at the top right (above recommended blogs). Set it up to personal preference.

XKit-Rewritten This is a super useful extension for tweaking the dashboard. Visit this site and scroll down to Installation. After installing the settings can be managed from the extension menu of the browser. Set it up to personal preference.

Firefox Multi-Account Containers Firefox only. Install this extension from here. If you have more than one main blog this tool allows to open multiple accounts in the same browser. Whenever opening a new tab it lets you choose a container for the tab. Set it up to personal preference under Manage Containers. Tick the box Select a container for each new tab.

Palettes for Tumblr Make the dashboard appear in custom colors. Visit this site and scroll down to Installation. After installing the settings can be managed from the extension menu of the browser. Set it up to personal preference.

Dashboard Stuff: Palettes for Tumblr

Download and install from this page (scroll down to Installation). This small plugin got a brief mention here but I think it's so good that it deserves its own post. It's from the same creator who made the XKit-Rewritten plugin which is widely popular within the Tumblr rpc.

As you might know by now, I'm a total customization freak and always looking for ways to improve my dashboard experience here and there. Those modifications are rather small but can have a huge impact in terms of usability and overall enjoyment of being here. The usual disclaimer: I'm on desktop 90% of the time. My Screen is 1920x1080p ; 17,3" standard notebook. The results may differ depending on your setup. Make tweaks to your own preference.

Access the settings from the Extension Manager Menu of your browser. Create your own dashboard colors by clicking on Manage… and starting from a default palette.

Click on New.. and start from True Blue for a light palette and from Dark Mode for a dark palette. If you are using Firefox, having a Hex to RGB converter on hand is recommended. In Chrome you can type in a Hex Code directly. Name your palette and save it when you're done. You can also import/export palettes to have a backup at hand anytime and switch palettes easily. Return to the dashboard and apply the palette from the drop down menu. It should appear at the very bottom of the list.

Making custom colors is great enough but you can also change the font-family and font-size. This is what makes this plugin really worth using. Do you hate Tumblr's default font which looks like ass as much as I do? I would recommend Helvetica Neue for best readability. It also fixes a lot of unicode, making most tags using symbols look better. But there's a few options for serif fonts, too, if you are going with this certain type of aesthetic. The default font size is 16, I like to use 15 for a more compact look and use a 110% zoom setting for my browser to go along with it. (CTRL+/- to change the zoom level and CTRL0 for 100%) Both small font and normal font look really good with this setting, in my opinion.

More Dashboard Stuff

Here are two little tricks which 1. help with not missing out on posts from your favorite blogs and 2. hide reblogs temporarily to catch up on original posts after being away for a while (e.g. muse games, important psa's etc). As always my stuff applies to desktop only, I don't use the app.

BLOG SUBS

(Go to Settings > Labs > Enable Tumblr Labs + Blog Subscriptions tab.)

Click on Configure Dashboard Tabs and activate Blog Subs. It shows up as a tab now.

Visit a blog of interest and click the meatball menu. Select Get Notifications. The Blog Subs Tab creates a second feed basically, showing only posts from blogs you get notifs from.

2. HIDE REBLOGS

This one requires XKit-Rewritten. Scroll down to Installation to download. To access the settings visit the Extension Manager Menu of your browser. Toggle on Show Originals. There's also some extra options.

Two new tabs are created by this, where you can temporarily hide reblogs by clicking Original Posts. Don't forget to switch back to All Posts after you're done catching up.

Note: This works best with Endless Scrolling enabled and the following Settings disabled.
